.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Josnrrr .l'nnnnorc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willarch in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life boats.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for boats adapted for maintaining the same atloat even if hit by a torpedo or other projectile, adjusting means being arranged for the device it further object of the invention is the provision of a floating device for life boats arranged in a plurality of compartments whereby the floating properties of the device will not be destroyed when hit by a projectile, a regulating means being carried by the boat for arranging the device at a point adjacent the water line.
lWith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, an ordinary form of life boat is illustrated having a tubular Heat 11 aranged surrounding the boat and adjustable in height.
The float 11 is formed of a plurality of barrel shaped air containers 12 positioned in end to end arrangement upon a mounting strip 13 slidably arranged against the outer bpecificaticn of Letters 1Fatent, Watcnted Dec. 11., 1917.

Annular straps 1a which are channeled in cross section overlie the engaging end flanges 15 of the pneumatic member 152, the straps being secured to the strip 13 by hold-fast devices 16. Each compartment 12 is arranged with a filling valve or nipple 17 and it will be apparent that with all of the compartments 12 filled with air the boat 10 will be assisted in floating in a suitable condition.
A suitable number of upright threaded bars 18 are carried by the straps 14E extending through brackets 19 adjacent the deck 20 of the boat 10. Pinions 21 are armiged within the brackets 19 threaded upon the rods 18 while a power shaft 22 is journaled in brackets 23 upon the deck 20 having end pinions 21 in mesh with the rod pinions 21. Gears 25 may be provided upon the shafts 22 for turning the latter simultaneously and thereby uniformly elevating or lowering the strip 13 and the float 11. The float 11 may be adjusted to a position adjacent the water line of the boat 10' which position may be changed when desired incidental to the different weights of the boats cargo and it will be apparent that if one of the compartments 12 should be destroyed the remaining compartments would be uninjured and would serve to maintain the boat floating upon the waterz. The straps 1% may be removed when it is desired to change the compartments 12 and it will be seen that a serviceable floating device is arranged which may also act as a butter for the boat during the operation thereof. The compartments 12 may be formed of any suitable light material, capable of inflation such as rubber or thin metal hat 1 claim as new is 1. in combination with a boat, a strip surrounding the same and vertically adj usttable adjacent the hull, a plurality of pneumatic compartments arranged end to end upon the said strip, interengaging mounting straps carried by said strip overlying the adjacent ends of the compartments, elevating rods carried by said straps and on crating means for the said elevating rods.
