SETY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l Application tiled December e, 11.916. Serial Ito. 135,879.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern." o
Be it known that ll, RALPH R. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at @akland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful.
With this and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain new and novel features of arrangements and combination of parts, such as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
lin the accompanying drawings Figure l is a diagram showing the intersection of a rail* road E with a road for wheeledvehicles, the latter being bounded at the sides by the fences A;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of a peculiarly constructed panel of which six may be seen in plan, disposed in baffle formation, (three on each side of the railroad track), Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and 1F Fig. a is a transverse section on line t-t Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Arranged in groups of three on each side of the railroad track, as above noted, Fig. l, are shown peculiarly constructed panels, so located as to give to the occupants of approaching vehicles the impression of a line offencing across the road. rllhe location, relatively, of the members of each group, in bae formation, necessitates slow speed `on the part of vehicles being driven through.
The construction of these panels is such as to present a yielding surface to the impact of a swiftly moving vehicle, and one which l will su'er the minimum amount of damage therefrom; but which will in turn, indict dit dama e to tires of carelessly driven vehicles,-
if ma e of rubber. At Gr, Figs. 2 and 3, is shown a heavy sill, preferably of wood, havinga channel H formed into its top, and all corners and surfaces at the :gw formed into curves. rlFhe flexible pickets t? preferably of spring steel, are shown fastened to the sill by means of lag screws, such fastening (at thelr bases) allowing them to yield as already described, when struck, or run over by passing vehicles. f rlFhe cutting edges d' are des1gned to gash the tires of carelessly driven vehicles.
1. The combination with a railway and a highway crossing the same, of means at staggered points in said highway for forcing vehicles traveling thereon to take a tortuous course before crossing said railway, whereby their speed must necessarily be slackened.
2. The combination with a railway and a highway crossing the same; of a plurality of short fences extending transversely of said highway and arranged in staggered relation, whereby slackened speed of vehicles on said highway is caused, said fences being spaced sufciently to permit the vehicle to take a tortuous course therebetween.
3. rfhe combination with a railway and' a highway crossin the same; of means in Said highway for in orcing slackened speed of vehicles before reaching the crossing or for puncturing the vehicle tires if ignored.
1l. rlhe combination with a railway and a highway crossing the same; of a plurality of short fences extending transversely of said highway and arranged in staggered relation, whereby slackened speed of vehicles on said highway is caused, said fences being spaced suciently to permit the vehicles to take a tortuous course therebetween, and each fence bein formed of a plurality of downwardly yie dable self-righting-picket's, having means thereon for puncturing the tires of a vehicle if depressed by the latter.
5. 6. The combination with a railway and a highway crossing the same, of a downwardly Patented Dec. 4t., ildll't.

7 The combination with a railway and a highway crossing the same, of a transverse fence in said highway around which vehicles thereon must drive, whereby slackened speed is inforced, said fence consisting of a plurality of downwardly yieldable self- 10 righting pickets.
