ELECTRIC LOG.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known illiltI, LIDYD G. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Logs, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates to electrically operated heating logs, which, during operation, resemble glowing or burning wood logs, in a highly realistic and attractive manner.
An important object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensiye to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course i the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the body portion of the a paratus is re resented by the numeral 5, an is formed of insulatin material such as porcelain, lass or the li e. This body portion is in t e form of three tubular logs 6, stacked as shown. The logs are provided upon their exterior with depressions 7 and are further provided with apertures 8. Particular attention is called to the fact that the depress ons 7 are disposed in or upon the exterior surface of the wall of the support or log, and these depressions do not pass or cut through said wall to lead into the interior of the hollow support or log, whereby the appearance of the log is not impaired.
Arranged within the depressions 7 at suitabl spaced intervals are heating coils 9 of high resistance, which are adapted to glow or be luminescent. arranged upon the exterior of one of the lower logs, and secured thereto by any suitable means, asshown. Arranged within the interior of the logs is an electric bulb 13, which is connected in series with the wire 11, as shown. The wires 10 and 11 are adapted for connection with the opposite poles of a source of current.
When the switch 12 is closed it is obvious that current will flow through the wire 10 and the h'eatin coils 9 connected in series therewith and t rough a portion of the wire 11 back to the opposlte pole of the source of current. A portion of the current will also flow through a portion of the wire 10, electric bulb 13, and throu h the wire 11 back to the opposite pole of t e source of current. The bulb 13 may thus be made to glow while the heating coils glow, to illuminate the logs, while it is to be understood that satisfactory results may be obtained by omitting the electric bulb. I have found that the glowing coils, arranged at spaced intervals, preferably in the depressions in the logs, produce an exceedingly realistic eifect, it appearing as if the logs were ignited at intervals.
The logs may be made sufliciently lar e for use in a fireplace, or the may be ma e smaller and used upon a ta 1e for heating plates or the like. The invention is not restricted to any particular use of the construction.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
size, and arrangement of parts ma be resorted to without departing from t e spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a support formed of insulating material and simulating a lo of a plurality of spaced heating coils of hi resistance arranged upon the exterior of t e outer surface of the Wall of said support of the log and secured thereto and adapted to glow upon the passage of current therethrough, and means for supplying current to the coils.
2. The combination with a sup ort formed of insulating material and simu ating a log and having depressions formed upon the exterior surface of the wall ,of said support and.- which depressions do not cut through said wall and lead to the interior of the support, bf a plurality of spaced heating coils of high resistance secured within the depressions and adapted to glow u on the passage of current therethrough, an means for supplyin current to the coils.
3. The com )inaluionwith a sup ort formed of insulatin material and simu ating a log and provide with exterior depressions upon the exterior surface of the wall of said support and which depressions do not cu' through said wall and lead to the interior of the support and apertures, a plurality of spaced heating coils of high resistance arranged within the depressions and adapted to glow upon the passage of current'therethrough, circuits connected with the coils and passing through the apertures and arof the support and apertures, of a plurality of spaced heating coils of high resistance arranged within the depressions and adapted to glow upon the passage of current therethrough, circuits connected with the coils and passing through the a ertures and arranged within the log, an e ectric bulb con- .ected in one circuit, and a switch to open and close the circuit.
