To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MALCOLM D. MAL- coMsoN and CHRISTOPHER A. Knrorrnn, J12, both citizens of the United States, Msnoomr lD. MALooMsoN residing at West Orange, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, and CHRISTOPHER A. KnroHEN, Jr., residing at Waterbury, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers or Wall-Hooks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to that class of clevices which are attached to a side wall to provide a means of hanging various articles thereon.
It comprises an article made from one length of material formed up so as to provide a member to serve as a fastening pin which is adapted to be driven into the wall, and a hook portion terminating below the fastening pin but not resting directly on 1t.
The particular construction by which this result is accomplished will be more fully set forth in the following description and shown in the. drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank for a hanger made from fiat material.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of hanger bent up from Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view of the hanger made from round metal and Fig. 5 is a modification.
As will be seen by the drawings our device is formed up from one piece of metal, including the pin which is to enter the wall. This is so even when the hanger is made of fiat metal, as is shown by the blank in Fig. 1. In this figure A represents the body of the device and B the securing pin. When made of fiat metal a longitudinal central slot G is formed in the body, through which the pin B will project when the hanger is formed up for use.
In case the device is made from round steel or wire, provision is made for the central slot C by looping the wire at this point,
care being taken that the loop G, through whlch the pin B passes is longitudinally oblong in shape so its vertical dimension w1ll extend above the pin B. The loop however does not interfere with the body of the hanger being substantially straight and lying flat against the wall.
In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the upper terminal end of the slot C is some distance above the pin B. By this construction the pin does not come in contact with the metal at the upper end of the slot B, or bear the direct weight of the hanger at this point. The body A is formed straight between the top at a and the point Z) at the bottom where it bends to form the hook D. This provides for the back of the hanger lying against the wall for its entire length.
From the turning point a the metal eX- tends a distance downward and is again bent at 0, so the remaining part, which forms the pin B will pass the straight body portion A at an angle.
At (Z, we preferably make a second bend providing double thickness of metal in order to form a head 0 and strengthen the pin at this point where it receives the stroke of a hammer when being driven into the wall WV. When the body is composed of flat metal, with a narrow central slot, and the pin end portion B is reduced in size to allow it to pass through the slot, the wider part of the material should be bent over as shown in Fig. 2. This construction avoids danger of weakness which might arise from bending the reduced metal where it joins the wider part.
It will be understood that the weight sustained by the hook D is transmitted to a pull on the straight body A and distributed from the point a, hence a downward pressure on the hook tends to wedge or jam the upper end of the body A against the wall.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent N 0. 1,248,363, granted November 27, 1917, upon the application of Malcolin D. Malcomson, of West Orange, New Jersey, and Christopher A. Ketchen, Jr, of Waterbury, Connecticut, for an improvement in Hangers or Wall-Hooks, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Page 2, 'line 4, strike out the yvord central and that may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
