CORNER IRON.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.l0,1914.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2'7, 191%..
Application filed January 10, 1914. Serial No. 811,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT F. KRANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner- Irons, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to improved corner irons for panel boards and the like.
The object of the invention is to simplify, cheapen and make a sightly corner iron connection for the device above referred to.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the upper part of a panel board provided with my improved corner iron, one corner being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the corner bracket,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view-of the securing member. I
Fig}! is a perspective view of the slidable web or securing member.
As shown in the drawing: 1 is the ordinary back plate for slate or other matezial, and 2, 3, and 4 are the side barriers of the same material.
Each corner carries the corner bracket 5, which consists of a flat plate 6 with holes 7 through which it is secured to the base 1, and upstanding right angle leaf 8 projecting from the part 6, and a second leaf 9 turned at right angles to the first leaf 8. A hole 10 is provided for a screw 11. The clampmg member 12 is provided with two inturned edges 1314, and with an overturned finishing top part 15. In the recesses formed by the over-turned edges 13 and 14, there is mounted, so as to slide, the wedge member 16, which is provided with two reversed metal plates 17 and 18, secured together by rivets 19, and provided with a threaded center hole 20.
In assembling a panel board after securing the side plate- 5, the clamping member 12 is placed in position, screw 11 pro ected through the hole 10, and engag ng the threaded hole 20, the slate side barriers 2, 3 and 4 inserted in place, so that upon a tightening of the screw 11, the slate barriers will be held up against the leaves 9 and 8 of the t6 corner bracket. The inner plate 17 of thewedge member will act as a butt against which the ends of the sides rest.
In'carrying out this invention, details of construction may be varied from those shown, and yet the essence of the invention be retained; some parts might be employed w thout others, and new features thereof might be combined with elements old in the artln diverse ways, although the herein described type is regarded as embodying substantial improvements over such modifications.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, 'and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention:
1. A corner iron for connecting the base board and side walls of a panel box or the like, said corner iron comprising a main part and an auxiliary part, the main part being formed with a base portion which is adapted tolie flat upon and be secured to the base board of the panel box, and comprisingfalso an upstanding portion providing two walls arranged. at an angle with respect to each other said two walls forming a recess between them adapted to receive the end portions of the side walls of the panel box, the auxiliary part comprising a clamping element adapted to be received between the upstanding walls of the main part and to exert pressure for holding the end portions of the mentioned side walls of the box pressed against the upstanding walls of the main part, means engaging between the main part and said clamping element to adjust the pressure of the clamping element, the auxiliary part also comprising a finishing plate having a portion disposed to be squeezed 'by the clamping element against the surface of the side walls of the box when said clampin element is tightened, thereby to frictiOnalIy retain the finishing plate against. longitudinal movement outwardly away from the base board, and said finishing plate having a cover plate held in position thereby for covering the outer end of the joint made by said parts and for overlapping the outer edge surfaces of the end portions of the side walls of the box to prevent outward edge-wise movement of said end Walls.
2. A corner iron for connecting together the base board and the side walls of a panel box or the like, said corner iron comprising a two part clamp with connecting means between them for drawing said two parts together to grip the adjacent ends of the side walls of the box to hold said ends assembled, one part of the clamp' having a bottom piece made therewith disposed to engage and be connected with the base board to hold the two parts of the clamp against movement with respect to the base board, and the second part of the clamp having a portion made herewith disposed to overlie the outer end edges of the side walls of the box to prevent edgewise movement of said side walls outwardly away from the base board.
3. A corner iron for connecting together the base board and the side walls of a panel box or the like, said corner iron comprising a main part and an auxiliary part. the main part being formed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal slit intermediate its ends for approximately half its width, the portion of said sheet metal at one side of said slit being bent at right angles to the portion at the other side of the slit whereby to provide a base portion adapted to be connected to the base board of the box and to provide an upstanding portion at the other side of the slit for connection with the side walls of the box, said upstanding portion being bent by means of said slit longitudinally to provide two walls at an angle with respect of each other against which the adjacent ends of the side walls of the box may be engaged, and the auxiliary part constituting a clamping element, adjustable means to clamp the clamping element toward the upstanding walls of the main part and to thereby grip the interposed end portionof the side walls of the box, and means held by the clamping element having a part to overlie the outer end edges of the side walls of the'box' to prevent edgewise displacement of the sidewalls of the box outwardly away from tlie'base board of the box.
Signed at New York city, New York,"this 9th day of January, one thousand nine hundred and thirteen.
