Be it known that I, LOUIS subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Wolverhampton, in Staffordshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in" V-Type InternalCombustion Engines, of which the fol- Coa'rannn, a
Th1s invention relates to internal combustion engines having cam shafts driven by a train of gears from the crank shaft, particularly such as are used on aeroplanes, and its object is to provide improved grouping and operation of the auxiliaries and ignition devices. Among the former may be mentioned the water and oil pumps, the oil filter and the dynamo These auxiliaries do not require tobe accurately timed in relation to the crank shaft, but the ignition devices must be accurately timed. Thereforeno in removing and rep acing the auxiliaries, but the fitting of an ignition device is an great careto in sure that it is correctly timed, as will be readily understood. The auxiliaries and ignition devices ought also to-be placed where they are easily accessible, and m some cases have to be fairly frequently removed, so that ease of removal is important. The axis of the intermediate gear Which drives the water pump is at B The water pump, oil pumps, and dynano-drive do not require to be accurately timed relative to the crank shaft, but as the magnetos or other ignition devices must be accurately replaced after removal it is therefore desirable that these should not be carried by the lower cover plate A. Consequently they are carried by the upper timing gear covcr'plates P which inclose the greater part of the train of gearing between the cam shafts and the crank shaft. The
I magnetos are therefore arranged at the accessiblc end of the engine as shown and can conveniently be controlled by a single rod .which may be interconnected with the throttle valves of the carbureter. Thus there may be a single shaft R coupled by ,inantle each of these separately. Further,
the external connections, such as the waterand oil ,pipes are arranged at the accessible end of the engine, and close together, and they can all be within easy view of the aviator when the engine is fitted to an aeroplane; In addition, all the auxiliaries, ignition devices, and the spindle for the oil pump are driven. directly by shafts or gears which are essential to the engine and are not specially provided for the driving of the auxiliaries. This results in simplicity and reduction of weight, as will be readily understood.
Obviously each timing gear cover P may carry two or more magnetos instead of one a lower cover plate over part of said gear train, removable without disturbing said train, auxiliaries carried by and removable with said cover plate, an upper cover plate over the upper part of said train, an ignition device upon said second cover plate, easily disengageable driving connections be tween said auxiliaries and said gear train, and driving connections between said ignition device and said gear train, substantially as set forth.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a crank chamber, two rows of cylinders thereon, a crank shaft, cam shafts supported above said cylinders, trains of gearing between said crank shaft and said cam shafts, a lower cover late attached to said crank chamber and in, osing part of said trains of gearing which is removable without disturbing said trains, auxiliaries carried by and removable with said cover plate, an upper cover plate toeach of said trains, an ignition device carried by each of said upper cover lates and driven by said trains, and easily disengageable conneetions between said auxiliaries and part of said train of gearing, substantially as set forth.
