ADJUSTABLE BED-TABLE.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be itknown that I, CLARENCE N. NELSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Canby, in the county of Yellow. Medicine, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Bed-Table; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable othersskilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
The present invention relates to an adjustable bed table, and has for its object to provide a device of ,thischaracter which embodies novel features of constructionwhere by it caneither be swungoverthe bed and used as a table, or swung to one side of the bed andused forthe support of medicine.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable bed table. which is comparatively simple-and inexpensive in its construction, which can, be readilyapplied to a bed and adjusted to the correct position thereon, and which can be GttSllYfldjllStGCllliO position the table over the bed or at one side thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a collapsible hospital bed provided with a swinging table constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, the table being shown in one position by full lines, and in a number of adjusted positions by dotted lines and dot and dash lines, the head section and its connection being omitted for convenience in illustrating.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the table and supporting bracket, portions being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. i is an enlarged detail View of the latch means for holding the table in an adjusted position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1'2, 1916.
Patented Nov. 27,1917. Serial No. 108,903.
For the purpose of illustration the adjustable bed table is shown in the drawings as applied to a collapsible bed, of which the numerals 1 and 2 designate the head audfoot pieces, respectively, and 3 and 3? complemental sections of the main frame, said sec tions being hingedly connected to each other at 4, and to the respective head and foot pieces, at 5. Diagonal brace members (3 con nectthe sections 3. and 3 of the. main frame to the respective headandfootpieces, said brace members being pivotally connected .to the sections of the main frame at 7, and slidably engaging slots 8 in the-head and foot pieces. The lower ends of the said slots 8 provide stops forcooperation with the endsof the brace members to limit the downward swinging movementofthe main frame sections 3 and 3 andhold them in a horizontal position when the bedis extended. Iii-order to collapsethe. bed the main frame isbroken at the hingedjoint land the sections 3 and 8 thereof swung upwardly, the head and foot pieces maintaining a verticalwposition and being simultaneously drawn toward each other. The outer ends of the braces 6 then slide in the slots 8 so that the braces have a substantially vertical position when the bed is folded.
A swinging head rest 9 is illustrated as hingedly connected at 10 to the section 3 of the main frame. The swinging end of the head rest 9 is connected by a spring 11 to the upper end of an adjusting lever 12 which is pivotally connected at an intermediate point in its length, as indicated at 13, to the main frame. The lower end of the lever extends below the main frame where it terminates in a handle 12 and is provided with a latch 14 for engagement with a segmental rack 15, to lock the lever and head rest in an adjusted position. Both the head rest 9 and adjusting lever 12 can be swung into the plane of the section 3* of the main frame when it is desired to collapse the bed. No claim is made either to the bed or to the head rest.
The table 16 is mounted upon an ex tensible bracket arm 17 and arranged so that it can either be swung over the bed and used as a table for eating purposes, or swung to one side of the bed and used for the support of medicine. The bracket 17 is formed in telescoping sections 17 and 17 the section l7 fitting slidably within the section l7 so that it can be moved in and out to the effective ofthe V.
bracket. A set screwlS may be provided for locking the partsin an adjusted Josition. The outer end of the section 1 X offset laterally at 17 and arranged to be secured to the head piece 1 by a suitable fastening member 19. The Outer end of the section 17 b is also offset laterally atl? and provided with a segmental arm 20, said arm being normally horizontally disposed" at a suitable elevationabove the bed frame. One corner of the table 16 is provided at the i bottom thereof with a segmental guide 22 which slidably receives the segmental arm 20 of the bracket, both the arm and guide casing being polygonal in cross section so that the table top is held rigidly in a horizontal position. The sliding engagement be tween thesegmental arm 20 and theguide 22 admits "of the table top 16' being either swung intoposition oVer the bed so that it can be used by'the patient when eating, or swung into a position at one side of the bed where it can be very conveniently used for the support of medicine. "A handlever 23 is V pivotally mounted at 2& upon a bracket 25 projecting from the top of the table l6,-said lever being provided with a nose 26 which passes'through an opening in the table top and is adapted to engage any selected one of a series of openings 27 in the c'urvedor Copies of this patent: may be obtained for segmental arm 20 to hold the table top in an adjusted position. .Aspring 28 may be provided for normally holding the hand lever 23 inoperative position.
Having thus described the invention, What qr l claim as new and desire tosecure by :Let
ters Patent, is
A device'of the character described, including a bracket arm which is provided at one end thereof with a' h'orizontally disposed curved arm having a series of openings therein, meansat the oppositeen dof the bracket arm "for supporting it rigidly in position, aswingingtable, a segmental guide of two subscribing witnesses;
