Patented Nov. 2?, that Application filed May 17, 1917. Serial No. 169,358.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it -known that 1, WILLIAM Rnorono MULooK, of the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Shells, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to improvements in? v toy shells and the object of the invention i to providev an amusement appliance in the nature of a shell formed from sections which can be put together and interiorly locked so that it cannot be opened by exterior hand manipulation and which when dropped will be set off, so to speak, to fly apart, producing at the sametime a sharp report thereby giving the effect of a shell bursting .under an interior explosion.
With the above object in view the invention consists essentially in a shell formed from a plurality of assembled sections, means for interiorly locking the shell sections in place, said means being adapted to be released by impact of the shell with an object and means for efiecting an explosion simultaneously with the shell striking the object, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the complete shell and as it appears in what might be termed the closed position.

In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
l d 2 represent the nose and butt ends make the nose end of of the shell which are spaced a determined distance apart and are securely fastened to the opposite ends of a central guide shaft 3.
The nose end of the shell is bored to re ceive a weight 4, the object of which is to the shell heavy so that when the said shell is dropped from a height it will naturally turn nose down.
lVhile the weight has been shown embedded in the nose it will be readily understood that the nose itself could be made of material heavier than the butt to effect the same purpose, or tnc end made heavier in any other way.
On the shaft I mount slidably a shifting member 6 which presents a disk like head 7 carrying an extending cylindrical skirt or flange 8 which is of the same external diamcter as the head.
Toward. the nose end of the shell the shaft is slotted as indicated at 9 and the slot receives a retarding spring 10 secured to the shaft and engage-able with the shifting member and adapted to retard the sliding movement of the shifting member in a more or less central position on the shaft.
Around the shaft and bearing on the butt and nose and on the shifting member I build up the wall of the shell which is formed from sets of, What might be termed, head and butt sections 11 and 12 which are approximately equal in length and span be tween the head and butt ends of the shell. The sections 11, of which in the present instance there are six in number, (this number can be increased or decreased as desired) are all identical in form and \each has the ends thereof oppositely tapered as indicated at 11 and 11 the tapering ends 11 being designed when the said sections are assent bled to enter a more or less ll-shaped groove 13 provided in the rear of the nose 1. This groove is a continuous one having the inner side thereof contained in a circle of the same diameter as the diameter of the disk 7 so that when the said sections are placed in position they entirely close around the front endof the shell with their edges meeting and their outer faces flush with the nose.
The sections 12am the same in number as the sections 11 and they are adapted to inclose the rear end ofthe shell and-they have their ends beveled in the same direction as indicated at 12' and 12 so that when assembled their forward ends overlie the ends 11 of the front sections.
Therear ends 12 of the sections 12 are adapted to enter a substantially V-shaped continuous groove 14 formed in the butt 2 of the shell and the inner side of this groove is contained in a circle having a diameter equal to the diameter of the disk.
From the above disclosure it will be apparent that when all the sections are assembled with the ends 11 in the grooves 13, the ends 12 in the grooves 14 and the ends 12' overlapping the ends 11 and bearing on the shifting member the whole appliance presents a shell like shape.
In carrying out my invention it is necessary that the sections be locked interiorly so that they cannot be opened from the outside by hand manipulation and to this end I have provided the parts now described which cooperate with the shifting member to lock the sections.
Each of the butt sections 12 is provided with a spring 15 which is permanently secured in any suitable way such as by riveting as shown at 16 to the section, which spring passes lengthwise of the section and has the rear end inturned and riding on the shaft and the forward end deflected slightly inwardly and provided with a rounded tip 17. .The arrangement of the springs is such that when the rear sections are assembled there is a tension built up in the rear ends of the spring which is utilized to fling out the butt sections when the appliance is unlocked as later described.
The nose end of the shell is fitted with a striking plate 18 which carries a spring catch 19 underneath which I place a percussion cap 20. The above completes the description of the parts.
The applianceis used in the following Way considering the sections have been removed.-
One first slides the shifting member to the position shown approximately in dotted outline in Fig. 2, in which position it will be seen it is retarded against sliding by the spring 10, and then inserts the percussion cap under the catch 19. He then assembles the sections 11 and afterward the sections 12. Then, holding these all closed, he turns the shell nose up and strikes the butt end,
nose end will turn down and will strike the object. In striking the object the'yimpactcausesthe shifting member to move toward the nose end of the shell with the result that the forward ends of the springs are released from the skirt and free the sections 12 which are flung out by the action of the springs 15. Immediately the sections 12 are released the sections 11 are free and they scatter as affected by the jar. Simultaneously with the shell strikin the object the cap explodes for the reason t at it is struck by the then falling sliding member.
Obviously from the above disc osure the complete effect of the shellwhen dropped is one which is very realistic owing to thefact that the dropped shell not only scatters but also produces an explosion. 7
While I have described the invention in detail it will be readily understood that various changes could be readily made in the construction without in the least departing from the spirit of the invention'fand as covered by the appended claims.
WVhat I claim as my invention is z 1. A locked sectional toy shell adapted to be unlocked upon impact with an ob ect,

3. A sectional toy shell and means for in teriorly locking the assembled sections, said means being constructed to unlock upon impact of the shell with an object.
4. A toy shell formed from assembled sections, means for interiorly locking the, assembled sections, said locking means being 1 adapted to unlock upon the impact of the shell with an object and means for efiecting an audible explosion coincident with the striking of the shell with the object.
5. A toy shell formed from assembled I looked sections and adapted, when dropped to strike an object, to unlock and scatter the sections and simultaneously effect an audible explosion.
6. A toy shell having a nose and a butt end and formed from assembled sections and means for interiorly locking the sections closed, said locking means being constructed to effect the locking of the sections by the striking of thetshell butt against an object near/nee and to efi'ect the unlocking of the shell sections by the striking of the shell nose against an object.
7. A toy shell having a nose and a butt end and formed from assembled sections and means for interiorly locking the sections closed, said locking means being constructed to effect the locking of the sections by the striking of the shell butt against an object and to. effect the unlocking of the shell sections by the striking of the shell nose against an object and means for effecting an audible explosion coincident with the unlocking of the sections.
8. A toy shell comprising, connected nose and butt ends, grouped body sections inclosing the sides of the shell between the nose and butt ends, means for interiorly locking the sections against displacement in the grouped position, said means being adapted to be released through impact of the nose of the shell with an object and means for scattering the released sections.
9. A toy shell comprising butt and nose ends, a guide shaft permanently connecting the ends, a gravity open-ted member slidably mounted on the shaft. shell sections grouped around the nose, and butt ends and the sliding member and inclosing the side of the shell and means cotiperating with the sliding member to interiorly lock the sections closed in the displacement of the sliding member in one direction and to release them in the displacement of'the sliding member in the other direction.
10. A toy shell comprising butt and nose ends, a guide shaft permanently connecting the ends, a gravity operated member slidably mounted on the shaft, shell sections grouped around the nose and butt ends and the sliding member and inclosing the side of the shell, means cooperating with the sliding member to interior-1y lock the sections closed in the displacement of the sliding member in one direction and to release them in the displacement of the sliding member in the other direction and means for scattering the sections upon the same becoming unlocked.
11. A. toy shell comprising nose and butt ends, a uide shaft permanently connecting the ends, a gravity operated member slidably mounted on the shaft, a plurality of head and butt sections grouped end to end and forming the body of the shell and having their inner ends normally bearing on the sliding member and overlapped and their outer ends releasably engaged with the nose and butt ends respectively and locking means secured to the butt sections and adapted to be engaged by the shifting member to lock the sections closed and upon the shifting member l1 shifted in a direction towa d the butt end 12. A toy shell comprising nose and butt ends, a guide shaft permanently connecting the ends, a gravity operated member slid ably mounted on the shaft, a plurality of head and butt sections grouped end to end and forming the body of the shell and l1aving their inner ends normally bearing on the sliding member and overlapped and their outer ends releasably engaged with the nose and butt ends respectively and springs permanently attached to the butt sections and adapted to be engaged by the shifting memher to lock all of the sections closed and upon the shifting member being shifted to the butt end, said springs being further designed to engage with the shaft and be brought into tension when the sections are locked.
13. A toy shell comprising nose and butt ends, a guide shaft permanently connecting the ends together, a sliding member mounted on the shaft and provided with an extending cylindrical skirt directed toward the butt end, setszof nose and butt sections assembled around the shaft but clear of the same and with their inner ends meeting on the sliding member and with the ends of the butt sections overlapping the ends of the nose sections and with their outer ends releasably mounted in the nose and butt sections and a lengthwise extending spring secured to each of the butt sections and having one end engaged with the guide shaft to effect a tension in the spring and the other end extending and inclining inwardly to allow the said end of the spring to pass in side the flange of the shifting member upon the shifting member being shifted toward the butt end of the shell.
14c. An assembled sectional toy shell having the assembled sections locked and the locking effected in a manner such that the sections cannot be unlocked by exterior manipulation.
15. An assembled sectional interiorly locked toy shell adapted to be unlocked by impact with an object and in no other way.
16. An assembled sectional toy shell presenting a nose and butt end and provided interiorly With'shifting means adapted to interiorly lock the sections against opening upon the striking-of the butt end of the shell against an object and to unlock and to release the sections upon striking of the nose end against an object.
17. In a toy shell the combination with a guiding shaft and a shifting member slidably mounted on the shaft of a retarding spring carried by the shaft and engageable with the shifting member.
