UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. EARNEST, C1 MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRODE GRIP-HANDLE.
Application filed April 18, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. EARNEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Electrode Grip-Handle, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to electric welding devices, and aims to provide a novel and improved electrode grip handle or implement, which is of such construction. as to permit the electrode to be held in various positions in an easy and efficient manner, as desired by the operator, which will permit the device to be handled during continuous welding without burning the hands of the operator, thereby rendering the device more economical, due to the fact that it is not necessary for the operator to stop welding at intervals in order to let the handle cool off, and which is of advantage for other reasons which will hereinafter appear.
It is also the object of the invention to provide an electrode grip handle wherein the component elements are assembled in a novel and eflicacious manner, to render the device thoroughly serviceable, practical and reliable in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panving drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 designates the handle proper, which is constructed of suitable in sulating material, and of such size and shape as to be conveniently grasped by the hand. Fitted upon the reduced ends are the ferrules or caps 2 and 3, the same being constructed of suitable metal or other material, and being securely held in place by a pair of longitudinal bolts 4 extending longitudinally through the handle and having countersunk heads seated within apertures in the Specification of Letters Patent.

The electrode grip or head or implementembodies a block or base '2' sea ted against the ferrule or cap 3 and havin reduced threaded shank 8 screwed into h central portion of the ferrule 3, the tl'ireade ends of the bolts f having reduced ext i sions S to seat within sockets with which the block 7 is provided, whereby to prevent the same from unscrewing, the block7 being applied before the bolts at are tightened.
The block 7 is provided at opposite sides with recesses or cavities 9 for receivng the looped terminals 10 of the conductors from which the insulation has been stripped or removed, and a bolt 11 extends transversely through the block 7 and has a nut 1?. ant. washer 13 for clamping the loops 1O t ghtly within the recesses 9 to electrically connect them with the block 7 with a broad bearing surface of minimum resistance to the flow of electrical energy.
The block or head 7 has an outstanding or longitudinally projecting jaw or tongue 11 and a stepped portion 15 at the basal end of the jaw to which a leaf spring or tongue 16 is riveted or otherwise secured to cooperate with the jaw 1 1, the base of the spring or jaw 16 is grooved or otherwise roughened in order to firmly hold the electrode 18 between the jaws in various positions, as most convenient or desirable. The spring or resilient jaw 16 will clamp the electrode against the rigid jaw 1 1 which is rigidly united with the outer end of the handle. The implement can be readily manipulated by grasping the handle 1, as will be apparent to those familiar with the art.
The advantages of the implement are as follows: The device will maintain more uniform current for the reason that where the conductor connections are made, there is no liability of the conductors twisting off, due to the fact that they are separatee at the point where they enter the handle and are insulated apart not only by their insulation but by the handle also where they extend through the handle, the conductors or cables turning or moving with the handle. Furthermore, the connection of the conductors or cables with the grip or head of the implement will remain fixed, so as not to impede the flow of current, which is essential to perfect welding. 5y thus uniting the conductors or cables with the handle and grip, this reduces or eliminates the breaking of the strands of the conductors, which if it occurs impairs the current conducting properties of the implement, resulting in loss of energy by heating. The conductors are well insulated to the point where they are attached to the electrode grip, thus avoiding short circuits or loss of energy. The jaws of the grip are wider and thicker than those now used, whereby to increase the carrying capacity of the device, there being a greater contact between the electrode and the grip and a firmer one. The handle is sui'liciently large in diameter to be conveniently grasped in the hand, thereby eliminating the cramping of the hand, but at the same time, the implement is light in weight to be easily manipulated. Due t the fact that the conductors are extended through the handle before being connected to the grip, and the handle being of nonconducting material, will avoid the heating of the handle, which can be held without interruption during continuous welding, providing for safety, in that the hands will not be burned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A welding implement embodying a handle, an electrode grip attached to one end thereof, and a conductor extending completely through the handle from the other end thereof and connected to said grip beyond the first mentioned end of the handle,

A welding implement embodying a handle, an electrode head attached to one end of said handle, a pair of conductors extending longitudinally through the handle from the other end thereof, and means for clamping the terminals of said conductors to opposite sides of said head beyond the first mentioned end of the handle.
A welding implement embodying a handle, a ferrule upon one end thereof, an electrode head attached to said ferrule, common means for attaching the ferrule to the handle and for holding said head assembled with the ferrule, and a conductor extending longitudinally through the handle from the other end thereof, extending through the ferrule and connected to said head beyond the ferrule.
&. A welding implement embodying a handle, a ferrule upon one end thereof, an electrode head threadedly connected to said ferrule, and a bolt securing the ferrule to the handle and engaging said head to pre vent the rotation thereof.
5. A welding implement embodying a handle of insulating material, ferrules fitted upon the ends thereof, bolts extending longitudinally through the handle and having heads engaging one ferrule and threaded ends threadedly engaging the other ferrule, an electrode head seated against the second mentioned ferrule and having a threaded shank threadedly engaging said ferrule, the threaded ends of the bolts having extensions engaging said head to prevent the turning thereof, said handle having longitudinal bores, conductors extending through said bores from the first mentioned through the second mentioned ferrule, and means engaging transversely through said head and clamping the terminals of said conductors to opposite sides thereof.
