Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,776, dated March 19, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

i To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. ALMY, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVood-Clamping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereuse the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referrin g to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my movable head-block.

Arepresents a portion of the bed upon which the timber to be bent is laid. To this bed, at each end of the timber, it is intended to have a head-block,'B, which rests upon the bed and has a shaft or roller, 0, passing through it at or near its inner end. Upon each end of this roller is an eccentric pin, a, which is provided with a pitman, D, pivoted to the bed, as shown, thus together forming an eccentric, by means of which the head-block may be moved back and forth. Motion is communicated to this eccentric by means of a cogged segment, E, placed upon one end of the roller.G, and gearing with a pinion, b, upon one end of a shaft, G, which is placed in suitable boxes across the rear end of the head-block and provided at its other end with a crank, H.

In bending wood it is necessary to have a very powerful pressure endwise on the timber, which is produced very satisfactorily with my improved head-blocks. It is also necessary as the machine for bending the timber is nearin g the top or end of the circle, to let the pressure oft gradually to prevent the timber from warping or buckling and, consequently, producing an imperfect pieceof work. This is very important, and can be done with perfect ease with my head-block. And it can also be held very easily at any point, the operator may desire. The eccentric, with a crank attached directly thereto, has been used on bendingmachines, but with them it is impossible to let ofl any of the pressure the operator may have had without losing it all. But by the use of the small cog-wheel or pinion with its crank and the cogged segment not only will a more powerful pressure be exerted, but this pressure may be let oft gradually.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a wood-clamping machine, the combination of eccentric rollers G, pivoted connectingbars D, cogged segment E, pinion b, and crank H, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
