Be it known that I, ALLEN M.- S'rnEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Alleghenyjand State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and'useful Improvements in Sanding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to a track-sanding device adapted to be used on cars, locomotives and the like, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide means whereby sand from a sand box or reservoir maybe directed upon the rail, irrespective of whether the vehicle is traveling on a straight track or on a curve.
Heretofore sanding devices have been used in which a discharge tube was rigidly fixed with relation to the vehicle, and the outlet end of the tube wasnear enough to therailtread to work more or less satisfactorily when the vehicle was traveling along a straight track. When however, (as in the case of locomotive sanding devices) the vehicle happened to be traveling around a curve, the outlet end of the sanding tube would in many instances be swung out of line with the rail-tread, and as a result the sand would not be directed upon the rail to prevent the wheels from slipping.
A device constructed in accordance with my invention will not only distribute the sand over the rail-tread in a most eflicient manner, but will also efiectively perform the desired function when the vehicle is rounding a curve.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference;

tance above the tread of the rail 11, and at ts lower extremity it is provided with a transverse pin 19. which extends entirely through the walls of the tube 10. The pin 11 is rovided with projecting ends 13 and let which engage elongated slots 15 and 16in he split collar 17 which serves as a bracket for the sand distributer 18. By reference to ig. 3 it will be observed that the distributer or shoe may consist of a hollow casting, having a discharge conduit of variable cross-sectional area the greatest area being at the upper end 19 of thecasting and sufficiently extensive to receive the depending end of the tube 10. The opposite or lower end of the conduit is restricted and merges into a transverse elongated discharge slot or nozzle 20, the length of which is preferably somewhat less than the width of the rail-tread so that the sand will be" distributed upon the tread of the rail in an eflicient manner.
The collar 17 is provided with two laterally projecting ears 21 and 22 between which is a hinge projection 23 integral with casting 18 and both ears 21 and 22 and the member 23 are provided with alining openings for the reception of the hinge bolt 24: whereby a hinge is provided which is offset with respect to the tube 10 and whereby the casting may have a vertically swinging movement so that the discharge end may be raised and lowered by a linkage system, for exanr ple, a link 25 connected at one end to the casting 18 and to a similar casting at its other end. Between the ends of the link 25 is a lift rod 26 which may be operated in any desired manner.
In order to prevent the accidental displacement of the casting 18, due to side thrust, I provide downwardly projecting flanges 27 and 28 which fit the respective sides of the rail-tread, and these flanges are of sutlicient depth at the front end of the casting to engage thesidcs of the rail-tread, but they gradually merge into the wall of the casting 18, as at 29, (best shown in Fig. 5). The object of so constructing the flanges 27 and 28, is to permit the shoe to readily ride over frogs, switch-points and the like when the device is lowered upon the rail for use.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the sanding shoe is capable of having both a vertical and laterally swingof the track.
