To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chattsworth, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Mech-' anism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to hoisting mechanism and more particularly to mechanism of this class employed for operating hay-grapple and draw the truck along the supporting rail.
The above described mechanism represents no part of the present invention, but serves to illustrate the general and familiar hay hoisting mechanism for which my invention is particularly adapted. The hoisting and trip ropes are wound upon poweractuated'reels and means are provided for alternately actuating the reels to control the ropes.
The invention has for its primary object the production of an improved hoisting mechanism inexpensive and simple in construction, thoroughly efficient in operation and requiring but a minimum of power.
Another object of the invention is the production of improved mechanism for con trolling the hoisting and trip ropes of hayhoists.
A further object of the invention is the production of an improved clutch-mechanism for the control of alternately operated reels. 1
With these and other objects, in view, the invention, consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of arts will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,

Referring, now, to the illustrations the hay-hoisting mechanism consists of a haygrapple, 7, depending by a hoisting rope, 8, from a truck, 9, mounted to travel to and fro on a supporting rail, 10. On the shaft, 20, adjacent the reels are fixed blocks, 28, provided with diametrically opposite openings, 29, through which freely pass rods, 30, carried by an intermediate collar, 31, freely mounted on the shaft, 20, and provided with an annular groove, 32 within which is engaged a ring, 33, formed on a lever, 34, fulcrumed at its lower end on a suitable bearing, 35, mounted on the base. Interposed between the blocks, 28, and the collar, 31 and mounted upon the rods, 30, are compression-springs, 36, which serve to normally maintain the collar, 31, in the center between the blocks, 28.

traction on the hoisting rope, 8, it is only necessary to move the lever, 31 in the direction of the reels, 22, then when the grapple has been elevated and drawn to the point desired, the lever is thrown in the opposite direction thereby releasing the reel, 22, and actuating the companion reel to release the trip and retract the truck and grapple. Through the medium of the brake levers, 26, the reels are prevented from spinning too rapidly when released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable shaft, a pair of reels freely mounted there on, blocks fixed on the shaft adjacent the reels, a collar encircling the shaft between the blocks, rods carried by the collar and slidable through the blocks, compressionsprings interposed between the collar and the blocks, the faces of the reels being recessed to receive the ends of the rods, and the collar being movable in opposite directions longitudinally of the shaft to cause the reels to be alternately engaged by the rods.
2. In a hoisting mechanism, a base, uprights mounted thereon, friotionmollers on the uprights, a crown wheel rotatably supported by the rollers, a horizontal shaft rotatably supported by the uprights, a gear on the shaft driven by the crown-wheel, a pair of reels freely mounted on the shaft, and clutch mechanism between the reels operable to alternately actuate the reels.
