Description
. J. MORELAND.
DRAFT REGULATOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.23, 1912.
Patented Nov; 1, 191?.
INVENTOR Mc/Mw'eland WITNESSES I ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES men.
DRAFT-REGULATOR.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, iV LLIs J. MORELAND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Skanea-teles, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Draft-Regulator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates tostoves and furnaces and has particular reference to means applied to or used in connection with smoke flues for controlling the draft through the fire box.
Among the objects of the invention isto provide improved meansfor so regulating the draft as to cause the direction of the draft to be reversed through the fire box by the manipulation of a single member.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draft regulator for a. fuel burner and so arranged in connection with a smoke flue and other devices as to provide for any desired regulation of the draft or heat through a single member arranged in or adjacent to the smoke flue, thereby eliminating all the trouble and annoyance incident to dampers or drafts arranged at the front of the furnace or elsewhere.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the in vention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of one form of my improvement together with suflicient of a conventional form of furnace and smoke flue to illustrate its action; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view indicating a modified form of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings I show at 10 a. smoke flue having direct connection through a casing 11 and thimble 12 with the fire box 13 of a furnace, the casing being on a level with the thimble 12 constituting an outlet from the fire box. 14 indicates a grate supporting the bed of fire as usual. 15 is an auxiliary pipe of any suitable dimensions in cross sectional Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd N 13 1917, Application filed March 23, 1917.

form extending from the casing 11 down to a thimble 16 leading into the ash pit 17 or space below the grate.
The casing 11 may be of any suitable form in cross section and -journa-led therein on a shaft or pivot pin 18 is a main damper 19 lying on one side of the pivot pin 18 and normally closing the bottom of the'casing 11 or cutting off direct communication between the casing and the auxiliary pipe 15. On the other side of the pivot pin 18 is a damper extension which may, for convenience of description be termed a check damper 20, but constituting in effect a part of the main damper 19 inasmuch as they are always operated as a unit through the rocking of the pivot pin 18 which may be effected in any convenient manner as for example through the crank 21 to which may be attached a rod or line 22 leading to any desired place. Assuming that Fig. 1 shows the damper in its normal position it will be noted that the direct communication between the fire box and the flue, or smoke pipe 10 is unobstructed through the thimble 12 and casing 11. The damper 19 at this time lies over the upper end of the auxiliary pipe 15 and the check damper lies against the bottom of the casing closing an opening 23 formed in the casing at one side of the auxiliary pipe 15. Just below the shaft 18 the auxiliary pipe is cut away forming an opening 24 through which air may enter normally and pass thence downwardly through the auxiliary pipe and thimble 16 into the space below the grate thereby providing for normal up-draft through the grate and bed of fire. Upon swinging the damper from its normal position through an angle of 90 degrees, as indicated in dotted lines, the damper 19 will practically completely close direct communication between the fire box and the smoke flue, at the same time the check damper 20 will close the air inlet 24 in the auxiliary pipe leaving the opening 23 unguarded. Any up-draft under these conditions through the smoke flue 10' will therefore serve to cause a reverse or downward draft through the tions of the regulating member will give various results according to the amount of adjustment of such member.
In the modification of Fig. 2 the casing 11 is shown provided with a single regulating member 19 mounted upon the pivot pin or shaft 18, but the smoke flue 10 leads out from the top of the casing instead of at the end or side. The furnace parts are the same or may be of any other form. In this form of the invention the auxilary pipe 15 is shown as being made as a continuation or as a part of the casing 11. The damper 19f is journaled substantially at its middle portion and is shown in the drawing in its normal position lying diagonally across the easing 11 between the normal smoke outlet of the casing and the air inlet 24:. In other words as shown in full lines the course of the draft is inward through the inlet 24, downward through the pipe 15' and thimble 16, into the ash pit and thence upward through the fire box and out through the thimble 12 to the fine 10. hen, however, the damper is swung around its axis through an angle of 90 degrees, direct communication between the thimble 12 and the smoke flue is obstructed and indirect communication is established between it and the fire copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
box inwardly through the thimble 12 providing for any upward draft through the smoke fine to cause a down draft through the fire box. As in the other form of the invention the varying degrees of regulation may be accomplished by adjusting this damper to different intermediate positions.
I claim:
The combination with a fire box having an outlet and a smoke flue communicating therewith, of a draft regulator comprising a casing interposed between the fire box and the flue on a level with the outlet from the fire box, an auxiliary pipe leading from the casing to the space beneath thefire box, air inlet means to supply fresh air to the casing and auxiliary pipe, and a single damper member mounted in said casing and serving in one extreme position to provide direct communication between the fire box and the smoke fiue cutting off admission of fresh air to the casing and cutting off direct communication between the auxiliary pipe and casing and causing the fresh air to be admitted into the auxiliary pipe while in the other extreme position the fresh air is admitted direct to the casing and thence through the fire box in a downward direction.
