Specification 'of Letters Patent.
PatentedNov. 152 ,1917.
' Application filed April 14, 1917. s riai no. 162,067..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER L. Joi1\ nR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in Ouachita parish and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Bracket and Flag Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in lantern bracket and flag holders and is designed especially for the use of railways in holding lanterns and signal flags on the rear of trains, or at other points where such si als should be displayed.
ractically all roads are at present using a bracket for holding the lantern which bracket slips into a holder secured to the sides of passenger cars and freight cabooses, these holders being so placed that they can be readily reached from the platform, and there are usually four to each car. An objection to these holders is that at present the weight of the bracket is the only means for holding it in position, and it is liable to be jarred out of position, stoppage of the car.
My invention improves this present form by providing means for positively locking the bracket in the holder and to also aid in wedging the flag stick in so that it will not be liable to become loosened by wind.
My invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the bracket and holder.
Fig.2 is a plan view of the holder with bracket removed.
Fig. 3 is, a vertical section through the holder and locking pin, the bracket being in section.
Fig. 4-. is a section at right angles to Fig. 3.
In the drawings 1 designates a bracket having a shank portion 2 provided with a slot 3 and a wedge shaped flange l carried at the outer-end of the shank. The bracket holder comprises a plate 5 having a vertical undercut groove or channel 6 to the lower portion of which is connected a vertical, slightly tapering sleeve 7.
In one side wall of the sleeve is formed a pin receiving opening 8 and in the opposite wall a threaded opening 9, of greater diameter than the opening 8.
especially on sudden A sleeve 10 open at its inner end is threaded into the opening 9 and contains a spring 11. A pin 12 passes through a suitable perforation in the outer closed end of the sleeve 10 and is provided with acap 13 on its outer end and with a.collar l l which works in the sleeve 10. The spring 11 bears at one end on-the end of the sleeve 10 and at the other end on the collar 14.
In use the pin is drawn outwardly by means of the cap 13 and the bracket fitted 1nto place the flange 4 entering the groove or. channel 6. The pin is then released and passes through the slot 3 of the shank and into the opening 8 of the sleeve 7, thereby preventing removal of the bracket from the holder without first drawing the pin outwardly.
The sleeve 7 also is adapted to receive and hold the flag stick, said stick being notched as indicated at 15, and when inserted it straddles the pin and is held more securely than it otherwise would be.
One special advantage of the present invention is that it can be adapted to the present brackets and holders now in use so that it is unnecessary for the railroads to discard any present equipment, or to purchase entirely new parts in order to adopt the invention.
This is of considerable importance as the availability and commercial value of an invention often depends on the economy with which it can be adopted. The sleeve is notched at 7 a to receive the shank.
What I claim is 1. A device of the kind described comprising a slotted bracket and a notched flag stick, of a holder comprising a sleeve mounted vertically and adapted to receive the bracket or the stick, said sleeve having a pin receiving openin in one wall, a second sleeve threaded into the opposite wall of the first mentioned sleeve, a headed pin working through the last mentioned sleeve and having a collar working in said sleeve, and a'spring arranged in the second mentioned sleeve and bearing on said collar, said pin being adapted to pass through either the slot of the bracket or the notch of the stick, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A holder of the kind described comprising a flat plate having a channel formed vertically thereon and a sleeve carried by the lower portion of the plate and communieating with the chahnel, said sleeve being adapted to receive a suitable light or signal support, one side of said sleeve adjacent the channel being perforated, and the opposite side having a threaded opening, a, second sleeve threaded into said opemng and in alinement with the perforation, a spring in the last mentioned sleeve, and a pin working throu%h the last mentioned sleeve and transverse and pressed by said spring into said perfora-tlon, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
