A. L. WADDELL:
EDGING GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. i 1. 191a.

WITNESSES ARTHUR L. WADDELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ED GING-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114,354.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. IVADDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edging- Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to devices for gaging the sharpening of tools havlng beveled edges, but particularly to devices for gaging the edging of scissors, chisels, planebits, etc.; and has for its object the produc tion of an article of manufacture that will be simple, light, cheap, and easy of construction, and that will hold a tool in such position on a flat stone as to enable the operator to give it a uniform edge at the original, or some other desired angle.
I attain these objects by a device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation holding a scissor-blade shown in cross-section, and resting on a Whetstone; Fig. 2 is a view from in front, or left of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows a view from the rear, or right of Fig. 1, with the adjustment binding-nut removed. The same reference characters refer to the same parts in each of the several views.
The device consists of a shank A, with a holding-member E, and a milled bindingnut F, at one end; and an adjustment jamb L, slidable vertically between the lugged shoulder H, and the binding-nut I, at the other. The holding end of the shank A, is provided with threads, and the binding-nut F, is screwed down into position thereon. The projecting threaded end is then passed through a hole in the posterior jaw of the holder E, (said hole being large enough to permit its free sliding therein), and its extremity is then inserted into a smaller hole in a corresponding position in the anterior jaw, where it is firmly riveted in place.
The adjustment end of the shank A, is also provided with threads, and a nut or shoulder, H, provided with a lug to slide in the slot of the jamb L, but shallower than flush with the face thereof, is firmly screwed into position thereon, same being approximately parallel with the position of the holding member, E, as shown in Fig. 2. A second milled binding-nut I is thereupon screwed into position onthe posterior end of the shank and against the jamb, L, firmly holding same at any desired adjustment.
It will be observed that, when the blade of a pair of scissors is firmly held in place by the holder E, and the device is adjusted to the proper level, an operator, by placing the blade on a suitable Whetstone, or other abrading medium, lying on a table or other smooth plane surface, and near its edge, and placing the foot of the adjustment jamb on the surface itself, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, can, by actuating the whole thereon under suitable pressure by the hand, give to the blade a uniform edge at a given angle.
A modification might be made by placing one or both of the binding-nuts at the opposite side or sides of the part or parts bound by them, respectively; also for holding chisels, plane-bits, etc., by using a pair of holders E, turned a quarter-around with aWs facing each other, and guided by a double shank adjustable by a similar adjustment jamb; but, inasmuch as such modifications would not depart from the scope or spirit of this invention, they are expressly included therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In an edging-gage, the combination with a one-piece, recurved blade-holder and binding-nut for controlling same, of a rigid shank mounting said holder and nut (the former rigid) on one end, and having a slotted member for adjusting the device to the angle of abrasion and holding it free of the abrading medium, slidable between a shoulder and similar binding-nut mounted on the other.
2. In an edging-gage, the combination with a one-piece, recurved blade-holder and binding-nut to control same, of a one-piece shank having said holder and nut (one of the jaws of the former rigidly) mounted on one end, and having a slotted member for adjusting the device to the angle of abrasion and holding it free of the abrading medium, slidable via said slot between a lugged shoulder and a binding-nut mounted at the other, the said shank being bent upward back of the binding-nut at the blade-holding end, to correspond generally with the angle of abrasion, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. ARTHUR L. WADDELL. Witnesses:
LOUISE HILLER, Jos. A'rwoon.
