Boot and Shoe Shaves.
Nd.. 124,638 l Patented Mrch 12, 1872.
lances BYRON A. STOCKVVELL, OF SUTTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BCT AND SHOE SHAVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,638, dated March 12,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON A. STocKwnLL, of Sutton, in the county of Worcester and Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Shaves 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 represents a view of the under side ot' a boot and shoe shave embracing my improvement, and Fie. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same.
It has been found desirable, in the use of shaves for trimming the soles of boots and shoes, to have the shave provided with a guard to t up against the under sideot the soles, and thus prevent the cutter or corner of the shave from injuring the upper. These guards, as heretofore constructed, have been attached to the shave and held in position by means ot' an ordinary screw set through a slot formed in the guard and turned tightly down to clamp the parts together. To adjust the guard to the various thicknesses ot' different soles, which frequently has to be done, the holdingscrew requires to be started back or loosened with a screw-driver and the guard moved to the proper position, where it. is held with the thumb while the screw is again tightened. This operation occasions considerable annoyance and delay, and, when readjustment is often required, occupies much valuable time.
The object ot' my present invention is to obvia-te this difficulty and to provide a guard device which can be quickly and conveniently adjusted without loss ot' time, thus rendering the shave more efficient, and adapting it more perfectly to the requirements ot' the work. The nature ot' my invention consists in the combina-tion, with the blade and handle in a boot and shoe shave, of apeculiarly-con structed adjustable guard-device operator, as hereafter set forth.
1n the drawing, the part marked A represents the handle of the shave, which is made partly hollow and open and partly solid to receive the guard-adjusting devices. B indicates the cutter or blade, and C the face-plate, all of which parts may be constructed as shown in the drawing or in anyother suitable form. D indicates the adjustable guard, which runs against the bottom of the sole when the sha-ve is in use, and prevents the blade from running against and injuring the upper. This guard piece D is made of considerable length, and extends along the under side ot' the handle A, to which it is secured in such a manner that it can slide back and forth by the screw E, which passes through a longitudinal slot, F, formed in the guard piece and screws int-o the body of the handles A, as shown. The outer extremity ofthe guard piece D is turned upward into the hollow portion ot' the handle, and through the part turned up I arrange an adjustingscrew, I, by means of which the guard can be quickly and conveniently moved. The adjusting-screw I ext-ends inward from the end ofthe handle A, as shown. Its inner end, which has a bearing in the solid portion of the handle, is provided with an annular groove, into which projects the end ot' a pin or screw. J, that is set in the metal of the handle for the purpose ot' holding the screw I in position. The outer end of the screw-spindle I is provided with a bur or thumb wheel, K, by means ot' which the operator can easily revolve the screw for adjusting the guard.
It will be observed by those skilled in the use ot' boot and shoe shaves that my invention is ot' great practical in'lportance, inasmuch as by its use the operator is enabled to quickly and conveniently adjust his shave to correspond with the various thickness ot' boot or shoe soles upon which he may be at work, and this, too, without the necessity ot' using` a scre\\'-driver or other tool; but, by simply rolling the bar or head K between his thumb and iingcr, while, if the shave is held on the edge ot' the sole, the adjustment can be made with great accuracy.
Having described my improvements in boot and shoe shaves, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the handle A a-nd blade B in a boot and shoe shave, of the slidim@v `lauard piece D and adjusting screw I K arranged in and carried by the handle, substantially as described, whereby theguard can bc quickly and conveniently moved without the use of a screw-driver or other tool, substantially as and for the'purpose set forth.
2. I also claim the handle A, made partly concave or hollow and open and partly solid to receive the guard-adjusting devices, as shown and set forth.
