To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. BLAGKIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester Depot, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool- Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its obj ect to-provide a simply constructed yet highly efficient tool post tor lathes and the like, so mounted as to permit the tool to be tilted downwardly andvupwardly and adjustable longitudinally of the lathe carriage as well as vertically.
- lilith the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:

In the drawings above briefly described the numeral l has reference to a suitable base adapted to be mounted on a lathe carriage for movement transversely of the line of travel of said carriage, said base having a horizontal bore 2 formed transversely therethrough and opening through its upper side. The bore 2 receives therein a rocker 3 in the form of a sleeve split along its upper side at 4 and having its edges spaced apart and disposed in downwardly converging relation, the lower side of the sleeve being descreased in thickness as indicated at 5 so as to permit said sleeve to readily expand and contract to respectively hold it against or permit rocking movement in the bore 2.
A semicylindrical anchor member or wedge 6 is disposed within the rocker 3 and the reduced lower end of a tool post 7 is swiveled= to said wedge, said post having theusualpvertical slotrS to receive the lathe tool 9 and a screw'lO for clamping said tool 1n position. A V-shaped `wedge l1 is slidable vertically-on the tool post 7 and is received between the downwardly converging edges 4; of the rocker 3 so that as this wedge is forced downwardly kby tightening of. the screw 10,it and the wedge 6 will coperate in expanding the rocker 3 to bind the latter frictionally against the vwall ofthe bore 2. rIhe upper side of the wedge l1 is formed with a boss 12 upon which a tool rest 13 in the Vform of an annular' vnut is threadedby means of rather coarse threads. provision, the tool 9 may be adjusted `vertically tothe required extent.
By the construction above described, it will be obvious that loosening of the screw 10 will permit therocker 3 to turn inthe By this Y bore 2so that the active end of the tool 9 may A be lowered or raised in respect to the work, thus.insuring that it be-presented at the proper angle for accomplishing the'best results.4 This arrangement of parts also allowsfthe tool post to be adjusted longitudinally of the rocker 3 and thus permits the tool to operate at the extreme left hand end of the work. Also, as above stated, the tool is rendered vertically adjustable by the rest 13. The improved device is particularly advantageous for `holding boring tools but it is also adapted for numerous other purposes, and regardless of its use will be extremely efficient.
On account of the advantages above set forth, the construction shown and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of the improved tool post but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
I claim:
1. The combination with a support having a horizontally extending bore opening through its upper side, o-f an expansible rocker mounted in said bore, a tool post rising from said rocker, means coacting with said post for clamping a tool in place, and means for automatically expanding the rocker when said clamping means is tightened.
2. The combination with a support having a horizontally extending bore opening through its upper side, of an expansible rocker mounted in said bore, a tool post rising from said rocker and adjustable along the same, means coacting with said post for clamping a tool in place, and means for automatically expanding the rocker ywhen said clamping means is tightened.
8. The combination with a support having a horizontallyextending bore opening through its upper side, of an expansible rocker mounted in said bore, a tool post rising from said rocker, means coacting With said post for clamping a tool in place, and means mounted on said post for automatically expanding said rocker when the ciamping means is tightened.
4'. The combination with a support having a horizontally extending bore opening through its upper side, of an expansible rockermounted in said bore, a tool post rising from said rocker, means coacting with said post for clamping a tool in place, and a wedge mounted on the post for automatically expanding said rocker when f said clamping means is tightened.
5. The combination with a support having a horizontally extending bore opening through its upper side, of an expansible rocker mounted in said bore, a tool post rising from said rocker, means coactingA with said post for clamping the tool in place, and a pair of wedges disposed respectively onthe interior and exterior of said rocker and mounted on the tool post for automatically expanding the rocker when the clamping means is tightened.
6. The combination with a support having arhorizontal bore opening through its upper side, of a split sleeve received in said boreand having its split disposed upwardly, an anchor member disposed in said sleeve, a toolpost rising from said anchor member and having a transverse slot to receive a tool, a tool rest to receive said tool thereon, said rest having a wedge extending into said split cf the sleeve, andv a clamping screw threaded downwardly through the upper end of said post and into the slot thereof.
7. The combination with a support having a horizontal bore opening through its upper side, of a split sleeve received in said bore'and having its split disposed upwardly, a wedge in said sleeve, a tooi post extending into said sleeve through the split thereof and swiveled to said wedge, said post having a transverse slot to receive a tool, a tool rest slidahle on said post and including a wedge extending into the split of said sleeve, and a set screw threaded downvvardly through the upper end of the post for clamping theV tool in place.
