Description

POSTAGE STAMP RECEPTACLE AND APPLYING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED DC I Patented Oct. 30, 1917.

JOHN D. MOHB, OF OIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
POSTAGE-STAMP RECEPTAGLE AND APPLYING DEVICE.
Specification of. Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 191 '7.
Application filed October 12, 1916. Serial No. 125,259.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN D. Morin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oil City, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Postage- Stamp Receptacles and Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification;
My invention is designed primarily to carry stamps and to provide for their application to the letters or other mail matter through the medium of the receptacle and its associated parts so as to render unnecessary the licking of the stamp and its application in the ordinary way, but theinvention by slight changes can be adapted for use in the application of labels and stickers of all kinds including the moistening and sealing of envelops.
I am aware'that it has been proposed prior to my invention to provide devices of this general type, but my invention is unique in its structure and is not only simple but very effective.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure l is a section showing the moisten ing means, the stamp compartment and the applying device.
Fig. 2 is a section showing the plunger in a depressed position for the applying of the stamp or other article.
Fig. 3 shows the device tilted with the roller in action.
Fig. at is a bottom plan view, and
Fig. 5 is a detail of the plunger.
A casea is provided with two compartments 6 and 0, 6 containing the moistening 7 medium which is entered through the cap (Z, and a wicking or felting e protrudes through a passage 7, and enables the user of the device to moisten the surface to which the stamp is, to be applied. Directly beneath the compartment Z2 is located a roller 9, which applies pressureto the stamp or other article after it has been placed upon the letter or other surface subsequent. to the moistening of the surface as shown in Fig.
stamps are inserted within the receptacle occupying the position normally as shown in Fig. 1, being pressed upwardly by the section a. This plate does not entirely cover the bottom of the casing and hence as the plunger is forced down, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the edge of the lowermost stamp or other article is forced into contact with the previously moistened surface of the envelop or other surface and then it is only necessary to tilt and roll the receptacle as shown in Fig. 3 to cause the stamp to pass from the receptacle and come under the pressure of the roller to apply it securely.
The stamps may be inserted through the bottom. ofthe receptacle, or the top may be hinged so as to permit the withdrawal of the plunger and thus permit of the insertion of the stamps through the top of the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
An afiixing device including moistening means, a stamp container having a spring bottom and a plunger having a downwardly extending rib in line with the opening in the bottom adapted when the plunger is de pressed to bring the bottom stamp in contact with the moistened surface intermediate between the edge of the spring plate and the free edge of the stamp, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
JOHN D. MOHR.
