Be it known that 1, Norm B. CIIARTIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, in the county of Benton and State ll'ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Comb-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates broadly to brushing and scrubbing apparatus and has particular reference to such apparatus adapted for the cleaning of combs, by subjecting the same to the action of mo"able brush or brushes a cleansing liquid.

An important object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is adapted to thoroughly clean a comb, in a highly expeditious and convenient manner.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for moving the comb into and out ofcontact with the cleansing liquid, while the same is being subjected to the action of a rotatable brush or brushes.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

ing a screw-threaded opening 15, receiving an adjusting bolt 16, which is provided upon its upper end with a c'oacting lower jaw 17 having swiveled connection therewith. It is thus apparent that the clamping bracket may be conveniently adjusted for securely attachinglthe receptacle or trough 10 to a portion of the bureau, table or other support.

Formed upon one vertical end of the receptacle or trough 10 is a vertically eXtendingv guide 17, having a vertical gnideway 0r socket 18 formed therein, for receiving a vertically reciprocatory rack 19, shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. This rack is provided with a longitudinally extending vertical opening 20, forming spaced vertical bars 21, upon which are 'formed ratchet teeth 22.

The sets of teeth 22 are adapted to be alternately engaged by a set of teeth or pins 23, rigidly secured to the inner face of a large gear 24:, which is pivotally mounted upon the end of the receptacle 10 and turned or rotated by means of a hand crank 25. as shown.

The large gear2el engages and drives a small gear 26, rigidly mounted upon a stubshaft 27, journaled within a bearing 28. Secured to the inner end of the stub-shaft 27 is a small gear 2.9, engaging a gear 30, which engages and drives a gear 31, in an opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the gear 30. The gears 30 and .31 are rigidly mounted upon shafts 32, corresponding ends of which are reduced at 33, and rotatably held within bearings or sockets 34-, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. The opposite ends of the shafts 32 have recesses 35, rotatably receiving longitudinally adjustable bolts or members 36, screwthreaded in stationary bearings 37, as shown. Rigidly mounted upon the shafts 32 are rotatable brushes 38, arranged witha in the upper portion of the receptacle 10,

Upon the rotation of the crank 25 the-teeth 23' alternately engage the sets of teet-h22, thus causing the rack 19 to reciprocate vertically. The comb is therefore carried between the rotating brushes 38, which preferably rotate in opposite directions and have their inner portions traveling downwardly. The comb is brought into and out of contact with the cleansing liquid, while being subjected to the action of the rotating brushes.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a receptacle for holding. a cleansing liquid, of a vertically movable device for engagement with a comb to move it into and out of the receptacle, a reciprocatory member secured to the device and arranged at one end of the receptacle and comprising spaced bar's carrying sets of teeth with an opening arranged between the sets of teeth, a pivot element secured to said end of the receptacle and passed through said opening of the reciprocatory member, a main gear carried by the pivot element and provided upon its periphery with gear teeth and upon its inner face with a set of laterally projecting teeth to alternately engage with the teeth of said bars, a pair ofrotatable brushes arranged within the receptacle, and a pair of gears connectedv with the brushes and engaging each other, with one gear driven-by said main gear.
