To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, REMER T. llomma citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quilting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a quilting device which may be employed to support a quilt in such a manner that the same may be quickly and conveniently stitched either by hand or with a machine.

The primary object of the invention is to provide aquilting device of this character. in which a frame for holding a portion of a quilt to be stitched in an extended position is carried by a trolley mounted to travel upon a track suspended from a suitable support in an inclined position, so that as the trolley moves by gravity along the inclined track the extended portion of the quilt is passed in front of an operator seated at one end of the frame or beneath a needle on a sewing machine thus enabling the quilt to be quickly and easily stitched throughout its length in either manner found desirable.

Another object of the invention is to provide the quilting device with a trolley which is so constructed that it is both foldable and extensible thus enabling the trolley to be used in connection with quilts which vary in size and to occupy very little space when not in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide the quilting device with a quilt carrying frame which may be easily and quickly connected with or disconnected from the trolley and is so constructed that the quilt carried thereby may be supported upon the frame in such a manner that it may be readily passed beneath the, needle and over the feeding mechanism of a sewing machine when it is desired to stitch the quilt in this manner and the position of the quilt changed upon the quilt carrying frame without disconnecting the, frame from the trolley. r

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved quilting device showing the same connected with a suitable support and in position to pass a quilt arranged upon the quilt carrying frame beneath the needle or a sewing machine for stitching the quilt.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a support for the improved quilting device and which in this instance has been shown as the ceiling of a room, said ceiling having fixed thereto spaced brackets 2 and 8. grooved wheels 7 mounted adjacent the upper ends of end bars 8 of the trolley, said end bars being held in spaced relation by slotted and crossed bars 10 having their terminals pivotally connected with the terminals of the end bars 8.

A binding screw 11 is passed through. the slots in the crossed bars 10 and is provided with a nut through the adjustment of which upon the screw the end bars 8 may be moved toward each other to render the trolley adaptable for use in connection Lli with different size quilts or to be folded as shown in Fig. 4c in the drawing so that it will occupy very little room when 0t in use.

A quilt carrying frame 12 is swingingly connected with the trolley 6 through the medium of flexible members 13 detachably connected with rin s 1st carried b r the lower ends of the end bars 8, said quiltcarrying frame having its side bars 15 held in spaced relation by transversely extending and slot ted end bars ltl, said side bars having quilt winding mechanism 17 mounted thereon, so that the position of the quilt connected with and supported by the quilt carrying frame may be changed thereon as the occasion may require and a portion of the quilt held in extended position for stitching purposes.

Through the above described manner of arranging the side bars 15 and connecting the quilt carrying frame with the trolley 6, it will be seen that the quilt designated in the drawing by the numeral 18 is supported by the adjustable frame 12 in such a manner that a portion of the quilt is held in extended position between the side bars 15, so that the extended portion of the quilt may in readily passed beneath the needle on a sewing machine 20 arranged at one end of the frame and which in this instance has been shown employed for stitching the quilt 18. 7

hen it is desired to use the improved quilting device to support aquilt during the quilting operation in such a position that it may be easily and quickly stitched either by. hand or with a machine as the occasion may require, the trolley 6 is arranged in set up position upon the track 5 adjacent the bracket 2.

The quilt frame 12 is now swingingly connected with the rings 1e on the trolley and the quilt to be stitched arranged upon the frame 12 and connected with the winding mechanism upon the side bars 15 in such a manner that the quilt may be unwoundfrom the winding mechanism upon one of the bars 15 and wound upon the 'l nding mechanism upon the other bar 15 as the occasion requires.

If it is desired to stitch the quilt by hand, the operator may stand or sit at the ri ht of the quilt carrying frame 12 and in such position that as the trolley 6 travels over the track 5 under the influence of gravity, the quilt upon the quilt carrying frame 12 will pass in front of the operator and may be stitches in a convenient and satisfactory manner.

When it is desired to use a machine as shown in the drawings for stitching the quilt, the machine is arranged at one end of the frame 12 with the side bars 15 arranged upon opposite sides of the needle within the machine and as the machine is 2 and again. caused to travel toward the bracket 3 through the inclination of the track 5 and the feeding mechanism .on the machine. 7

Through the above described manner of connecting the quilt carryingframe with the trolley and the trolley with the track 5, it will be seen that various designs may be formed upon the quilt by the stitching as the quilt carrying frame and trolley moves backwardly and forwardly between the brackets 2 and 3.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is at once apparent that a quilting device has been provided which though extremely simple in constructionand inexpensive of manufacture, is highly efficient in use for the purpose set forth. 7

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

1. In a quilting device, spaced and adjustable track supports, an inclined trackcarried by said supports, bars having rollers thereon to roll on said track, rings on said bars, a pair of crossed bars having the terminals thereofpivotally connected with the terminals of the first mentioned bars, each of said crossed bars having a slot extending longitudinally thereof for the greater portion-of its length, a binding screw passing through said slot and connecting said crossed-bars, and a quilt carrying frame detachably connected with said rings 2. In a quilting device, spaced brackets, a plate slidably mounted on each of said brackets and having an arm extending downwardly therefrom. said arms being of unequal length. a cable extending between and supported by said arms, an adjustable and foldable trolley to travel onisaid cable, and an adjustable quilt holding frame detachably connected with saidtrolley.
