Be it known that I, JOHN'J. LYoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cork-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to a tool for extracting corks from bottles, jugs and other like vessels. Oftentimes a cork' becomes pushed into a bottle or jug and it is then a very difficult matter to remove the same from the bottle or jug.
It is the object 'of'this invention to provide a cheap, convenient and easily manipulatedtool whereby a cork maybe removed from the interior of a bottle.
The invention consists in a device'of th character set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 10 is the shank portion of the cork extractor and 11 the handle, said shank portion 10 terminating in a laterally extending prong 12. The shank portion 10 is curved laterally adjacent to the prong 12 at 13 and is provided with a pair of laterally extending prongs 14.

The curved cam-shaped portion 13 of the shank enables the user ,to tip the extractor, when he is first causing the same to engage the cork, sothat, the} prong 12 can first be manipulated to engage the,
end of the cork. As the cork is beingwvithdrawnthe cam-shaped portion 13flengages .the inside -of the neck of thebottle and forces the prong listill farther into the cork to firmly anchor the cork to .theextractor.
In Fig. 6a modified form of my cork extractor is illustrated in which the prongs 18 and 19 are connected together by a straight portion 20 of the shank 21.
Referring to the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, 22 is the shank of the extractor and 23 is the handle fast thereto. A laterally extending prong 24 is provided at the end of the shank 22 and also two laterally extending prongs 25 are provided which are located on opposite sides of the median axial line of said shank.
The shank 22 is divided into two parts 26 and 27. The part 26 is cylindrical in cross section so that when the device is in use and the handle is grasped by the user the cylindrical portion 26 of the shank may come between the fingers of the hand of the user without injuring the same. The portion 27 is flattened and has a substantially fiat inner face 28 and a convexly curved outer face 29 as clearly illustrated in Fig.
9. The portion 27 of the shank is curved longitudinally thereof to give the saine a convexly curved outline longitudinally .of said shank as at 30. By having a flat face 2-8 and a. .convexly curved face 29 the end of the shank which grasps the cork takes up a small amount of':ro.om in the interior of the neck of the bottle and approximately fits the inner surface of the neck of the bottle and assists in preventing the cork from tipping out of position When the inner face 28 is pressed against the periphery of the cork during the Withdrawal of the same from the bot'tle.
t Will be noted that in each of the different forms of my invention hereinbefore set forth the pairs of laterally extending pron- gs 14, 19 and 25 have the edge thereof which is farthest removed from the end prong of the extractor extending substantially at right angles to the shank. This angle may be a right angle or it may be an acute angle, it being desirable to have the angle such that when a cork is being Withdrawn there is no tendency for the pair of prongs to be forced out of the cork, but, on the contrary the tendency is to have said prongs sink into and obtain a secure hold against Withdrawal from said cork.
The extractor illustrated in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive is operated in substantially the same manner as hereinbefore described With relation to the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. a

Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire by Letters Patent to se cure is:
1. A tool for extracting a cork from a bottle comprising a shank portion and a single pointed centrally located prong projecting laterally from one end of said shank and a pair of prongs located on opposite sides of said shank each prong of said pair of prongs having the edge-thereof Which is farthest removed from said end prong extending at an angle less than an obtuse angle to said shank, said end prong beingfseparated from said'pair of prongs by a portion of said shank having an inner edge substantially free from projections;
