Description
JOHN SKAGEN, 0F BENTON, IOWA.
CLOTHES-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed January 30, 1917. Serial No. 145,463.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SKAGEN, subject of King of Norway, residing at Fentoruin the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clothes boilers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a wash or clothes boiler, a cage adapted to contain the clothes and which is provided with means adapted to catch over the edges of the boiler whereby the cage and its contents are held at an elevated position with relation to the bottom of the boiler and hence the clothes are prevented from burning when the boiler is in position upon a stove or other heater.
Another object of the invention is to provide in combination with the said sustaining means handles adapted to be used for lifting the cage out of the boiler when desired. These handles and the sustaining devices are of special design and configuration and may be readily detached from the cage when not in use.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boiler showing the cage in position therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one handle and sustaining device.
As illustrated in the acoompanyin drawing the boiler 1 is of usual configuratlon and is adapted to rest upon the top of a stove or other heater during the operation of boiling the clothes. A cage 2 of open work wire is adapted to fit in the upper portion of the boiler 1.
Sustaining devices are adapted to be applied to the ends of the cage 2 at the upper edge thereof and as these devices are alike a description of one will answer. Each sustaining device-comprises wires 3 which are twisted together as at 4. The extreme lower ends of the said wires are formed into hooks 5 which are adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the boiler 1 when the cage 2 is supported in an elevated position therein.
Above the twist 4 the ends of the wires 3 are formed into outwardly turned portions 6 which are adapted to engage a handle, hereinafter described. Each sustaining member carries at its upper end a handle 7 which is pivoted on the portions 6. The said handles have hooks 8 which are adapted to engage under the edge of the cage 2.
'When the handles 7 are grasped the cage 2 and its contents'may be readily lifted out of the boiler 1 and thus the clothes may be removed from the boiler while the water may be permitted to drain back into the same. After the clothes are relieved of the excessive water the cage 2 may be placed upon a support and the sustaining members and handles may be disconnected from the cage by removing the hooks 8 from under the upper edge portion of the said cage.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that means of simple and durable structure are provided for holding a cage in an elevated position in a wash boiler and that the said means may be easily and quickly removed from or applied to the cage when desired.
Having thus described my invention I claim In combination with a wash boiler, a cage adapted to fit therein and composed of open work material, sustaining devices formed from wire having hooks at their lower ends adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the boiler and provided at their upper ends with outwardly turned portions, and handles pivoted on the said portions and having hooks engageable with the cage.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN SKAGEN.
