Be it known that 1, Isaac N. ROYAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Yalley, in the county of Houston and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Cutters; and 1' do declare the following to bea full, clear, aiul exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cutters and more particularly to a machine for cutting side meat although obviously it may be used for other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character in which the knife is so constructed and mounted as to have a sliding movement through the meat and in which the leverage is so great that the cutting operation may be effected with a minimum amount of eXertion on the part of the operator.
li ith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cutter constructed in accordance with this invention, with the knife shown raised ready for use;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the knife in use; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof.
In the accompanying drawing a supporting structure is shown in the form of a bench or table 1 having a slot 2 extending transversely thereof and through which a knife 5 is designed to operate. This knife 5 is fulcrumed at one end in a standard 6, said standard being preferably composed of a heavy piece of strap iron bent midway its ends into substantially inverted U-shape and of any desired length according to the size of the knife in connection with which it is to be used, although it may be cast if desired.
The arms of this inverted U-shaped standard have the free ends of their arms bent laterally outward at right angles and in opposite directions to form attaching feet 7 which are preferably apertured to receive fastening elements for securing the standard to the table. One of the feet 7 is engaged with tne table on one side of the slot at a point spaced froi'n both ends and the other on the other side of saidslot,thereby positioning the closed upper end of the standard directly over the slot. The opposed members or arms of said standard are arranged in close proximity at their connected upper ends as shown at S and apertured to form bearings for the knife 5 and are oifset laterally out ward at points spaced from the connection between them so that the fulcrum end 9 of the knife may be firmly held against walobling by said ends 8 and ample space provided between the standard members or legs below the fulcrum of the knife to permit the knife to move freely without contacting with said members,
The standard 6 spans slot 2 at a point spaced from its rear end to provide for the passage of the knife through said standard members and through the slot when in operation.
The knife 5 is constructed as shown in Fig. 1 with a cutting blade 10 having a fulcrum arm 11 at one end extending at an acute angle from the upper or blunt edge and a handle 12 at its other end. The blade 10 has its arm disposed at an acute angle, so that when the free end of arm 11 is fulcrumed between the upper ends of the standard legs and the knife lowered into cutting position, adirect downward thrust and then a sliding movement through the meat or other article being cut is produced, as to enable a thick piece of siding or other meat to be cut through with very little exertion. Moreover, the lateral fulcrum arm projecting from the straight portion of the blade provides great leverage for the knife.
It will thus be observed that this formation of the knife and the fulcrum means therefor produces cutter which is simple and strong and may be operated for cutting large pieces of meat by the exertion of very little strength.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the in vention appertains, and while I have de scribed the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

In a cutter of the class ClGSClllOGCLthQCOlD- bination of a support having a slot therein, a standard mounted on said support adjacent said slot and spaced from the rear end of said slot, a knife operating in said slot and comprising a long sweeping blade eceentrically curved throughout its length with a handle at one end and a laterally extending arm at the other, said arm being fulcrumed at its terminal on the upper end of said standard and extending inwardly at an acute angle from the inner or non-cutting edge of said blade, the blade being thereby operable to produce a direct downward thrust and then a rearward shearing cut, the blade and slot being so proportioned that the blade is housed coinpletelywithin the slot when in its extreme lowered position with its arm disposed above the support at one end of the slot and the handle at the other end. 7 i
