end the plunger 20 is provided with a reduced portion 82 which provides an annular space 33 communicating'with the upper end of the inlet port 2 6. Air pressure finds its the plunger 9, such member comprising a leather ring or pad 37 which is retained: in normal posltion by means of a stifi'ening member 38, preferably sheet steel. A1r 1s introduced for a squeezing operation into the cylinder 8 beneath the impact and valve member A through the port opening 39.
When the machine is operated as a squeezer, assuming that the mold parts'have been placed in position on the plunger 9, and that the yoke has been brought into operative position and locked, air is introduced into the cylinder 8 beneath the member A through the port 39 and the plunger 9 is thereby elevated and squeezes the mold, during such operation the member A acting as a valve to close the surge ports 21 formed in'the bottom of the plunger 9; When, however, the machine is utilized for a jolt ramming operation, air is introduced into the cylinder 22 through the inlet port 26 and port openings 34 and 35,-thereby elevating the j olting plunger 20 which carries with it the plunger 9. When the plunger has been raised a distance sufficient to cause the annular chamber 33 to communicate with the exhaust port 27, there will follow, because ofthe exhaust of pressure, a re duction of pressure in the space above the valve 28 which, in conjunction with the pressure which accumulates beneath the lower o face of the valve, will cause the valve to move upwardly to closed position, covering the inlet port 26. Upon exhaust of pressure within the cylinder through the exhaust port 27 the plunger and its associated parts will fall, the impact being received by the repeated until such time as the mold. has
' been jolt rammed andthe operator turns off the valve controlling the supply of pressure to the inlet port 26. During this olt rammin o eration the sur e .orts 21 rovider means for the ready flow of the air confined in the cylinder 8, thereby preventing the formation of a vacuum and causingthe machine to operate easily. To facilitate this n operation, avport 4:0 is drilled in the wall of the plunger 9 in such position as to be uncovered when the plunger 9 reaches its upper stroke limit during jolting.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my invention is simple in character, occupies a minimum amount of space and is so constructed that it may be readily applied to standard forms of power squeezers to transform them into jolt and squeeze machines. 7 7 r v Itwill be noted that the machine as thus transformed is economical in operationbecause of the fact that a jolting piston of relatively small area is used.- For a squeezing operation, a plunger having a largeefiective area is required in order to secure the pressure requisite to properly squeeze "the mold. Such a large area, however, is-unwould waste considerable pressure. WVith a jolt plunger of small dimension, this wast age is avoided.
