i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2,1917..
Application iled November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,383.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvUs A. SIEFKEN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooch-Fastening Devices, 0f which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to safety-fastening devices for brooches, breast pins, badges and the like, and the object of the invention is toprovide means for preventing the accidental disengagement of the pin from its guard and thereby preventing possible loss of the brooch or other article of jewelry.
Afurther object is to provide a safety fastening device which will be positive and reliable in its action and one that cannot possibly become accidentally displaced.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication,
Figure l is a bottom view of a brooch with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the guard and safety device,
Fig. 3 is a similar View in section, showing the preferred construction and manner of mounting the safety catch.
In the drawing, 2 represents the backportion of a brooch of ordinary construction, which I have usedV to illustrate the application of my invention. 3 is a pin pivoted at 4: on the back of the brooch. 5 is a pin guard, made as usual in the form of a hook, and having a base portion 6 that is mounted on the back of the brooch. 7 is a safety catch pivoted at 8 on the base ofthe guardy and having a lug 9 which engages a coiled spring l0 that is mounted in a recess 11 in the base. This lug is arranged on the lower edge of the catch beneath the pivot 8. On the upper side of the pivot a catch is provided with a tooth or lug 12 which projects upwardly to a point near theend of thel edge vof the tooth l2 and the outer edge of v said upper wall is in the path of an arm 14 which projects upwardly from the rear edge of the catch and forms a finger grip for rocking the catch and also limits 4the for-V ward tilting movement thereof when it is released and allowed to swing through the pressure of the spring 10 to its locking position. y
To use the device, the armklt is pressed backwardly to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. V3, thereby exposing the gap between the catch and the end of the guard. When the pin has been inserted under the guard the arm llis released, the catch will return to its full line position and positively prevent any possibility of disengagement of the pin from the guard' until the catch is again retracted. v
I claim as my invention: The combination, with a pin guard having a hook portion and slotted opening in thev shank thereof and a recess beneath said opening, of a .catch pivoted near one end within said opening beneath the point of said guard, andhaving a lug projecting lupwardly to a position adjacent to the end of said uard and also having a heel in the rear of said pivot, a spring mounted within said recess to engage said heel for normally holding saidv lug near the end of said guard and across the opening of said hook portion, and said catch having an upwardly projecting arm forming va finger grip for tilting said catch outwardly against the tension of said spring and moving said lug to expose the opening in the hook portion of said guard, inwardypressure on said arm holding said catch in its locking position.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1916.
GUsrAvUs A. sinrinni.
