ll'HS invention relates gem-willy to biting jacks and more particularly to an automobile jack.
The object of the invention is to provide an automobile lifting jack of pressed sheet metal, the various parts being eonstru t d "lid arranged with the idea of obtaining an exceedingly light jaelt and at the some time one that. will be strong. durable and easily operated to either lift or lower a load step y step.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel eonstrurtion and ar rangement of the various parts as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the, claims.

In carrying outmy invention I provide a standard 10 which is pi-el'erablv. made from. a single piece of sheet metal folded or bent upon itself so as to provide parallel sides and a closed hack and if desired a sheet metal front 10 can be inserted between and connerted to the forward edges of the side members. The ratehet teeth of the lift bar are engaged by the pawls l9 and 20 pivoted respoetively upon the pins 21 and '22 between the jaws 23 ofjthe lever 24. The pawls 19 and 20 are also of stamped metal. the pawl 19 being longer than the pawl 20, and the pin 2! whirh serves as a pivot for the pawl 19 also serves as a pivot for the lifting lever.

By throwing the shifting lever 27 up as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the spring rod is bowedforwardly and throws the cam to its forward or raising position, and when the shifting lever 27 is thrown down as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the spring rod 28 is bowed rearwardly and the cam is thrown to its rearward or lowering position.
The cam 26 is a metal plate pivoted between the jaws of the lever head, and has a slot 30 in which moves the pin 22. This cam also has a notch 31, and this slot and notch together with the general contour of the cam produce a curved finger 32, a head 33 and a dog 34, the finger 32 being adapted to engage the pawl 20 and the dog 34 engage the pawl 19 while the head 33 is adapted to engage both the pawls 19 and 20 according to the position of the cam and lever. The finger 32 has an end portion 32 pro jccting toward the head 33.
The operation of the parts is as follows: For raising the lift bar 12 the shifting lever 27 is pushed up as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 bowing the spring rod 28 forwardly and exerting spring pressure upon the cam 26. As the operating lever 24 is forced downwardly the pawl 20 engages the ratchet teeth of the lift bar and acts as the lifting pawl, the'bar sliding freely past the pawl 19 which is held against said bar by the dog 34! and the parts remain in this osition during the entire mo ement of the ever. Upon the return of the lever the pawl 19 is held in enga ement with the ratchet face of the lift bar y the dog 34 of cam 26 and acts as a holding pawl, holding the same in its raised position while the lifting pawl 20 is moved downwardly in order to engagethe ratchet face of the lift bar for a further upward movement of the same. These operations are continued until the lift bar has been raised to the desired point, carrying with it the load to be raised.
When it is desired to lower the ratchet bar and the load resting thereon, the shifting lever 27 is thrown down to its lowerosition as indicated in Figs. 5, 6 and the operating lever is then worked and down as before and during this op- 7, an p eration the pawl 20 acts as the work or loadcarryingpawl and the pawl 19 acts again as the holding pawl, and the cam 26 in its shifted position serves to maintain the pawls in their roper operative positions. The pawl 20 re s freely into engagement with the ratchet ar just as the lever has completed its downward movement inasmuch as said pawl 20 is free of the finger 32 and the head 33 engages the pawl 19 as shown in Fig. 5 and holds it out of engagement with the ratchet bar so that as the lever is moved upWardly the ratchet 20 moves downwardly supporting the lifting bar which is being lowered and just as the lever reaches the end of its upward movement and. the pawl 20 the end of its downward movement, the finger 32 forces the pawl 20 out of engagement with the ratchet bar and the pawl 19 being by this time freed from contact with the head. 33 drops into holding engagement with the ratchet bar. As the lever is moved down again to obtain a fresh grip of the pawl 20 upon the lifting bar, said pawl 20 is kept out of engagement by the finger 32 until the pawl has been lifted free from the end of said finger as shown in Fig. 5 and as the pawl 20 drops into engagement with the ratchet bar the pawl 19 is drawn out of engagement so that the lowering operation can take place. Fig. 5 illustrates the beginning of a lowering movement, it being noted that the spring 28 has thrown the holding pawl 19 out of engagement with the lifting bar through the engagement of the part 33 with the pawl. Fig. 6, shows the lowering position in an advanced. stage, it being noted that the pawl 20 has now come into engagement with the end 32* of the finger 30 thereby causing the turning of the cam about the pivot 21 against the tension of the spring 28 and permitting the holding pawl 19 to. drop into the path of the ratchet teeth. In Fig. 7, is illustrated the maximum elevated POSI- tion of the hand lever 25 and the maximum lowered position of the pawl 20, it being noted that the load has now shifted from the pawl 20 to the holding pawl 19, and the pawl 20 has been kicked out of engagement with the ratchet teeth by the finger 32, the two being in engagement and the spring 28 having been put under tension as illustrated in Fig. 6. By lowering the hand lever 25, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the pawl 20 is again elevated past engagement with the finger 32 and this pawl is thereby permitted to fall into engagement with the bar to relieve the holding pawl 19 of the load, the pawl 19 being kicked out by the spring 28 as soon as invention, what of the kind described, the

In a device of the kind described, the combination with a standard, of a lifting member movable therein, a lever pivoted thereto, working and holding pa wls connected to said lever at different points, a reversible member arranged upon said lever, said reversible member being, adapted in the lowering position to operate upon both pawls and in the raising position to operate upon the holding pawl, a shifting lever, and spring means interposed between said. shifting lever and reversible member.
3. In a device of the kind described, the rombination with a standard, of a lifting member movable therein, a lever pivoted thereto, a working and a holding pawl connected at diticrent points with said lever, a.
cam arranged within the casing and adapted to operate upon said pawls, said cam being reversible and having a central head projecting upwardly between and being adapted to engage either of said pawls, said cam also having on opposite sides from the head a finger and a dog for respectively engaging the pa wls, and means for reversing said cam and maintaining it in its adjusted position.
