Description
M. NIELSEN! NEEDLE THHEAD'ER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.28. I916.
1 ,24 ,42? Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
WITNESSES j [NI/EH70!) 4 TIOR/VEYS MARTIN NIELSEN, OF. EAST, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
NEEDLE-THREADER. I
Application filed December 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN NIELSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented a new and Improved Needle-Threader, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a needle threader including a magnifying glass, a needle holder which is adapted to present the needle opening in the focal plane of the glass.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive needle threader which can be easily applied to scissors.
With the above and other objects in View, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of scissors pro vided with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the scissors showing the threader in operative position, the dotted line in the same figure showing the starter in the inoperative position; and
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings, 4 is a magnifying glass the frame 5 of which is secured to one of the handles 6 of the scissors so that said magnifying glass is in the plane of the handles and, therefore, protected from injury. The frame 5 may form an integral part of one of the handles and the magnifying glass set thereinto. Preferably the magnifying glass 4 is depressed slightly below the surface of the handles so as to reduce any possibility of damaging the mag nifying glass. The frame 5 of the magni fying glass has an extension 7 pointing toward the blades 8 of the scissors in which an aperture 9 is formed substantially in the longitudinal central line of the scissors. A foldable member 10 has at one end a split stud 11 which fits snugly into the aper- Specification 0f 13etters Patent. Patented Sept 25, 191"},

ture 9. The other end of said foldable member has a socket 12 which is adapted to accommodate a needle. The member 10 is folded through the medium of a hinge 13 located in close proximity to the stud so that the member may be folded close to the scissors, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
To thread a needle the member 10 is unfolded from the dotted position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in full line in the same figure. A needle is inserted into the socket so as to bring the eye of the needle substantially opposite the magnifying glass. The length of the member 10 is such that the socket 12 is substantially on a line in the focal plane of the magnifying glass 4; consequently a needle placed into the socket will be in the focal plane of the magnifying glass. The scissors are held in a manner substantially as shown in Fig. 2, the needle being maintained in the socket by means of the fingers, or, if desired, a screw may be provided for locking the needle in the socket. The thread can then be passed through the eye of the needle, as it will be sharply in the focus of the magnifying glass.
If desired the member 10 may be withdrawn from the opening and the magnifying glass 4 used for inspecting the stitching, as any ordinary magnifying glass may be used. This arrangement permits the use of the magnifying glass for the purpose of threading a needle, and also for inspecting sewing, for persons who have defective eyesight but who have to sew.
I claim:
1. A needle threader comprising, a mag nifying glass, a suitable holder for the glass to protect its surface from injury, and a foldable member secured to the holder adapted to present a socket for a needle in a line lying in the focal plane of the magnifying glass.
2. A needle threader comprising, a magnifying glass, a suitable holder for the glass presenting surfaces above the glass surface to protect said surface from injury, and a member detachable from said holder adapted to present a socket for a needle, said socket being adapted to lie in the focal plane of the magnifying glass When secured to the holder. 3. A needle threader comprising, a mag- 5 nifying glass, asuitable holder for the glass, and a member having tWo hinged portions, one adapted to detachably engage the holder and the other, to present a socket for a needle, said socket being adapted to lie in the focal plane of the magnifying glass When the tWo portions of said member are in alinement, said portionhavingthe socket being adapted to be folded against the holder.
MARTIN NIELSEN.
