LADDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a ladder constructed so as to be also used as a fire escape.

A primary object of the invention is to so construct the ladder that it may be folded in a very compact manner.

in object of the invention is the novel manner of constructing the bracket portion so that the visible portion of a window sill will not be marred.

Besides the above my invention is distinguished in the manner in which the ladder engages the under surface of the window sill and the connection between the ladder and the window sill by means of a hook.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be better understood from th following detailed description taken in conection with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1, is a side elevation of the ladder in use.

Fig. 3, is an enlarged view of a modification.

Figs. at and 5 are detail views of a further modification.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1, designates a plurality of sections pivotally connected together. One of the end sections 2 is pivotally connected to a bracket 3. This bracket. 3, consists of two side bars 4 and 5 connected together by a rod 6. Each side bar has one end formed into a hook 7, arranged to engage the under surface of one Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 18 191% Application filed October 27, 1916.

element of a window sill 8. The bill 9 of the hook is so arranged as to be capable of being driven into the window sill so as to accomplish a more secure engagement, but in light service this will not be necessary.

To further insure a positive engagement between the bracket and the window sill I have illustrated in Fig. 8, a hook 1O pivoted in an off center manner to the bar 5, so that the hook will also gravitate to a position to dispose the bill 11 under the window sill.

In Figs. 4 and 5 l have shown a catch 12 arranged to engage behind the hook when the latter is moved to a position to engage the window sill. From this latter arrangement it will be seen that the bracket is positively held against movement irrespective of vibratory motion to which the section 1, may be subjected.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that I provide a ladder which is admirably adapted for the purpose for whichit is intended and which is simple and durable of construction and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

What I claim is 2- A ladder comprising a series of step sections, a bracket having a connection with the step sections and including two parallel horizontally disposed bars each having one end formed into a hook extending in a horizontal direction toward the opposite end of the bar and a second hook pivoted to each bar for vertical movements in a direction toward and away from said first hook and a spring pressed catch for locking said last hook in a vertical extending position.
