ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING-BASE FOR PRINTING-PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rum F. CHnIsMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supporting-Bases for Printing-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supporting bases for electro type plates, and more particularly, has for its object the provision of a supporting base of the character described, which may be adjusted to accommodate platesvarying in size.
A primary object of .the invention is to provide'a novel device of the character described, easily manipulated, simple in con struction, efficient in operation, and strong and durable in use.
A further object of the invention, resides in the provision of a device, which is constructed from a plurality of units or sections and which, is adjustable, due to the construction and arrangement of the various units.
Astill further object of theinvention, resides in adjustable clamping members, which are so arranged as to be readily accessible to the user, and whereby the same may be adjusted into engagement with the plate to be held thereupon.
A still further object, resides in supplying the various units with recesses or pockets, adapted to receive retaining members so that a plurality of plates may be supported upon the base.
Another important characteristic of the invention, lies in the novel construction of the means for locking the supporting base in its adjusted position.
Among the advantages accruing from this construction, it may be mentioned that the device may be easily cleaned, due to the simple construction, that it occupies but little space,.due to the compact arrangement, also by the movable clamps arranged on the supporting base a hair line register is made possible, further, the device may be assembled by an apprentice and stillfurther, it may be lifted as though it were a Single piece, consequently enabling changes to b madequickly and easily.
- Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which, for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection' with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration, convenient and satisfactoryembodiments of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, it may be said for the purpose of convenience, that the various units or sections shall be referred to inde pendently of each other and shall then be further described when in assembled condition. 1 is a section adapted to constitute one of the ends of the device, when in assembled condition, the samebeing provided with a plurality of. arms, generally numbered 2, the sides of which are provided with a series of openings 3, the openings in the outer arm being counter-sunk so as. to read-' ily receive the locking means. Arranged upon one side of the sectionlis provided a stop portion 4, for the purpose of receiving one end of a plate to be supported thereby. 1 is a section having a head portion, which portion is provided with a plurality of arms generally numbered 2, which correspond in size and shape to the arms of the sections 1. 3 is a series of openings arranged in each of the arms and adapted. to register the openings in the arms of the section 1,
and -1- is a projection or stop, for the purpose of receiving one end of the plate being supported upon the base.
in Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated those sections, which constitute the remaining end of the supporting base, and. in this particular construction, I provide sections 5 and 5, the section 5 being provided with a plurality of arms 6 having arranged 1n the sldes thereof a series of recesses 7 8 is a slidable clamping member provided with notched portions 9 which are adapted to receive the guiding strips 10 arranged in the head of the section 5. 11 -isa screw having arranged in the head thereof, a plurality of channel ways'12'which are provided to receive means whereby the same may be turned. The screw 11 is passed through the clamping member and into a threaded recess arranged in the head portion, whereby, the clamp may be slidably adjusted. The correspondmg section 5, better illustrated in Fig. 6 is constructed identical with the section 5, with the exception, that the head portion 18 arranged upon theopposite end thereof. In

13 are sections, which act as fillers, the sections being provided with the usual head portion, having'formed' therein, apertures 13 for the purpose of allowing the passage of'the clainpingscrew 11 of the adjoining section therethrough, and having an arm 14 formed thereon, provided with a series of openings 15 adapted to register with. the openings in the sections heretofore described, for the purpose of admitting the passage of a' locking bar therethrough. a plurality of recesses 16 preferably threaded upon their interior, which construction is better illustrated in Fig. 11, and are adapted to receive screw threaded stops 17 formed with an elongated head 18.
. 19 is a section placed intermediate the two end sections and is provided with a plurality of arms 20 havingthe usual openings 21. Thehead portion of the section 19 is provided with a recessed end 22, having arranged therein the-guiding strips 23, for the purpose of receiving the clamping structure .8 and-11, and 2 1 is an opening interiorly threaded for receiving the screw 11. 19" is a corresponding section provided with arms 20 adapted to be received or to telescope with the arms 20 of the section 19. Each ofthe arms are provided with a series of openings 21 similar to those illustrated in the arms 21, and are so positioned as to register therewith, and the ends of the arms are provided with recessed portions 24 so asto allow for the passage or th'e'screw 11 therebetween. Formed upon one end of the head portion 19 is a projection orstop 25 for the purpose of receiving one side of the plate to be supported thereby. i 26 is a section, which servesas a filler, the same being provided with arms 27, thearms having arrangedtherein a series of recesses 28 The section is provided with acorresponding section 26 identical therewith in construction and adapted to telescope with the same. j
29 is a bar of a shape, conforming with the 100 openings, arranged in the sides of the arms and having a head portion 30, and adapted to be passed therethrough, in order that the various sections, may be held-together in an adjusted position. e -105 31 designates a tool having provided thereon end portions 32 which'are adapted to engage the channel ways or grooves 12 in the head of the screw 11 so that the same maybe turned.
Coming now to the assembling of the device and the operation thereof, the sections 1 and 1 with the arms 2 and 2 are adapted to telescope'with each other and to form. one
end ofthe supporting base. The sections 5 r is in its contracted position,'the various sections are extended until the proper or ap proximate width has been reached, the side openings 3, 3.,5, 5, 15, 21, 21" and 28 are registered and the locking bar 29 is passed therethrough so that the sections will be securely held in their adjusted position. The plate is then placed upon the base, and the movable screw actuated clamping members 8 are adjusted into engagement with the plate, so as to force the same against the various projections or stops arranged upon their corresponding sections, whereby, the plate may be securely fixed to the base. If it is desired to support a plurality of plates upon the base, and to so arrange the same as to allow for margins, the screw threaded stops 17 are inserted into the proper screw threaded recesses 16 and serve as abutments for the adjoining edges of the plates.
It is to be understood, that the filler sections 13 and 26 may be used at will by the operator andif necessary, the device may be used without the same. Further, I do not wish to limit the invention to the use of a specific number of intermediate clamping members but desire to have it known, that any number thereof may be used as conditions or preference may dictate.
Attention is directed to the fact that the clamping sections such as designated at 20, shown to advantage in Fig. 8, mayv be meshed or telescoped instead of using the complementary sections as 19 thus afiording a supporting base wherein the clamps can be used on one or both sides as conditions or preferences may dictate, and which forms one of the essential features of the present invention.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of the invention, together with the construction which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but it will be apparent to personsskilled in the art, that different arrangements of the parts from those herein shown and described, for producing the desired results, may be employed, together with mechanical equivalents of some of all of said parts.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. An extensible supporting base, including a plurality of telescoping sections certain ones thereof having fixed abutments, movable abutments arranged on others of the sections, all of said sections having a plurality of registerable openings arranged in the sides thereof, a locking bar adapted to pass through said openings, and filler sec tions having pin receiving openings in the upper surfaces thereof.
2. In an extensible supporting base, the combination with a telescoping section hav ing an angularly recessed head provided with a threaded counter bore, said head having a plurality of fingers, ribs formed in the annular recess, a slidable abutment having a wearing base and notches movable on the ribs, and an adjusting screw passing through the abutment into the threaded counter bore whereby the slidable abutment may be adjusted.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of clamping sections having end-wise slidable and interengageable fingers, a fixed stop on certain of the sections, an adjustable stop on the co acting ones of the sections, all of said interchangeable fingers having a series of openings adapted to aline, a connecting rod adapted to enter the alined openings to prevent end-wise disengagement of the fingers, end clamping sections having fixed and adjustable stops respectively, and mterchangeable filler members arranged to be located between therespective clamping members.
l. In a device of the character described, the combination of an end-Wise and laterally expansible base for 'electro-types, includlng opposed clamping members having a plurality of laterally slidable and lnter-engageable fingers, fixed and ad ustable stops on the respective clamping members for engaging the sides of the electro-type, fixed and adjustable stops on others of the clamping members for engaging the electro-type endwise, filler members arranged to be interposed between the respective clamping members said filled members having fingers the fingers of the filler members and the clamping members having openings, and a key rod adapted to be projected into the openings to prevent the lateral disengagement of the fingers.
