FLUSHlNG APPARATUS.
APPucATloN man APR. 14.1917.

E al; STA I FLUSHING APPARATUS,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
. Application led April 14, 1917. Serial No. 162,111.
*sinks, basins, and like receptacles, and has for one of its objects the provision of such an apparatus'by means of which the drainsof the receptacles may be freed from accumulations when they become clogged.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a flushing apparatus having a hollow plug for securement in the waste pipe or discharge opening of the receptacle, the plug being connected with a flexible pipe or tubing for attachment to a faucet.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a flushing apparatus, an arm pivotally and removably vconnected to the hollow plug an a closure for the overflow pipe, said clos re being slidably andremovably connected with the arm.
The invention also aims to generally iinprove flushing apparatus of this nature to render it more practical, useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view as will `become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists .in c ertain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through a bath tub showing myflushing apparatus mounted in operative position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the apparatus removed from the tub, and showing the connection between the arm and the hollow plug.
Referring in numerals, 1 designates as an entirety a bath tub of common construction having thewaste or drain pipe 2 which communicates at its upper end with the tub through the bottom thereof. An overflow pipe 3 connects at its lower end with the wastepipe 2 below the bottom of the tub and is in communicadetail to the'drawings 'byv tion at its upper end with the interior of the tub slightly below the top thereof. 4 designates a faucet and 5 the water supply pipe therefor. It often happens that the waste or drain pipe 2 becomes clogged with accumulations and extraneous matter of Various descriptions and it is for the purlpose of freeing this pipe, that I have provided my improved flushingapparatus.
The apparatus in its preferred construction comprises a hollow plug 6 having a central opening 7 in which is connected one end of a flexible pipe or tubing 8, the other end thereof being adapted for securement to the faucet 4 as shown. The flexible tubing may be permanently connected to the plug 6 but hasv a removable connection with the faucet 4, it being merely slipped over'the nozzle thereof when desired, and removed therefrom when not inuse.
An arm 9 in the form of a metallic rod bent at its upper end into a handle forming loop 10 is provided for removable and pivotal attachment to the plug 6. The connection is formed by extending the lower end of the arm at right anglesto the main portion thereof to provide a tongue 11 which may be slipped into the socket opening 12 formed by the socket or cross over plate 13. This plate has the substantially U shaped central portion 14 and the attaching flanges 154 which are secured by suitable fasteners 16 to the plug. The tongue ts rather loosely within the socket lso that it maybe rocked therein and tilted slightly with re spect to its longitudinal axis.
lA closure plug or disk 17 is provided`for the intake end of the overiow pipe 3 and this plug is connected centrally of its outer face to a rod or arm 18 bent at one end tov form an eye 19 through which the arm 9 extends. The arm 18 has asliding connection with the arm 9 and may be disconnected therefrom when itis desired to fold the i apparatus into very compact form.
In use, the plug 6 is inserted into the intake end of the drain pipe 2 and the flexible tubing 8 connected to the faucet 4. The arm 18 is then connected with the arm 19 and the latter connected with the plug. Now by pressing downwardly on the` arm 9 by means of the handle loop 10, the plugv6 may be held firmly in position and by swinging the arm 9 about its pivotal end toward the overow pipe, the overflow ings, it will be seen that I lclosure 17 may be clamped in operative position to prevent any Water which `may back up into the pipe from iovving into the tub.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying draW- have provided a very simple and practical flushing apparatus, which may be cheaply manufactured to sell at a relatively 10W price, which mayV be quickly assembled and applied to a tub or other receptacle to free the drain pipe of accumulations and which may be disassembled and arranged in compact form for storing or shipping.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it Will be clearlyunderstood that I do not Wish to be limited to this construction, but may make'such changes as will fall Within the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is 1. In a flushing apparatus, a plug, means for conducting water through said plug, an arm having a handle formed on one end and socket lcarried by said plug, an arm, a tongue formed on the lower end of said arm at right angles thereto, said tongue being adapted for rocking and tiltingmovements Within said socket, a second arm having an eye formed on one end through which the first mentioned arm extends, the second Inentioned arm being slidable on the first mentioned arm and removable therefrom and a closure on the second mentioned arm adapted to'be held by pressure from the first mentioned arm over the entrance to an overflow Pipe.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
WILLIAM GLEASON.
