the following is a" specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved threader, holder, and cutter for cotton thread, silk. and the like, and has for its primary object to provide a very simply constructed device which may be readily attached to or removed from the thread spool.
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose, constructed from a single plate of sheet metal, the parts of which are cut and folded to provide a needle guide and means for retaining a threading hook in relation thereto, means for attaching the device to a spool, a holding clip for the thread, and means for cutting the thread.
It is a further general object of my invention to improve and simplify the construction of devices of the above character and render the same highly efficient and serviceable in practical use.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction. combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved combination threader, holder, and cutter applied to a thread spool;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation illustrating the manner of threading the needle and showing the needle in dotted lines disengaged from the threading hook;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the device is formed.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the metal blank from which the device is formed, said blank being stamped or cut out of sheet metal to provide the elongated portion 6, a rectangular portion 7 clined .side edges 8. The plate is slit or cut inwardly for a short distance, as at 9, from the meeting point of these inclined edges 8 with the opposite edges of the rectangular portion .7. The purpose of such construction will be presently stated.
The elongated body portion 6 of the blank is also provided with the spaced tongues 10 projecting laterally from its opposite longitudinal edge, and a short finger 11 is formed upon the edge of one of the tongues 10 and projects at right angles thereto. A finger piece 12 is also formed upon the end edge of the body 6 between the finger or extension 11 and one of the inclined edges 8. The edge of the plate at the notch 13 formed by the juncture of the finger piece 12 with its inclined edge 8,,is sharpened to provide a cutting edge.
The opposite end of the body 6 is adapted to be turned over, as at 1 1, and clenched upon the shank of the threading hook 15. The plate 6 is also adapted to be folded upon itself along the dotted lines indicated at 16 and 17 respectively.
After the threading hook is secured in the end 14 of the plate 6, said plate is folded upon the dotted line 16 so as to position the hook shank exactly in line with the space between the adjacent edges of the tongues 10. The plate is then folded in the same direction along the dotted line 17. In this latter folding operation, the tongues 10 will be disposed with their side faces in opposed relation and the hook bill, indicated at 18, will be located contiguous to the side edges of said tongues and between the same. The finger or projection 11 is then bent over upon the edge of the other tongue 10 and its extremity outwardly curved'to provide a clamping clip for the thread. The finger piece 12 is now bent at right angles to the plane of the .body plate. Finally, the side portions of the rectangular part 7 of the plate are turned inwardly to provide an open, resilient sleeve 19, and the plate then bent at the juncture of the sleeve with the body to dispose the sleeve at right angles to said plate. The sleeve 19 is adapted for insertion into the end of the bore of the thread spool indicated at 20, so that the plate 5 will lie flat upon the end face of the spool with the ends of the tongues 10 projecting slightly beyond the periphery of the spool flange. In the insertion of the sleeve Within the spool bore, the end portions of the sleeve are compressed toward each other, and when released, they will exert an outward pressure against the spool. In this manner, it will be appreciated that the device will be securely, though detachably retained, in position upon the spool.
In the practical use of my invention, the needle indicated at N is inserted between the ends of the opposed tongues 10 and d awn laterally over the hook bill 18 until said hook bill is engaged through the eye of the needle. The thread shown at T is then also engaged under the hook bill between the same and the needle eye. After the requisite amount of thread has been drawn from the needle eye, the thread is engaged beneath the clip 11 and around the finger piece or extension 12 to the cutting edge 8. In order to cut or sever the thread,- it is drawn taut against the sharpened edge 13 of the plate, and the free end of the thread may then be readily grasped to withdraw additional thread from the spool, if desired. When the thread is not being used, the needle may be first threaded and impaled through the thread on the spool, the thread extending from the needle beneath the clamping clip 10 and being held taut thereby. 0
From the foregoing description, taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawing,
the construction, manner of operation, and several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. As the device is constructed from a single sheet metal plate, it will be appreciated that the same can be produced at very small manufacturing cost. The article may be constructed in any desired size, and while I have herein shown and described the preferred form and relative arrangement of its several parts, it is manifest that the same are susceptible of considerable modification and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a body plate having opposed tongues formed thereon constltutmg a needle guide, a needle threading hook fixed to said plate and disposed adj aoent to one edge of said tongues, the opposite edge of one of said tongues being provided with a thread holding clip, and an expansible sleeve on Copies of'this patent may be obtained for said plate for detachable engagement in the bore of a thread spool.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body'plate having opposed tongues formed thereon constituting a needle guide, a needle threading hook fixed to said plate and disposed adj acentto one edge of said tongues, the opposite edge of one of said tongues being provided with a thread thread, said plate at the juncture of the finger piece with said oblique edge thereof bemg sharpened, and an expanslble sleeve on said plate for detachable engagement in the bore of a thread spool.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a needle threader body consisting of a single sheet metal plate having an elongated portion, one end of said elongated-portion being adapted to be pinched upon the shank of a threading hook, spaced lugs extending laterally from the other end of said elongated portion, a rectangular portion connected by a tapering neck to the opposite longitudinal edge of said elongated portion, the plate being cut inwardly at the juncture of the rectangular portion with said neck, said plate being adapted to be folded upon itself to dispose said tongues in opposed re lation and position the threading hook in line withthe space between saidtongues at one edge thereof, the edges of said rectangular portion of the plate being adapted to be bent inwardly toward each other to provide an expansible sleeve for insertion into the bore of a thread spool, and a thread holding clip formed upon the edge of one of said tongues andadapted to be bent over upon the face of the other tongue.
4. A device of the character described comprising a body plate having opposed tongues formed thereon constituting a needle guide, a needle threading hook fixed to said plate and disposed adjacent to one end 'of said tongues, and an expansible sleeve integrally formed withthe plate and extending at right angles to the plane thereof, said plate being adapted for detachable engagement in the bore of a thread spool and thebody plate being engaged upon the end face. of the spool.
