METALLIC BARREL. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 21.1915.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. DARLEY, an, or BALTIMO E, MARYLAND, A'ssrenoa T0 ,THE'UNIVERSAL STEEL PACKAGE so, A CORPORATION or LAWARE.
METALLIC BARREL.
To all whom it mayconcem:
Be it known that 1, JOHN 1V. DARLEY, Jr., a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and usefullinprovements in Metallic Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to metallic barrels, and the object of my invention is to produce a metal barrel which shall be light, strong, of a bilged form andwhich shall be so constructed that the head can be readily removed where access to the'finterior is desired.
A further object of myinvention is. to provide a barrel which can be readily knocked down when the barrel is to' be re-shipped for reuse as acontainer.
This present application for United States Letters Patent'relates only to the construction of thehea'd and chine ring and means by which the head is secured to thestaves of the barrel.
Another application for United States Letters, Patent Serial No. 57,189 is filed herewith showing the construction of the staves and hoops.
In the drawings-- i Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved barrel;
Fig. 2, is a partial longitudinal section of the barrel along the line 2-2 as shown in Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of one stave of my improved barrel;
Fig. 4:, is a perspective view of the head of my improved barrel;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the chine ring for my improved barrel;
Fig. 6, is a top plan view of the juncture of two staves and it also shows the position of the head with reference to the staves when the head is first introduced within the staves; and
Fig. 7 shows the relation between the head and one stave after the head has been moved into the locking position.
In the drawings 10 represents a stave which may be corrugated or in any wise strengthened.
The staves are provided with ribs 17 and 18 along their edges and they may be secured together in any approved manner Specification of Letters Patent.
I and are to be retained in place by hoops such as 11l1. r
The staves are provided at the ends with portions such as 'l212, which when the staves are assembled together form a substantially cylindrical flange on the edge of the barrel.
Each portion 12 of each stave is provided with a U shaped flange 13 near the center thereof for a purpose hereinafter specified.
Each portion 12 is further provided with tabs 14k adjacent to the flange 13, and with side extensions 15 and 16. The side exten-,

22 and on both sides of each arm flat places-Q such as 22 are provided. A flat annulus 23 extends outwardly from the head 21 and is provided on its exterior with a flange 24c.
The flange 24 is slit at its upper portion so as to provide a plurality of portions such as 25 equal in number to the number of staves in the barrel. Between the portions 25 the portions 26 are bent inwardly for a purpose hereinafter described.
For the purpose of strengthening the chine of the barrel, I provide the chine ring 30, (shown in Fig. 5), which is substantially U shaped in cross section and is provided with a flange 27 forming an obtuse angle with the inner side thereof. The top of the chine ring is provided with a plurality of holes such as 31 equal in number to the number of staves in the barrel. One end of the strip of metal of which the chine ring is composed is provided with two tabs 2828, and the other end of said strip is provided with two holes 2929 for the reception of said tabs. The end of the strip provided with the holes 2929 is enlarged so as to the tabs 28-98 so that said tabs may be made to register with the holes 2-929. One of the tabs 28 is bent outwardly through the outside hole and the other tab is bent in wardly through the inside hole 29 andthen both tabs are bent backwardly shown in Fig. 1,) with reference to the inside tab, in order to lock the ends of the strip to gether.
The operation of assembling my improved barrel is as follows After the staves 10 have been assembled and bound in place by hoops 1111, the head shown in Fig. t is to be introduced within the approximate cylinder formed by the portions 12 on the ends of the staves, in such a manner that the portions of the flange 2t of the head will pass downwardly between the ends of two adjacent portions l3-13 on the staves. The portions 1313 are of such a circumferential length so as to allow approximately one-fourth of an inch space between the abutting ends of two adj acent portions 13-43 and the interdisposed portions of the head flange 2th. The head is then pushed downwardly until the annular portion thereof rests upon the ends of the ribs 17 and 18 on the staves. The head is then to be given a twist in order to bring the portions 25 on the head flange 2i under the flanges 13 on the ends of the staves thus locking the head with the staves. In order to prevent the flanges from bending outwardly and releasing the portions 25 when subjected to heavy stresses acting from the bent portions 26 from releasing the ends of the flanges 18, the inside of the U shaped chine ring is made of such dimensions that when driven down it will clamp the portions 26 against the flanges 18 and the latter against the portions 25 of the head flange 24, thus effectually securing the head in place and preventing any shifting of the head with reference to the staves under heavy stress.
In order to provide for the ready placing of the chine ring 30 in position, the beveled portion 97 is provided to press the portions 26 toward the flanges 13. When the chine ring is in position, the tabs 1% pass through the holes 31 and are bent over inwardly (as shown in Figs. 1 and 2) in order to retain the chine ring in place.
I claim 1. The combination with a plurality of staves each having flanges on a portion of the ends thereof, of a head provided with a flange having portions adapted to be passed under said flanges on said staves to lock said head and staves to ether, said flange on said head also having portions adapted to pass over the ends of the flanges on said staves.
2. The combination with a plu'ality of staves each having flanges on the ends thereof of a head having a flange resting under the flanges on saidstavcs, a chine ring substantially U shaped in cross section having holes in the top thereof and fitting over said staves and the flange on said head, and tabs on said staves passed through said holes and bent to retain said chine ring in place.
In testimony whereoflT aflix my signature.
JOHN TV. DARLEY, J .12.
