Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 3, 1914. Serial No. 854,744.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Felch, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable bed springs and its object is to construct a bed spring provided with means for taking up a longitudinal as well as a lateral sag in the spring, thereby prolongto its commercial value.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to'be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved bed spring. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front end view. Fig.- 4 is a rear end View. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts "throughout the several views.
The reference numerals 1, 1 designate the side rails of a bed stead upon one end. of
which brackets 2-, 2 are secured and upon the.
opposite end of which the brackets 3, 3 are secured. In the brackets 2, 2 a transverse rotary shaft 1 is journaled, one end 5 of which is square in cross section, upon which a ratchet wheel 6 is carried that is engaged by a pawl 7 carried by a bracket 2. A roller 8, 9, is fast upon shaft 4: and to the grooved portionof the same one end of the mattress Copies of this patent may be obtained to formed with a longitudinal groove 9 is secured which extends to and is socured to a two-piece shaft 10, 10 removably -&
secured upon bearings 11, 11 carried by the brackets 3, 3. A wire rod 12 also secured at one end'to the grooved portion of shaft l extends back almost to the end of the bed spring and in approximately the plane of the same and to said wire rod two pair of toggle bars 13, 1a are secured which are also connected by hinges 15 to the sides 16, 16
of the spring mattress which latter members are supported by shaft and bearings 17 I of brackets 3.
To adjust the bed spring and tension or stretch the same the shaft l is rotated by means of a crank applied to the end 5 thereof thus winding one end of the mattress upon the roller 8 and drawin the joint of the toggle bars toward the front or rollerend of the spring thus giving the mattress a longitudinal as well as a transverse tension. The movement of the toggle bars just described will, through their connection with the side rails 16, force the side rails away from each other upon their mountings.
What is claimed is An adjustable bed spring comprising in oon'ibination, a shafted roller, a stationary shaft, a wire fabric forming a mattress connecting said slr and. roller and adapted to be'wound upon the latter, a flexible meniber disposed in the plane of said mattress and connected to said shafted roller and toggle bars connecting said flexible member and the sides of said mattress.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
