WINDOW.
To all 'whomy 'it magi]v concern Be it known that we,l FRANK MESKR and JACOB BENQ, citizens of the United States e, and `useful Improvements in Windows, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
Our invention relates toa window, and
has for its object the production of av lireproof window structure which is so const ructed as to be free to expand in the presence of a-high degree of temperature. This feature is esirable for the reason that it allows the glass to expand freely, instead of breaking when subjected to a very high degree of heat.
' Our invention further includes several structural details to be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure I is an outside view of our improved window. Fig. II is an enlarged vertical section, partly broken awa taken on the line'II-II, Flg. I. Fig. I I is an enlarged horizontal section, partly broken away, taken approximately on the line lIII--III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a perspective view of a portion of the window, showing the jamb, sill, and a portion of the sasl?.-
Fig. Vais a vertical section taken approx mately on line V-V, Fig. IV. Fig. VI is a perspective view showing the interlock'between the lintel and the top sash rail. Fig. VII is a cross section showin a device for connecting the sash to the jam Fig. VIII is a view similar to Fig. VII modified form of the sash rail.
In the accompanying drawings, J designates the window jambs and L the lintel, these parts being preferably of channel shape 1n cross sectiong/ as seen in Figs. II and III. A sill S is secured to the lower ends of the jambs, thereby completing a rectan arwindow frame. Atv the lower end o each jamb are rivet stems 1, (Fig.
V), passing throufgh the sill, and upset,...
against the ttom ace of the latter.
The main sash frame comprises side ra1ls 2, arranged between the flanges of the jambs- J, atop rail 3 located between the anges of Specification of Letters Patent. Application led July 1, 1912. Serial No.I 706,931.
showing a Patented May 11,1915.
sill S. The to' rail 3 is free yto move verti-v cally in the lintel, and it is notchedat 5, (see Fig. VI), to receive avertical lug 6 on one of the flanges of the lintel, the object being to, interlock the sash with the lintel to prevent the sash from shifting laterally under ordinary conditions and permit it ,to expandvertically when the window is. subjected to a high degree of heat. The
- bottom rail 4 of the maln sash is connected to the sill S by means lwhich allow. the window to expand horizontally, said means comprising pins 7 (Fig. V2, riveted to-the bottom sash rail and extending through longitudinal slot 8 in the sill.
Distance pieces 9, (Fig. V), separate the bottom sash rail I from'l the si-ll'to provide a space through which water, particularly water of condensation, may flow Afrom/the inner face of the window to the outer edge of the sill.y The bottom sash rail 4 preferably has a down.- turned flange 10 at its outer edge, and the sill is preferably a Z bar having -a web,
an upstanding flange at the inner edge of said web, and a downturned flange at the outer edge of said web. It will be noted that the sill and bottom rail are so shaped as to produce an angularpassageway which allows water to drain to the exterior of the building. j
The main sash frame preferably includes horizontal Ty bars 11. The vertical sash bars 1,2form the sidewalls or jambs of a ventilator opening, the top and bottom walls of said opening being formed by horizontal bars 15 and 16, respectively. The'ventilator sash in the ventilator opening comprises kside rails 17 and top and bottom rails 18 and 19, said rails being connected by vertical and horizontal sash bars, as shown 111 Fig. I. `The ventilator sash is p1votallyconnected at 20 to the vertical bars 12. f The panes of glass are preferably secured to the flanged sash bars by small angle bars 30 attached to said iianged bars.
Fig. VII shows the jamb. J and side rail 2 connected 'by a screw 32 passing through. Van elongated hole in the side rail and screwed into the jamb. This connecting device, loosely `fitted to the `side rail '2, does 'not in any way interfere with the vertical and horizontal expansion of the sash.
The side rail 2 shown in Fig. VIII is in y the form of a channel having an integral flange 33 engaging one side of the glass and an angle bar 30 engaging the opposite side of the glass. 34 designates a bolt connecting the angle bar 30 to the channel.
We claim:
1. A window structure, comprising a lintel, jambs and a sill; and a sash interlocked with said lintel so as to allow the sash, to expand vertically, said sash being connected to said sill by means which allow the sash to expand horizontally.
2. A window structure comprising a lintel, jambs, and a sill; and a sash extending into said lintel and jambs, said lintel having a lug and the sash being provided with a notch for the reception of said lug whereby the sash is interlocked with the lintel to permit vertical expansion of the sash, and a slidable connection between said sash and sill allowing the sash to expand horizontally. 3. A window structure comprising a lintel,
jambs, and a sill; and a sash extending into L s'aid lintel and jambs, said lintel having a lug and the sash being provided with a notch for the reception of said lug whereby the sash is interlocked with the lintel to permit vertical expansion of, the sash, and means for connecting said sash to said sill, said means including a pin secured to one of said parts and slidably tted to the other part to permit horizontal expansionv of said sash. 1
