Description
J. H. BROWN.
GARMENT.
JOHN H. BROWN, 01: ONEIDA, NEW YORK.-
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
, Application filed November 16,1914. Serial No. 872,452.
T all 'lU/IOIIL it may concern lie it known that I, JOHN H. BaowN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain unprovements in garments and is applied more particularly to garments for children, such as rompers, etc.
Garments of this class are, as a rule, continuous throughout the front portion and are divided lengthwise across the back at or near the waist and are open for some distunce down opposite sides from the waistline to form a rear flap, which is usually of sullicient length so that in closed posltlon, it overlaps the waist portion of the garment at the rear. The u )per portion of the flap is provided with a band of sullicient lengti to extend around the garment and fasten in front, and is provided with suitable means, as button holes for engaging other means as buttons upon the waist portion of the garment to hold the flap in closed position.
In practice, it is found that the child inserts its hands in the slits upon opposite sides of the rear flap and the resultant strain soon tears the cloth and extends the slit downward along the side of the leg, thus destroying the garment long before the cloth is worn out, and )articu arly is this true when, as is usual, the seam is formed along the outside of the leg and the upper edges of the flap are left free by terminating the seams some distance from the edge of the llap, and with this construction, the thread or stitching is quickly broken down when subjected to the wear of children.
The primary object of my invention is to overcome these defects by forming the seam upon the inside rather than the outside of the leg, and forming a slit of the desired length and at the desired position in each leg and reinforcing the edge of the material bordering the slit in such manner that the same cannot be broken down in use.
Other objects and applications will appear from the following description taken m connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garment. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the side of the garment showing one of the slits or openings between the rear flap and the body of the garment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of this slit or opening showing the formation and manner of attachment of the reinforcing means. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line H, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a face view of the reinforcing strip.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated a garment 1- substantially continuous throughout its front portion (such portion being formed of two pieces -2 and 3 united along a longitudinal seam 4-). The garment is divided across the back to form a rear flap 5- having its edges separated from the body of the garment at the sides by slits or openings 6.
The upper free ed e of the flap 5 is reinforce and provi ed with a band 7 connected thereto by a double row of stitching, and of suflicient length to extend around the garment and button or be otherwise attached in front, as indicated at -8.
Each leg portion is formed continuous with its respective front portion -2- or 3 of the garment, which portions are united by the seam 4 and the seam in the leg 1s formed along the inner portion 9-, the outer side being continuous and integral, and the openings or slits -6- are formed by cutting or any other suitable means.
The edge of the body of the garment -1- and the adjacent edge of the rear flap 5- are reinforced and connected by a suitable strip of material 10 of the shape best shown in Fig. 5, which strip has a V-shaped recess -1'1-- at one end and is folded longitudinally along a medial line. The longitudinal edges of this strip 10 are then placed upon opposite sides of the body 1 and the flap 5- bordering the opening and are stitched in this position, the diagonally disposed end 12 stitched to the back ortion -13 of the arment and merging into the seam -16- between the back portion --13 and the respective front portions -2 or -3. The other end 14-- is turned so as to lie fiat upon the inner side of the He 5 and is stitched to the flap and to the and 7, in the same operation as the stitching of the flap and band together, and a suitable button-hole -15 extends through the reinforcing member 10 and the rear flap 5- and the band 7, and the usual stitching around the button-hole forms an additional attachment between the portions.
When the rear flap is closed the reinforcits ends being stitched to-the waist portions -13- and -2 and to the flap 5- and band 7, respectively, its central portion lies in the form of a loop around the edge of the opening or slit -6- and prevents tearing of the garment to extend the slit.
It is apparent that my invention is applicable to many and various forms of garments, and althou h I have shown and described one particu ar form and manner of attachment as illustrative of my invention, it should be understood that many changes may be made in the details of arrangement, form and attachment without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the ap mnded claims.
\Vhat l claim is:
1. A garment divided across the back and havin slits at opposite sides of the division extent ing downwardly to form a rear flap, a band secured to the upper edge of said flap and adapted to extend around the garment,
Cople: of this patent may be obtalned'tor five cents mg member -10- extends inwardly and.
a reinforcing piece having its edges secured to the edge of the flap and the body portion of the garment bordering the slit, and one end secured to said band.
2. A garment having a rear flap with its opposite edges separated from the body of the garment to form slits, a piece of fabric U- hape in cross section and having a V- shape end for reinforcing the edge of the garment bordering the slit.
3. A garment having a rear flap with its opposite edges separated from the body of the garment by slits and a reinforcing piece U-shape in cross section having its edges disposed upon 0 posite sides of the edge of the rear flap an the edge of the body portion of the garment bordering the slit, said edges secured to each other by means ex tending through the portion of the garment lying between them.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of November, 1914.
JOHN H. BROWN.
