To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Razor-Honing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in razor honing machines, one object of the invention, being the provision of a machine whereby a razor of the ordinary type, will be first presented to a rotary honing member at one side, during a complete backward and forward movement and then presented to another honing member in a similar manner at the other side, this action alternating automatically so as to properly hone both sides of the edge of the razor to produce the desired sharpened edge.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a honing machine in which the razor holder has imparted thereto a reciprocating movement, there being provided an automatic switching device disposed in the path of and in cotiperable relation to the razor holder for presenting it alternately to rotary honing members so that the complete blade is acted upon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction. hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 3fis a top plan view of the table of the honing machine showing the relative positions of two rotatory honing members. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view of the razor clamp and the adjacent parts of the honing machine. Fig. 5 is a front elevation thereof. Figs. 6 and 7 are enlarged detail views of the guide and switch used for automatically changing the paths of movement of the razor carrying member so that the razor is presented first to one honing member and then to the other.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the supporting structure or frame for the present machine, which is proin the respective shafts 5, each shaft being provided with a rotatory honing member of disk 6, and with the pulley 7. Each of the respective honing disks is provided with a bevel edge a which constitutes the razor engaging portion thereof. Journaled within the frame below the table 2 and operated in any desired manner, is the main shaft 8, which has fixed upon both ends thereof, the large pulley wheels 9 over which are trained the respective belts 10, the said belts being operably connected to the pulleys 7, so that the honing disks 6 will be rotated simultaneously from the main shaft 8.
Fixed upon the shaft 8 within the frame is a small pinion 11 which is in mesh at all times with a large pinion 12, said pinion 12 being mounted upon the shaft 13 which is journaled in the auxiliary frame 14. The link 15 is pivoted to the face of the gear 12 at the opposite side to the auxiliary frame 14 so that the same as the gear 12 is rotated, will have an oscillatory movement imparted thereto. The under side of the link 15 is provided with a recess or notch 16 which-is adapted to be placed to embrace or release the pin 17 connected to and carried by the long arm or lever 18 whose lower end is connected to the shaft 19 journaled in the frame. By this means as the gear 12 is rotated, the long arm or lever 18 through the link 15"and the notch 16 and pin 17,has a reciprocating movement imparted thereto to and from the front of the machine, the upper end of the arm 18 being connected to the casting 20 which in turn as will presently appear, carries the clamped razor R so that the same is presented to the respective honing disks 6.
The casting 20 is provided with the two upstanding. apertured lugs 21 and 21 which have mounted therein, the bolt 22, upon which is swingingly mounted the sleeve 23 and the razor clamp carrying frame 24. This frame 24 is provided with a cross bar 25 which has adjustably attached thereto for vertical adjustment. the plate 26, this plate being provided with the elongated slot 27 for the reception of the attaching screws 29 carried by the adjustable plate 28. Disposed within the cross bar 25 is a screw 30 the plate 28 has beenadjusted tothe proper height.
Carried upon the upper edge of the plate 28 are the two razor clamping members 30 which are adapted to coeperate with the clamping members '31 carried by'the leaf 32 which is hinged at 33, the screw 35 and milled nut 34 being provided to operate the hinged member 32 so that the clamping members 31 will coeperat'e with the clamping members 30 and thus hold the razor R in the positions as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
In order to provide a means for changing the position of the razor R,'so that it will be presented alternately to the respective honing disks 6, the terminals of the two members 36 and 37 are mounted for swinging movement upon the bolt 22 so that the long terminal 38 thereof may be properly guided as will presently appear. The rod 40 passes through the apertured lug 39 of the rod 38 and as will presently appear, imparts the desired movement to the respective clamping members. This rod 40 is con nected to the main clamping members, by means of the spring 41 and clamping nut 42, and the spring 43 and the adjusting nut 44, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5, and is'thus resiliently'connected to the razor carrying and clamping members so that no undue strain will. be placed upon the razor as "it is pushed into engagement with either one of thehoning' disks 6. At the same time, the springs 41 and 43 are of suflicient strength to insure the proper coaction or consonant movement between the rod 38 and the razor carrying and clamping member.
In order to automaticallyimpart the desired movement so that the razor will be presented to the respective blocks alternately and one at a time, a pin 45' is provided'at theupper end of the'rod, 38 and hasjournal'ed thereupon the roller'46 which is adapted'as the rod or arm 38 is reciprocated, to ride back and forth in the respective guiding grooves 48 and 49 of the guiding block 47, said guiding block 47 being adjustably attached to the under side of the table 2. The guides 48 and 49 both termi= nate in the switching or guide'portion 50, and the pivoted switching member 51 is carried by the pin 52 which is disposed through the block or guiding member 47 and isnormally held against accidental displacement by means of the spring 53.
In order to provide a means for automatically shifting the switching member 51 so that the arm 18 and the razor carrying and clamping'member are permitted one full reciprocation, or'one backward and forward movement, at each presentation .to one honing disk 6, the switch actuating member 52. is pivoted by means of the pin 53 to the "under side of the block 47, the same being provided with the two terminals 54 and 55 and with the centrally disposed arrow member 56 whose forward end is reduced and is adapted to be engaged by the roller 46 as the roller 46 in the groove 49 is moved from left to right in Fig. 6. Thus the switching member 51 engages and moves the member 52' from the central full line position asshown in'Fig. 6 to a position opposite to that illustrated by the dotted lines i'n'Fig. 6. By means of the two springs. 57, the member 56 is maintained in the central position, which is the normal position when the roller 46 18 in either one of the grooves 48 or 49.
Thus assummg that the switching member 51 isin the position as shown in full lines in Fig. 6, and that the roller 46 is in the groove 48 adjacent the switching member '51, the action of the machine would move the roller 46 to the right at which time the roller would engage the member 56 of the switch actuating member 52 and consequently moves the same to dotted line position therein shown, causing the arm 55 of'the switch actuating member 52" to en-" gage the switching member 51 and move it to thedotted line position as shown in Fig.

The roller 46 when performing this ac-' tion will move into the guide 50, and whenv moved in the opposite directiondue to the switching member 51 assuming the dotted line position will be guided into thegro'ove 49, thereupon moving to the left the full distance and reversing to the right; As the springs 57 return the switch actuating momber 52 to the full line position, the said member 52" will be operated ina reverse direction, so that the arm 54 willengag'e the switching member 51 and move it, so a, that when the roller 46'is moved in an 'out-* ward direction or to the left, it will be guided into the groove 48. imparting movement to the rod 18, and consequently reciprocating the razor carrying and clamping member, the lever 58 is pivoted to the casting 20 at the front end thereof so that the handle 59 is presented in ready access to the operator, and the two moved astride of the razor clamping and carrying member and as the lever 58 is provided with the pin 61, the same will engage arms 60 carried by the member 58 being the under side of the lever 62, to elevate the free end. As the free end of the lever 62 is elevated, the link 15 through the rod 63 is also elevated and thus the member 18 may be pulled outwardly and the razor which has been honed may be removed and another one substituted. An arm 64 is carried by the lug 21 for disposition in the path of the lug 65 of the lever 62 and prevents the link 15 being placed in operable connection to the rod 18 should the lever 58 have become disengaged from the lever 62 and before the lever 58 has been lowered. Attached to the plate or table 2 adjacent the recess 3'atthe forward edge thereof is the guiding plate 66 which assists the operator in guiding the presenting mechanism and adjust ing the same so that the edge of the razor will be properly presented to the honing disk 6.
What is claimed is:
1. A razor honing machine, including a support, a pair of rotatory honing members, a reciprocable razor carrying member, a clamp carried by the, latter member, an arm resiliently connected to the razor carrying member, an adjustable block mounted in the support and provided with two guides for receiving the upper end of the arm, and automatic means disposed in the path of the arm for alternately guiding the same from one guide to the other and for alternately changing the position of the razor carrying member relatively to the honing members.
2. A razor honing machine including a support, a pair of rotatory honing members, a reciprocable razor carrying member, an arm attached thereto and projecting from one side thereof, a block mounted in the support and provided with a Y-shaped groove for the reception of the upper end of the arm, a switch pivoted at the junction of the terminals of the Y shaped groove, and means for operating the switch disposed in the path of the upper end of the arm, whereby as the razor carrying arm is reciprocated, the arm is alternately moved toward each honing member.
