lVith this object in view Our invention is embodied in preferable form in the machine hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the rigid supporting base of the machine and 2 an upright standard extending therefrom. A treadle lever 3 is pivoted at the upper end of this base and connected to the rear arm thereof is a return spring 4. To the rear end of this lever is pivoted the lower end of a rod 5, the upper end or" which is connected to a rocking beam 6 which is centrally pivoted in the upright 2. The forward end of this rocking beam is pivoted to a vertically sliding frame 7 which is adapted to slide through and is guided by brackets 8 and 9 which are rigidly clamped on the upright 2. This sliding frame is provided at its lower end with a fixed plunger or ram 10, the lower edge of which is curved in order to adapt it to receive a spiral spring 11 which is to be applied to the hinge. One longi-J tudinal edge 12 of this plunger is prolonged into a lip projecting'beyond the opposite edge which lip serves as a stop to limit the downward movement of the plunger by contact of said lip with one of the hinge members 13. The plunger constitutes means for forcing the spring into its proper position on the hinge members and imparting a tension to the spring while so positioning it. This plunger extends between and is movable relatively to jaws 14 and 15 which are hung upon bolts 16, 16 extending longitudinally through a head 17. This head is hung on vertical rods 18 which project upwardly through openings formed in the clamp member 9. The upper end of each rod is provided with an adjustable nut 19 which is adapted to bear upon the upper end of a spiral cushion and return spring 20. This return spring surrounds a hollow sleeve 21 through which the rod passes and which sleeve is iXed in the clamp member 9 so that when the j aw-carrying head 17 moves downwardly the nuts on the ends of the rods 18 will bear against the springs, compressing said springs and permitting the downward movement of the head to continue until the nuts strike against the upper ends of the iXed sleeves 21, whereupon the descending movement of the jaws will be stopped, while the plunger will continue to move downward relatively thereto.
The jaws 14 and 15 are provided on their lower edges with opposite, longitudinal, inwardly projecting horizontal ledges 23 and 24 respectively. The ledge 28 of the j aw 14 is shorter than that of the opposite jaw for the purpose ot permitting the jaw 14 to take over upon a projecting portion of the particular kind of hinge which is illustrated in lthe drawing as one form of a spring hinge,
although it is, of course, obvious that the machine may be used with hinge members of other :Ecrins and is not confined to a jaw having the cut-out portion to accommodate the same to the particular hinge member illustrated. rThe jaws 14 and 15 are provided at opposite ends with inwardly projecting vertical retaining plates 25 against which the opposite ends of the spiral spring of the hinge member are adapted to abut and whereby these ends are retained in place in `the jaws until the spring has been dis- E,charged upon the hinge. Bolted to the exterior faces of the jaws are upwardly extending guide arms 26 and 27, the arm 26 being pivoted at its upper end toa bar 28 which vextends transverse-ly through a slot 29 formed in the frame 7. The other arm 27 is provided with a sl'ot30 whichy engages the bar 28 so as to permit a sliding movement of the arm thereon. Y
The spiral spring of thehinge member is placed within the jaws when thevlatter are in their raised position and the ends thereof rest upon the ledges 23 and 24. As theV frame 7 is forced downwardly the jaws 14 and 15 will be stopped in their downward movement by the abutment lof the nuts 19 against the upper ends of the sleeves and the plunger will continue downwardly exerting a pressure against the spring which will force the jaws laterally apart. In order to guide the free ends of the hinge spring within the upwardly projecting end flanges or earsf31 of the hinge members, the jaw 14 is adapted to be'given a sliding movement parallel to the axis of the vspring in order to pull the end of the spring inwardly so that it may clear the said ears. This movement is effected by a plate 32 carried by the bolt 16 on which the jaw is mounted and having an inclined cam slot 33 which engages with a pin or set screw 34 fixed to the clamp member 9, whereby as the aws are carried downwardly, the jawV 14 will be given a slight inward movement parallel to the axis of the spring, such as will carry its" end plate against the spring and thus pull the end of the spring within the inner edge lof theears of the hinge.
The hinge members 13 are adapted to be placed upon `an anvil 35 in position to re-V ceive the spring and a rivet which passes through the'spring and through the usual ears of the hinge members and which serves Y to connect said members and to constitute the pivot thereof. The hinge members are f held in correct position on this anvil with A the apertures in their ears held in register by means of guide plates 36 and 37, fixed on the upper face of the anvil. After the spring has been seated on the hinge members the rivet 38 is passed through the openings -inV the ears of the -hinge members and through the spring and then the inner end of this rivet is upsetby the operation of manually controlled mechanism. This mechanism consists of a vertically slidable backing plate 39 which is movable in guides in the base 1 and which is adapted to be moved upward beyond the head of the rivet in order to form a backing therefor against which pressure may be exerted when the opposite end of the rivet is to be upset. The

To this endthe shaft 44 has fixed thereto a forked mem-ber 47 of a toggle to which is pivoted the other member 48 of the toggle, the inner-'end .of this member being forked and adapted to pivotally Y engage a collar 49 keyed on a sliding and rotatable shaft .50 whichv rotates withinthe collar. This shaft is movable longitudinally through bearing members 51 mounted on the base of the machine and carries at its outer end grooved upsetting rollers 52 and 53 with axes at right angles which are end 'of the rivet in a manner wellknown in devices of this` character. Keyed on the sliding shaft 50 is a driven pulley 54 which is adapted to be driven by a belt 55 which may be connected to any suitable vsource of power.
The operation of the machine is as follows :--The parts v'being in the ,positionv shown inFigs. 1, 2 and 5, the spring 11 of the hinge is inserted in place on the jaws .14 and 15, with the spirals of the spring .bearing against the curved under face of the plunger 10 andrwith the free ends of the spring resting on the opposite ledges 23 and 24 of the jaws. In this position of the spring the latter-will be relaxed and consequently the end portions will extend downwardly, crossing vone another as indicated in .Fig 5. The hinge-members 13 are placed on the anvil 35 and held in correctly alined position by means of the guide plates36 and 37, the rivet openingsthrough -theears 31 of the hinge members being in registry. The
operator then depresses the footY treadle 3 whichl lifts the rod 5 and this action carries downwardly the frame 7 thus forcing down the plunger and the jaws. lVhenthe nuts 19 on the ends of the rods 18 fixed to the jaw head 17 come in contact with the upper ends of the sleeves21, the downward motion ofA the jaws 14 and y15 will be arrested but the of the spiral spring. This pressure will be adapted to bear against and upset the inner plunger will continue its downwardmove- 1 vment thusexerting a pressure upon the coilsV transmitted through the free ends of the spring to the pivotally hung jaws thus gradually forcing them apart and spreading out the ends of the spring so thattheir direction approaches a horizontal line and imposing a tension upon the spring. As this movement is continued the jaws will be forced so far apart that they will release the ends of the spring. rlllhis action takes place just as the jaws and the spring reach the hinge members as indicated in Fig. 6. its the jaws are released, from the hinge spring ll, they will be retracted by their return springs .Q0 to their normal upper position. rlhe plunger meanwhile will continue its downward movement and will force the ends of the spring down upon the opposite members of the hinge, thus placing the spring on the iinge under tension. ln this downward movement of the jaws and plunger, the end plate of the jaw 14 will carry said jaw laterally so as to force the outer end of the hinge spring within the outer ears of the hinge members.
The machine above described enables the parts of a spring hinge member to be readily positioned and the spring to be subjected to tension, and spring and rivet to be applied with facility and rapidity.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
l. ln amachine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for supporting hinge members, movable means for forcing said hinge members and spring together and so that the eye of the spring will register with the perforations in the ears of the hingel and mechanism for operating said movable means, substantially as described.
2, In a machine for assembling spring hinge. parts, means for supporting hinge members, means for supporting a spring, means for moving said supporting means relatively toward one another and means for simultaneously forcing said spring from its supporting means against the hinge menibers with the spring eye in registry with the hinge pivot perforations and imparting tension to said spring, substantially as described.
3. ln a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for supporting hinge members, means for carrying a hinge spring, means for spreading the ends of the spring and means for moving said spring carrying means tow "d the hinge support, d means for forcing said spring from its carrying means against the hinge members and into a position in which the eye the spring and the perforations in the ears of the hinge are in alinement, substantially as described.
4. ln a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for supporting hinge members, movable opposite yielding members adapted to receive and support the free ends of a spring, a member movable relatively to the spring supporting members, andoperable to exert pressure in said spring to spread the spring ends and also the supporting member apart, and to carry said spring against said hinge members and the eye of the spring into registry with the perforations in the ears of said members, substantially as described.
5. ln a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for supporting hinge members, a hinge-spring carrier movable toward and from said supporting means and cooperating to operatively position the spring on said hinge members, opposed swinging aws on said carrier adapted to receive respectively the opposite free ends of the spring, a plunger mounted on said carrier between said jaws and movable relatively thereto, said plunger having means to engage a spring and force it against the hinge members, means to limit the movement of said jaws relatively to the carrier, and means for operating said carrier, substantially as described.
6. In a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for supporting hinge members, opposite pivoted members for receiving and supporting the respective ends of a spring, a carrier movable toward and from said supporting means and on which said pivoted members are mounted, coperating with said supporting means for bringing the spring and hinge members together in operative relation, means iiXed to the carrier for engaging said spring and movable beyond the limit of movement of pivoted members to carry the spring therefrom and force it into operative position on the hinge members and means to automatically return :said pivoted members to normal position independently of the carrier, substantially as described. 1 f7 7. In -a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, vmeans for supporting hinge members, a hinge-spring carrier movable toward and from said means to position the spring operatively on said hinge members, swinging jaws mountedV on said carrier and movable therewith and also having a limited movement in the same line independently of said carrier, a plungermounted on said carrier between said jaws, means for forcing saidl carrier toward the hinge support to de-V posit tlie spring on the hinge and means for automatically moving the jaws away from said support independently of the plunger, substantially sis-described.

In a machine-for assembling spring hinge parts, a support for the hinge members,avertically movable hinge spring carrier above said support adapted to carry the spring and hinge members into operative relation, oppositely swinging jaws mounted on horizontal pivots on said carrier, said jaws having means to retain said spring and to respectively engage the opposite free yends kof the spring, a plunger on said carrier hav- 1 ing movements with and relative to the jaws and operable to press on the spring to force the same fromy the aws and against the hinge members, means for moving said carriei' toward the supporting means and means for automatically raising and closing the jaws independently of the carrier, when the spring is released from said jaws, substantially as described. f
9. In a machine for assembling spring from against the hinge members between the rivet ears thereof and means for moving an end ofthe spring longitudinally of the' spring aXis to clear said ears Vas the spring is positioned on the hinge, substantially as described.
Copies of this patent may be obtained lfor hingespring retaining jaw, having a horizontal longitudinal ledge at its lowery edge and having a flange attheV end of said ledge 1 at right angles to the latter, means for moving the jaw toward the support to position the spring on the hinge members in operative relation thereto, and means for moving said jaw at right angles 4to said first move-V ment to carry said flange against the spring, substantially as described.

In a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, means for forcing the hinge members and spring together into operative relation with the eye of the spring in registry with the perfor-ations in the ears of the members, a rivet upsetting means movable toward and from the hingemembers in a line at an angle to the line of movement of said forcing means, substantiallyv as described.
14. In a machine for assembling spring hinge parts, a fixed anvil, means on said l anvil to engage hinge members to hold them in registry, a helical spring carrier movable toward said anvil for positioning the spring on the hinge members in operative relation thereto,l means for spreading. the ends of said spring, means for operating said carrier, a rivet upsetting mechanism movable toward and from said anvil at right angles to the movement of the carrier and means for driving said mechanism, substantially as described.
