In the patented structure, there 18 provided a latch-bar to which is connected a panel, the arrangement being such that when pressure is exerted against the panel the latch-bar will be moved to release posivided for yieldably holding the latch-bar there is provided a key-actuated lock mechanism, and means, independent of the lock mechanism for holding the latch-bar yieldably against movement to release positlon.
In the present invention, the means pro vided for yieldably holding the latch-bar in position to lock the door, constitutes an element of the means provided for moving the latch-bar to release position and the structure is by reason of this combination of the two means rendered less complicated and not as liable to get out of order.
In the patented structure, the panel is flexible, whereas in the present invention means is provided whereby a solid panel may be employed and the same results attained.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in'
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an emergency exit door fastener embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 1s a horlzontal sectional view in detail through the lock structure. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the said lock structure, the casing being removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the exit illustrating the manner of supporting the panel. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the actuating member of the 1 lock. Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating a slight modification of the invention. Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectlonal' view through the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of mounting the latchbar for rocking movement. Fig. 9 is a group perspective view illustrating the latch-bar and the companion-bar therefor. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, a solid panel is employed, and in the form shown in the other figures of the drawings, a flexible panelfis employed. The lock structure, however, is adapted for use with either form of the panel, as will hereafter be made apparent.
V In the drawings, the door proper is indicated-by the numeral 1 and in itself is of the ordinary construction and is mounted to swing in a door frame 2, the hinges supporting the door being indicated at 3. Brackets 4: are secured upon the inner face of the door 1 and one of these brackets is located near the upper edge of the door and the other near the lower edge thereof, the brackets being in vertical alinement and being both'located adjacent the hinged side of the door. The solid panel which is supported upon the inner face of the door, in a manner which will now be explained, is indicated by the numeral 5, and secured to the face of the panel near one lateral edge thereof are brackets 6 which, as in the case of the brackets 4 are arranged in vertical alinement and one near the upper edge of the panel and the other near the lower edge thereof. A link 7 is pivoted at one end to each of the brackets 4 and at its other end is pivoted to the corresponding bracket 6, the links extending from the bracket 4: at an angle to the face of the door and toward the said hinged side thereof. Brackets 8 are secured to the inner face of the door 1 at the free side thereof and near the upper and lower edges of the door, these brackets being located opposite the corresponding brackets 4. Brackets 9 corresponding to the brackets 6 are secured upon the face of the panel 5 and the arrangement of the brackets 9 is similar to the arrangement of the brackets 8, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. l of the drawings. A rod 10 is mounted at its upper and lower ends in the brackets 8 for rotative movement and fixed to the upper and lower ends of this rod are links 11, these links being pivoted as at 12 to the corresponding brackets 9. At this point it will be apparent that the panel 5 is supported for movement toward and away from the door 1 and it will further be noted that i i if:
I The lock device includes a casing the back or base-plate of which is indicated by i the numeral 13. The front of "the casing is indicated at 14 and includes an end-wall 15 and top and bottom walls, both indicated .by the numeral 16. Atitsopposite end, the front'of the casing'is notched as at 17 and the back-plate 3 has a forwardly extending portion 18 which is notched as indicated at 19. The notches17 and 18 register, when the front and back ofthe casing are assembled, to form a slot, the purpose of which will be presently made apparent. Both the front and back of the casing are provided at the last mentioned end thereof with matching ear portions 20 which, in mounting the lock, are fitted about the rod 10. The front and back sections of the casing are secured together in assembled relation by means of a screw 21 fitting through the front 14 and threaded into an opening in the back 13. . 1 and 2 of the drawings it will be observed that the back 13 is secured to the inner face of the door '1 an'd'is located behind the panel 5 Arranged within the casing of the lock is a latch retracting member which includes a head 22 having a cam surface 23, the head being provided with an axially projecting stud 24 fitting in an opening 25 in the front 14 of the casing and being provided at its opposite side with a stem 26 which extends through an'opening 27 in the back 13 of the casing and through an opening 28in the door '1 and'into'the casing 29 of a lock of any ordinary construction. This stem 26 serves as a connector between the head 22 and the mechanism of the lock 29 so that when the proper key is inserted into the lock 29 and turned the stem will be rotated,
} whereby to, impart rotative movement to the head 22 in one direction or the other.

26 'and b'ears at one end against the head 22 and at its other end against the back 13 of the lock casing and serves to hold the head 22 against the inner sidesof the front 14 of the said casing. It will be observed from inspection of Fig.2 of the drawing that the head 22 is located between the screw 21 and .the slotted end of the casing and in order that the rotative movement of the head'22 may be limited, when the head is rotated in either direction, a pin 31 is provided upon the periphery of the head and is arranged to engage against the screw 21. The latchmember which serves to hold the door in locked position and which may be retracted by rotating the head 22, includes a collar 32 secured by a set-screw 33 upon the rod 10 and projecting from the collar is a latch-arm 34 having a head 35 formed to engage with a keeper 36 secured upon the side of the door frame 2. It will be observed from inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the latch-arm 34 extends through a slot 37 cut in the edge of the panel 5 and projects beyond the face of the said panel. An arm 38 also projects from the collar 32 in a direction substantially at right angles to the arm 34 and extends through the slot 19 in the end of the locking device and has its end resting against the cam face 23 of the head 22. In order to hold the end of the arm 38 in such engagement with the said face of the head 22, the arm is formed at its end with vertically projecting pins 39 against which bear the ends of leaf-springs 40 secured as at 41 upon the inner face of the back 13 of the casing.
From the foregoing description of this form of the invention it Will be seen that the panel 5 is supported for movement toward and away from the face of the door 1 and that when pressure is exerted against the panel it will be moved toward the said door and upon such movement the links 11 will be so swung as to rock the rod 10 to the right in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby swinging the latch-arm 34 away from the keeper 36, 100 such movement being of course, against the tension of the springs 40. It will also be ap parent that the springs 40 bearing against the pins 39 at the end of the arm 38 serve to normally yieldably hold the rod 10 rocked 05 in such manner as to hold the panel 5 away from the door.
It will now be seen, that in the event of a panic, the first person reaching the door and pressing against the panel 5 will release 0 the locking means thereby allowing the door to-swing freely to open position.
Should it be desired to open the door from without, a proper key is inserted in the lock 29 and turned so as to rotate the stem 26 115 and head 22. Upon rotation of the head the cam .face 23 thereof will ride beneath the end of the arm 38, thereby swinging the arm in such manner as to move the arm 34 away from the keeper 36. The door may then be 12 opened in the ordinary manner. When it is desired to again lock the door from the outside, the key is inserted and turned in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, as before stated, a flexible panel is employed, this panel being indicated by the numeral 42 and being of any suitable material, such for example as heavy cloth or wire fabric. The panel is rigidly supported at one side by a supporting bar 43 mounted upon the face of the door 1 by suitable brackets 44. Brackets 45 are also secured to the face of the door 1 and rotatably mounted at its ends in the brackets 45 is a rod 46 which corresponds to the rod 10, previously described. Arms 47 a are secured upon the rod 46 at the upper and lower ends thereof and these arms support a bar 48 to which the other lateral edge portion of the panel 42 is secured.
The brackets 45 are formed each with a shoulder 49 coiiperating with a shoulder 50 provided upon each arm 47, it being understood that the co-operative engagement of the shoulders serves to limit the swinging movement of the same arms 47. It will now be apparent that should pressure be exerted from the flexible panel 42 the same will be sagged, thereby rocking the arms 47 and imparting rocking movement to the rod 46 in a direction to disengage the latch head, which in this instance is indicated by the numeral 51 upon the keeper, indicated in Fig. 7 by the numeral 52. To avoid pressing against the panel 42 each time the door is opened from within, a handle 53 is secured to the bar 48 and may be grasped for the purpose of swinging this bar to disengage the latch 51 from the keeper 52.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the lock structure may be employed in connection with a solid panel or a flexible panel, as desired, and that it will serve effectually to hold the door in closed position until pressure is exerted against the panel or until actuated by the use of a proper key.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a door, of a panel supported in spaced relation to the door and bodily movable toward the same, a rocking rod arranged for actuation upon movement of the panel toward the door, a latch-arm extending from the rod, an arm extending from the rod, a spring bearing against the last mentioned arm and yieldably holding the same in one direction, a rotatable head having a cam face against which the end of the last mentioned arm rests and means for rotating the head.
2. The combination with a door, of a panel supported in spaced relation to the door and bodily movable toward the same, supporting means for the panel including a rod arranged for actuation upon movement of the panel toward the door, a latcharm extended from the rod and movable therewith, a second arm extending from the rod and also movable therewith, a rotatable head having a cam surface engaged by the last mentioned arm, means for limiting the rotative movement of the head, and a spring bearing against the last mentioned arm and holding the same in engagement with the cam face of the head and acting also to yieldably hold the rod rocked to position with the supporting arm holding the panel spaced from the door.
3. The combination with a door, of a panel, and means supporting the panel in spaced relation to the door, said means including bracket arms pivoted upon the door and supporting the panel at one side, a rod mounted for turning movement at the other side of the door, and bracket arms secured to the said rod for turning movement therewith and pivoted to the panel and supporting the panel at its corresponding side, the panel being movable toward the door and upon such movement acting to turn the rod, a latch arm carried by the rod, and means yieldably holding the parts in position with the panel moved away from the door.
4. The combination with a door, of a member supported in spaced relation to the door and bodily movable toward the same, a latch arm mounted for rocking movement and arranged to be rocked upon movement of the member toward the door, an arm connected for movement with the latch arm, means cooperating with the second-mentioned arm and yieldably holding the latch arm in looking position and through the medium of the said second-mentioned arm yieldably holding the said member spaced from the door, and means independent of the said member and cooperating with the said second-mentioned arm and manually operable to move the latch arm out of looking position.
5. The combination with a door, of a member supported for movement relative thereto, a latch arm mounted for rocking movement and operatively connected with the said member, whereby to be moved out of locking position upon the movement of the member in one direction, means yieldably holding the latch arm in looking position and acting through the said arm to hold the member yieldably against move ment in said direction, and a rotatable cam member cooperating with the latch arm and manually operable to move the latch arm out of locking position.
