To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that l, JOHNIE B. HALEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Java, in the countv of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in /Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a wrench which is particularly adapted for use in manipulating nuts, pipes, rods or the like and, at the same time provide a wrench which can be quickly and readily operated to accommodate for various size objects upon which the wrench is to be used. Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a tool of the abov character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
.Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention parts thereof being broken away and illustrated in cross section; Fi g. 2 is a rear elevaion; Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the shank at one end of which is formed a handle 2 and at the other end is formed a stationary aw 3. Arranged in parallel relation with the shank 1 is the movable shank i and carried thereby is a sleeve 5 which is adapted to inclose the shank 1 whereby two shanks are securely held in their respective positions. The shank 4 is provided at its outer end with the jaw 6 which is movable with respect to the jaw 3 and is securely held in various positions by means of the teeth 7 formed on the movable shank 1 which are adapted for engagement with the teeth 8 on the shank 1. The movable shank d is mounted upon a pin 9 carried by the sleeve 5, for pivotal movement and in order to normally retain the teeth 7 and 8 into engagement, 1 provide a spring member 10, one end of which is rigidly se cured to the inner side of the movable shank 1 while the other end thereof yieldingly bears against one face of the shank 1 so as to yieldably retain the teeth of the shank a.

In the ordinary use of the wrench, the resiliency of the spring 10 is sufficient to retain the teeth 7 and 8 into engagement and hold the jaw 6 in its respective adjusted position but should the wrench be used on heavy work, I provide a locking member 11 which is in the form of a bell crank pivotally mounted upon the inner end of the shank 1 and the inner end thereof is adapted for engagement with the inner face of the shank 1 to securely retain the teeth 7 into engagement with the teeth 8 to hold the shank at against longitudinal movement with respect to the shank 1. The inner end of the shank 4 is provided with a curved handle portion 12 which is adapted to be engaged by any one of the fingers of the hand to release the teeth 7 and 8 whereby the shank 4: may be adjusted longitudinally with re spect to the shank 1.
It will be noted that in operating the looking member 11, the outer end thereof, when the device is in its normal position, extends outwardly beyond the outer face of the shank a and when it is desired to place the same in its operative position, pressure is exerted upon the outer end of the locking member so that the inner end thereof will engage the inner face of the shank 1 and force the inner end of the shank 4 outwardly, thus securely engaging the teeth 7 with the teeth 8 to hold the shank 4L against any longitudinal movement.
In connection with the above described wrench, I provide first a sleeve 13 which is preferably U-shaped and the ends thereof are rigidly secured to the outer side of the shank 1 adjacent the rigid jaw 3. Pivotally mounted between the two side portions of the sleeve 13 are the substantially circular head members 14 and 15, the upper and lower faces respectively of said head members being provided with teeth 14 and 15 which are adapted to mesh so that upon actuating the handle 16 which is formed integral with the head 14, the two head members will be rotated in opposite directions. Formed integral with the head 15 is a shank 17 having a curved jaw 18 formed integral therewith which is provided upon its inner face with a plurality of teeth 19 which are adapted to cor-act with the teeth formed in the concave aw porti0n21 upon the rear face of the jaw 3.
1 The outer portions of the jaws 18 and 21 are provided with cutting edges 22 which are formed similar to cutting pliers now in use so that the same may be readily used for pulling nails, cutting wire or for any other similar purpose; The shank 17 and the jaw faces 23 wherein wire may be readily cut when desired. The head 14 is provided upon its inner face with a concave jaw portion 2 1 having teeth25 which are adapted to coact with the teeth 26 in the aw 27 which is 7 formed upon the outer face of the shank 1 just below the inner end of thesleeve 13. The co-acting jaws 18 and 21. and 24 and 2'7 are adapted for manipulating pipe, rods and various other similar articles which can not be readily gripped by the jaws 3 and 6. In actuating the jaws 18 and 21 and 24; and 27 the handle member 16 is moved laterally with respect to the handle member 2 so that the jaws may be readily engaged or disengaged with the jaws to be manipulated.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing, it willbe readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable wrench wherein different types of objects of various sizes may be readily manipulated when desired.
