Application filed September 24, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY M. VINYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bend, in the county of Crook and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed Mechanism, of which.
the following is a specification.
The invention relates to feed mechanism, and more particularly to the class of motor operated feed mechanism.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of feed mechanism wherein the movable frame or carriagein a machine can be driven toward and away from the work and also released so that it may be freely moved to the required position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of mechanism of this character where in the movable frame or carriage may be reversed for bringing it into position with respect to the work or retracting it therefrom, the said frame or carriage being capable of manual adjustment as the occasion may require.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the split sleeve block and the spreading lever connected therewith. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail there is shown a skeleton frame formed with spaced parallel base sills 10, connected to cross rails 11 and from the said sills rise vertical posts or uprights 13 supporting spaced parallel top sills 14, connected to cross rails 15 to provide the rigid frame. Mounted in the frame contiguous to one of the front uprights or posts 12 is a vertical guide rod 16 to which is slidably connected a movable element or support 17 formed with bearing boxes 19 receiving the guide rod 16 and one of the rear uprights or posts 13, whereby the said support 17 can slide vertically thereon. The support 17 carries Specification of Letters Patent.

an endless chain saw 22 which is driven in a manner presently described. Suitably mounted within the frame near the rear end thereof is a hydrocarbon engine or motor 25 provided with the usual fly wheel 26, the outer face of which is engaged by means of a friction wheel 27 keyed or splined to a vertical supporting shaft 28 for longitudinal movement thereon, the said shaft being rotatably journaled in bearings 29 projecting outwardly from the follower frame 30 slidably engaged upon horizontally disposed guide rods 31, mounted in the rear uprights or posts 13, the shaft 28 being provided with a sprocket wheel 32, over which is trained an endless chain 33, the same being also trained over a sprocket wheel 34, give to the lower end of a feed screw 35, vertically dis posed and suitably journaled in the cross bars 11 and 15, connected to the bottom and 1 top sills respectively, the said feed screw 35 being operated from the motor engine for a purpose presently described. Formed in the bracket 18 are further bearings 36, the same being horizontally disposed, and in which is journaled a counter spindle or axle 37 to the outer end of which is fixed a driving sprocket wheel 38, engaging the chain saw 22, while fixed to the inner end of the said spindle 37 is a beveled gear 40, meshing with a beveled pinion 41 fixed to a vertically disposed driven shaft 42, journaled in the cross bars at the top and bottom of the frame. The said shaft 42 has fixed thereto a further beveled gear 43, meshing with a beveled pinion 44 fixed to a driving shaft 45 operated directly from the motor engine 25, so that the momentum thereof will be imparted to the chain saw 22 for operating the same.
The bracket 18 is formed with an extension 50 having a reduced end 51 to opposite sides of which are fixed outwardly converging spring arms 52 carrying the respective sections of a split feed nut 53 which is in threaded engagement with the feed screw 35, and on the working of the said nut 53 upon the latter the saw carriage or frame 17 will be vertically moved for bringing the chain saw 22 in working relation with re spect to a piece of work or away from the same. Mounted upon the nut 53 is a spread ing head 54 pivoted at 55 to the said. nut and formed with a spreading blade or lug 56, adapted for engagement between beveled edges 57 of the split in the said nut 53, on
, side edges of the nut movement of the head 54 in one direction, whereby the sections of the nut 53 may be separated thereby freeing the said nut from its engagement with the feed screw 35 to permit the manual adjustment of the carriage or frame 17 carrying the chain saw. The spreader head 54 is formed with a hand lever 58 whereby it may be manually manipulated. Furthermore, the said head 54 is formed with gripping extensions or fingers 59 which are adapted to embrace the 53 when the said head is moved in one direction, so as to obviate any possibility of the accidental spreading of the sections of the nut, and thereby disengaging it from the feed screw.
Vertically mounted in the slide 30 is an adjusting rod 60, the lower end of which is formed with a fork 61 at right angles thereto, loosely embracing the hub 62 of the friction wheel 27 and. on the adjustment of the said rod 60 by raising or lowering the same the friction wheel 27 can be moved across the face of the fly wheel 26 thereby varying the speed of rotation of the feed screw 35 or causing the reversal thereof whereby the carriage or frame 17 may be moved away from the work.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. and a spreading head pivotally connected to the split nut and having a spreading blade engageable between the parts of the said nut for separating the same, and also having a lever, the meeting walls of the parts of the split nut being formed with beveled portions to provide a gap for the introduction of the spreading blade between the parts of the nut.
2. The combination with a feed screw, of a movable element comprising outwardly convergent resilient arms, asplit feed nut having its respective parts integral with. the arms and engageable with the feed screw, a spreading head pivotally connected to the split nut and having a spreading blade engageable between the parts of the said nut for separating the same, and also having a lever, the meeting walls of the parts of the split nut being formed with beveled portions to provide a gap for the introduction of the spreading blade between the parts of the nut, said spreading head being formed with folding lugs engageable with the outer faces of the parts of the nut to =lock the same against spread i-n'g on the engagement thereof with the screw.
