FOLDINGIBOARD FOR PAPER-HANGERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed October 20, 1909. Serial No. 523,596.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. BRECKEN- RIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boards for Paper-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paste boards for use by paper-hangers and adapted to analogous uses.
My improvement especially relates to the arrangement of hinged paste boards whereby a long board may be transported readily from place to place and when opened out will be capable of satisfactory use in combination with pedestals supporting the boards at its ends as a table.
For many years it has been desirable to have paste boards that could be readily transported by street cars or other agencies and as these boards are necessarily long it has been desirable to hinge them in some way so that they could be closed during transportation and opened up at any time for use, a requirement being that the hinging thereof should not in any way weaken the structure for its particular use.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevat on of the two paste boards set up for use. Figs. 2 and 5 are detail views of the hinged construction. Fig. 3 is a detail view of part of the paste board. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the hinged paste boards in open position.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Fig. 1 the pedestals are indicated by a and a and it is apparent that in this character of device the pedestals are located at the free ends of the paste board so that the center of the board is unsupported. It is very important that the center of the board therefore be reinforced from collapsing and my improvement specifically relates to the device which not only reinforces the center of the board without interfering with its use as a paste board or table but permits the boards to be closed in compact form ready for transportation. There is preferably formed on each flap a a comprising the paste board near one end thereof a small groove extending transversely to the board as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5. There are preferably employed two pairs of hinges b and b for each flap. These hinges are turned up at their ends thereby forming a projecting flange 6 and this projecting flange extends within the groove formed in the bottom of the boards. It is also desirable to so space the hinges and so form the groove as to minimize the danger of weakening the paste board while at the same time the upturned flanges of the hinges in combination with the edges of the boards reinforce the same so as to form a very strong paste board especially at its center. It is apparent that if any great strain is exerted downwardly at the center of the board the strain will be borne by the hinges and because the flange b engages in the grooves the inner ends 0 and c of the flaps a will cooperate with said hinges to resist any such strains. The pintle for the hinges comprises a rod 0 which extends through the hinges in any usual and ordinary manner such that the flaps a and a can be readily closed as heretofore described.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim As an article of manufacture, a collapsible paste-board comprising a plurality of pairs of flaps capable of being supported entirely by the outer ends of the flaps a plurality of pairs of hinges secured to the inner ends of the flaps. projecting flanges extending transversely from each of the several parts of each pair of said hinges and transverse grooves formed in the under sides of each of the flaps and a pintle common to the pairs of hinges of a pair of flaps and near the inner edges of the flaps whereby the flanges will be held against movement by the grooves when the paste-board is supported at its outer ends, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of October 1909.
JOHN G. BRECKENRIDGE.
