Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD C. Pos'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a faucet and more particularly to a filter-press cock, and its object is to provide a construction in which the valve may be quickly opened or closed by a single longitudinal movement and may be accurately adjusted toward and from its seat.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line aza' of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail similar to that of Fig. 1 showing a modified construction; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line y-y of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawing, the shank 11 of a head 10 is formed with a common V- shaped screwthread 16 and the outer ends 17 of spring arms 18 are correspondingly formed with a similar screwthread to engage the shank. Mounted to turn freely upon a concentric boss 19 on a casing 4 surrounding the stem 8, is a cam member 20 having eccentric sides to engage the inner sides of the arms 18 and spring said arms outwardly when said member is turned by means of handles 21 thereon. Suitable stops 22 are provided on the member 20 to engage the arms and limit the turning movement of the member. In this construction when it is desired to quickly open or close the valve it is only necessary to turn the cam member 20 and this releases the arms 18 from engagement with the screwthreaded head on the valve stem, said head and stem may then be moved in or out without hindrance. When the arms are in engagement with the screwthreaded head, said head may be turned to accurately adjust the valve toward and from its seat.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 1, rigid arms 28 are substituted for the spring arms and these arms are pivotally attached at 24 to the casing 4. Their upper ends 25 are formed with a screwthread to engage the screwthread 16 of the head and to swing these arms into and out of engagement with the head, a cam member 26 is mounted to turn freely upon the boss 19 and is provided with cam slots 27 through which the arms 23 extend. When the cam member 26 is turned by means of its handles 28 the arms 23 traveling in the cam slots 27 are turned upon their pivots positively toward or from the head 10 and thus when it 1s desired to quickly open or close the valve said cam member may be turned to throw the arms out of engagement with the head and permit the same to be moved longitudinally. An opposite turning of the cam member throws the arms into engagement with the head so that when said head is turned, the valve will be adjusted toward or from its seat by the engagement of the screw thread on the head with the screwthreads on the arms.
This cock is especially adapted for use upon filters and other devices where a very quick opening or closing of the valve is desirable and also where it is necessary that the valve be so constructed that it may be accurately adjusted to give the desired open- ,ing. In the construction shown the valves may be quickly opened or closed by a single longitudinal movement of the stem, and the arms engaging the screwthreaded head give an accurate adjustment of the valve toward and from its seat and also hold the stem in the position to which it is adjusted.
Obviously, changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of my in vention and I do not wish to limit-myself to the particular form or construction shown.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a valve casing, a longitudinally movable valve stem in the casing, of a head on the outer end of the stem provided with a groove, an arm attached to the casing and having an end to engage the groove and a cam member on the casing to move the arm.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a valve casing, a longitudinally movable valve stem in the casing, of a head on theouter end of the stem provided with StxSCIGW thread, arms attached atone end to the casing at opposite sides thereof and formed at their outer ends to. engage the screw thread on the head, and a cam member rotatably mounted upon the casing between said arms to separate the same and disengage their outer ends from the screw thread.
