To all whom it may concern. v
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. SGHAAFF,
a citizen of the'United States, residing at a simple, cheap, durable and eliicient punch for perforating strips of paper or cards for any purpose whatsoever and to limit the manual labor necessary to be performed thereon to the positioning of a light part and the closing of an electric circuit. I use but twelve punches and twelve keys for operating them which are sufiicient to punch all holes without either shitting or using combinations. I also arrange the keys so that it is unnecessary to more the hand around over the key board as a slightmovement of each finger enables it to reach any key properly operated by that finger.
In the punches now in general use, the field on the card being punched and all the fields to be' punched are hidden from View. I provide an index card carrier caable of receiving a strip cut from a card of thekind being punched. The card carrier and card move along with the card be- ;ing punched, and a fixed pointer indicates the column which will be punched at the next key depression. This makes greatly for accuracy. As a further means for eliniinating error, I provide a simple rheostat and ordinarily allow only enlongh current to energize the magnet to pun'lh a single hole at one time. Hence if two keys, are depressed simultaneously the power is insulli cient to force the punches through the paper and a very fruitful source of error is eliminated.
As the operator does not have to pound the keys but simply apply a light pressure the nerves are much less disturbed than with the hand power punch. This also makes for accuracy. And the location of the keys where they are easily reached while the arm is held in a natural position is a further material help.
While I do not limit myself to the use of one magnet, one circuit and one pair of contact points, in the preferred form of my Specification of Letters Yatent,
