Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed May 5, 1914. Serial No. 836,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. ROAOHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Rolling Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improvechciga-rette rolling machine arranged within a tobacco container to allow the production of a cigarette without danger of spilling the tobacco, to permit of placing the proper quantity of tobacco into a. forming or filling tube, to uniformly distribute and pack the tobacco in the said tube, to wrap the wrapper around the tobacco in the filling tube and to allow of finally ejecting the finished cigarette from the tube without requiring opening of the container.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a tobacco container provided with a filling tube having one end openinginto the container to allow the tobacco to pass from the container into the filling tube, the latter having a tangential entrance extending lengthwise in the side of the tube for the insertion of a wrapper, and a manuall} controlled tool mounted to turn and adapted to be passed into the said filling tube todistribute and tamp the tobacco in the tube end to turn the tobacco within the tube with a view to draw in the wrapper and to wind the wrapper around the tobacco in the filling tube.
A practical embodiment of'the invention is represented in the accompanying draw- 7 ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

4 and 5 are enlarged cross sections of the same and showing the different stages in wrapping the wrapper and the tobacco in the filling tube: Fig. 6 is a sectional. plan view of the discharge end of the filling tube and its closure; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bushing in Which the tool is mounted to turn with and to slide in.
The container A for holding the tobacco is preferably in the form of a sheet metal box having a hinged cover B and within the said container A and near one end thereof is arranged a transverse partition C dividing the container into a main compartment A and a measuring compartment A the partition having a cut-out portion C to allow the tobacco to pass from the main compartment A into the measuring compartment A A filling tube D is arranged within the compartment A at the front end thereof and the said filling tube opens at one end into the compartment A and extends with its other end to the outside of the container, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The filling tube D is provided at the front with a tangential entrance D for the insertion of a wrapper E adapted to be passed through a cut-out portion A in the front of the container A to reach the entrance D. This entrance D is formed by splitting the tube D in a longitudinal direction and having the ends of the tube overlapping and spaced apart, as plainly indicated in Figs. 3, l and so that the said edge of a wrapper passed through the entrance D in an upward direction engages the inner surface of the tube D to follow the same, as hereinafter more fully explained, with a view to pass the wrapper around the tobacco contained in the tube D at the time.
The tobacco in the compartment A is adapted to pass through the inner open end of the tube D into the latter to fill the same, and the outer end of the said tube D is normally closed'by a cover F provided with a longitudinally extending pivot F mounted to turn in a tube F held within the compartment A adjacent the filling tube D, as plainly indicated in Fig; 6. A spring F is coiled on the pivot F and bears with one end against the outer end of the tube F and presses with its other end on a collar F held on the pivot P" so that the cover F is normally held seated on the outer end. of the filling tube I). When it is desired to eject the finished cigarette, as hereinafter more fully explained, then the cover F is swung upward into an open position to allow of ejecting the cigarette from the filling tube D, and when this has been done the cover F is swung back into closed position on the outer end of the filling tube D.
In order to draw the wrapper E into the filling tube D and around the tobacco containedtherein, use is made of a. tool G, preferably in the form of a fiat bar adapted to extend centrally into the tube D from the inner end thereof, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The tool (l is mounted to slide in a bushing H having its axis coinciding with the axis ot the nlhng tube D and being mounted to turn in a hearing I attached to or forming part of the end of the container A at th the tool. G is provided with a handle G adapted to be taken holdiof by the user of the machine to permit the user to slide the tool Gr lengthwise of the filling tube D to distribute and tamp or packvthe tobacco therein and to turn the tobacco for drawing in the wrapper E. The bushing H is provided with an annular groove H into which projects a dent If formed on the bearing I so as to hold the; bushing H against lengthwise movement in the hearing I but to allow the said bushing to. turn in thebearing. The tool G is provided near its inner end with a lugor pin G adapted 1o abut against the inner end of the bushing H to limit the outward movement of the said tool G. A spring tongue (l is formed on the tool G near the handle G to engage the bushing H with a view to hold the tool against accidental outward movement when the rolling machine is not used and is held in the pocket of the user.
In using the machine for forming a cigarette the user first tilts the container A with a View to bring the compartment A hottomward to allow the tobaccov to readily pass from the main compartment A into the measuring compartment A the operation being facilitated by the operator slightly shaking the container. Theoperator. now tilts the container in the opposite direction to allow the tobacco contained in the measuring compartment A to pass through the open inner end of the filling tube D into the latter, and during the time the tube D is'filling, the operator turns the handle G of the tool (l to cause the latter to distribute the tobacco evenly within the filling tube D. The operator next inserts the forward edge of the wrapper E into the entrance D" of the filling tube D and then the operator turns the knob G so that the tobacco contained'i-n the filling tube is rotated and in doing so it exerts a pressure against the entered end of the wrapper E to draw the wrapper E inward around the tobacco, the wrapper following the inner surface of the filling tube D, and when the wrapper is nearly drawn into the filling tube D its outer portion is moistened and then the drawing in process is continued to cause the overlapping edges of the wrapper E to adhere to each other. The operator then gradually draws the tool G outward and in doing so tamps thetobacco contained in the wrapper, and finally the operator opens the cover F and then pushes the tool G inward e compartment A The outer end of the latter having a tangential entrance in so that the finished cigarette is ejected through the open outer end of the filling tube D. When this has been done the cover F is returned to closed position.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the filling tube D and the tool G form part of the container A and the user can very quickly and accurately roll a cigarette in which the tobacco is evenly distributed and properly packed to insure a good smoke. i I
Having thus described my invention,'I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:
1. A cigarette rollingmachine, comprising a tobaccocontainer, a filling tube in the said container and having one end opening into the said container for the tobacco to pass from the container into the filling tube,
the outer side for the insertion of a wrapper, and a manually controlled tool mountcd to be turned and adapted to be passed into the said filling tube to distribute and tamp the tobacco in the tube and to rotate the tobacco to cause it by its engagement with the wrapper to draw the wrapper into the tube through the slot thereof and ,wind it around the tobacco in the filling tube. 2. A cigarette rolling machine, comprising a tobacco container. a filling tube in the said container and having one end opening into the said container for the tobacco to pass from the container into the filling tube,
the latter having a tangential entrance in 1'00 the outer side fol-the insertion of a wrap per, a closure for the outer end of the said filling tube,.and a manually controlled tool mounted to be turned and adapted to be passed into thesaid filling tube to distribute and tamp the tobacco in the tube and to rotate the tobacco to cause it by its engagement with the wrapper to draw the wrapper into the tube through the slot'thereof and wind it around the tobacco in the filling tube and to eject the cigarette through the outer end after the closure has been opened.
3. A cigarette rolling machine, comprising a tobacco container rovidcd near one end with a partition to torm a main compartment and a measuring compartment, the compartments, beings in communication with each other, a filling tube held in the said container and provided with a lengthwise extending slot leadinglto the outside of the container to permit t e insertion of a wrapper, the said filling tube having its inner end opening into the said measuringcompartment and the other end of the filling tube extending to the outside of the container, and a rod mounted to turn and to slide in the said container and adapted to pass through the said measuring compartment at the inner end of the filling tube into 1 the latter. 5. A cigarette rolling machine comprising a tobacco container provided near one end with a partition to form a main compartment and a measuring compartment, the compartments being in communication with each other, a filling tube held in the said container and provided with a lengthwise extending slot leading to the outside of the container to permit the insertion of a wrapper, the said filling tube having its inner end opening into the said measuring compartment and the other end of the filling tube extending to the outside of the container, a
bushing in axial alinement with the said filling tube and mounted'to turn in the end of the container adjacent the said measuring compartment, and a flat bar mounted to slide in the said bushing to pass through the said measuring compartment into the said tube, the outer end of the said-bar having a handle.
6. A cigarette rolling machine, comprising a tobacco container provided near oneend with a partition to form a main compartment and a measuring compartment, the
compartment being in communication with each other, a filling tube held in the said container and provided with a lengthwise extending slot leading to the outside of the container to permit the insertion of a Wrapper, the said filling tube having its inner end opening into the said measuring compartment and the other end of the filling tube extending to the outside of the container, a spring-pressed cover mounted to swing on the outside of the container and adapted to close the outer end of the said filling tube, and a rod mounted to turn and to slide in the said container and adapted to pass through the said measuring compartment at the inner end of the filling tube into the latter.
7. A cigarette rolling machine, comprising a filling tube open at one end for the tobacco to pass into the tube and provided with a lengthwise-extending tangential entrance for the insertion of a wrapper, and a manually controlled tool mounted to turn and to slide in the direction of its length in the said filling tube, the tool being so constructed that when rotated the tobacco will be turned thereby to cause the tobacco by its engagement with the. wrapper to draw it into the filling tube and around the tobacco in the said tube.
8. A cigarette rolling machine, comprising a filling tube provided at its side with a tangential entrance for the wrapper to direct the latter tangentially against the inner surface of the tube, and a fiat bar extending into the filling tube vand adapted to be turned to turn the tobacco in the filling tube and thereby cause the tobacco to draw in the wrapper and around the tobacco.
