BRUSH FOR LINQTYPE-POTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed. March 28, 1914-. Serial No. 827,893.
. To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Lno EWALD, citizen of the United States, resident of'Minnea-polis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Linotype-Pots, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for cleaning the inner walls of the casting pots of linotype machines.
A further object is to provide a brush of durable construction and one which can be easily and quickly adjusted to take up or compensate for the wear of the bristles.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, allas hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view of a linotype machine pot, showing my invention in use therein, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the brush, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, showing the manner of mounting the brush spindles or supports in the head of the brush.
In the drawing, 2 represents a linotype pot of ordinary construction. Above this pot is an arm 3 to which the plunger for the pot is attached in the well known manner, both of these parts being of ordinary con struction and usually found in linotype machines in general use.
It is necessary from time to time to remove the plunger and operate the brush in the pot to clean the walls thereof. With this end in view I provide a head 4, consisting preferably of a metal disk having a centrally arranged stud 5 provided with a slot 6 in which a block '7 is'pivoted on a pin 8. A crank 9 has a forked end to straddle the block Tand has a pivot pin 10 thereon, the upper end of said crank being provided with a handle 11. The head i is provided with a series of radial slots 12. There are preferably three of these slots, adapted to receive threaded studs 13 formed on the upper ends of spindles 14, said studs having lock nuts 15 for securing them in their adjusted position in said slots. The spindles 14 are provided with wire bristles 16, arranged in groups or clusters, one above another, from one end to the other of the spindles. These bristles are adapted to rub on the inner surface of the pot 2 and thoroughly clean it, the crank 9 being inserted into the slot in the arm 3 when the plunger is removed and revolved to rotate the brush, the pivotal connection of the crank with the brush head allowing it to be tilted out of alinement with the axis of the brush. Whenever the bristles are worn, the lock nuts may be loosened and the spindles re-adjusted by moving them inwardly or outwardly in their slots, thus changing the position of the bristles to compensate for the wear or for pots of different diameter.
In various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A linotype pot brush comprising a head, a crank centrally pivoted thereon and a plurality of brushes rigidly mounted in said head on the opposite side thereof from the pivotal connection of said crank therewith and having bristles extending radially with respect to said head.
2. A linotype pot brush comprising a head in the form of a substantially fiat disk hav ing a centrally arranged stud on one side, an operating crank pivotally connected with said stud, a plurality of spindles having end portions fitting within radial slots provided in said head and adjustable therein toward and from the center of said head, and bristles mounted in said spindles and projecting outwardly therefrom.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of March, 1914:.
LEO E VVALD.
