NAPOLEON CARON',.OF NASHUA, N'EW' HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 NAPOLEON RODIER, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21, 1913. Serial No. 749,933.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NAPOLEON GABON, citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to hammers and has particular reference for a nail holding attachment employed in connection therewith.
This invention aims to provide a device readily applicable to a standard hammer which will hold a nail in driving position at the head of the hammer thus greatly facilitating the driving of nails in inaccessible corners and recesses.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application. I
With reference to the drawings, wherein, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which, similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure l is a side view of the hammer embodied in my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. .4: is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Proceeding now to the description of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a hammer head of any suitable type mounted on the handle 2. The hammer head lmay be of the customary structure carrying a laterally projecting poll 3 the free end of which terminates in an enlarged portion 4:- The member' 4: is formed with a nail receiving channel 5 disposed in lateral relation to the handle 2 and is adapted to receive the pointed terminal of a nail. As a means for driving the nail into the wood or other material, I employ an auxiliary head 6, which may be formed integrally with the hammer head 1 or may be cast separately and secured thereto by a mortise and tenon joint or any other suitable securing means. This head 6 is essentially an elongated metallic bar, the longitudinal axis of which is disposed in parallel relation to the longitudinal axis, of the handle 2. As indicated in Fig. 4, the member 6 is provided with a laterally extending groove, the vertical walls of which are provided with spring retaining shoulders 7 and 8 between the under faces of which and the bottom wall of the grooves, the fixed end of the nail retaining leaf spring 9 is slidably mounted. Adjacent this spring receiving groove and on the side of the member 6 adjacent the member 4: is formed a laterally projecting lug or shoulder 10 provided to prevent the contact of a nail with the spring member 9. The upper end of said spring member 9, is provided with a lug bent at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the spring and toward the body portion, said body portion being provided with a recess for the retention of said lug to hold said spring in position. The free end of the spring 9 is bent as at 11 to pro duce a laterally projecting retaining finger which, when a nail is inserted in the hammer, is adapted to retain the nail in position by reason of the resiliency of the spring.
The actual structure of the device being thus disclosed, it now remains to describe the method of employing the invention. Briefly it is as follows: A nail is passed between the member 9 and the poll of the hammer in angular relation to the poll and from the handle side thereof. The nail is then turned to bring the head in abutment with the adjacent face of the member 6 and the lug l0 and to dispose the pointed end of the nail in the channel 5. It will thus be seen that the nail is securely held in alinement with the striking force of the handle and may be readily driven into a board or other material securely enough to permit the hamresorted to, when required, without vsacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A hammer including a main head having a recess therein, an auxiliary head associated with the main head and provided with a T slot, and a resilient nail holding means slidably engaged through said T slot, one end of said means being turnedat right angles and held in said recess by the inherent resiliency of said means, the opposite 'ter- 7 Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressingthe Commissioner 01' ZPatents,
minal of said means being normally in en gagement with saidimain head and adapted to be flexed upon the insertion of a nail .1
.thereheneath. to hold the latter from dis- NAPOLEON omen.
