citizen of the United States, residing at Orono, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain Improvements in Hydraulic Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on 1d the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to hydraulic apparatus, and more specifically to combined water motors and pumps.
The invention has for its chief object to devise an apparatus of this character in which the energy of a current of water can be utilized to ,raise automatically a part of the water to a point above the orlginal head.
It is a further object of the invention to devise an apparatus of the character 1nd1- cated which can be economically manufactured, in which Wear and deterioration shall be reduced to a minimum, and which will require but little attention while in use. The invention will be readily understood from the following description of one embodiment thereof, reference being made to the figure of the accompanying drawing which shows a central, longitudinal section of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention.
The apparatus shown comprises a 'caslng 2 which may be made of any convenient number of sections and is designed, when in use, to be set in a vertical position. This easing has a lateral intake opening 4 intermediate of its ends and two discharge pass 40 sages extending in substantially opposite directions; one, indicated at 6, extending downwardly and the other, indicated at 8, extending upwardly, from theintake opening. A diaphragm 10, projecting from the back of the easing into the intake, serves to direct the greater part of the water entering the intake opening into the lower discharge passage 6 and a smaller part into the upper passage '8.

Fast on the shaft 18 and positioned with in the lower discharge passage 6 is a water wheel 22 which may be of any suitable construction but, .in the form shown, consists of aplurality of blades extending spirally along the shaft 18 and wide enough to fit as snugly within the walls of the discharge passage. 6 as possible while providing the necessary clearance. It will now be understood that, when'the casing is set in operative position, its intake end being connected to a penstock leading from .a suitable head of water, the in'flowing current of water will be divided by thediapump 24 in lifting the water.
It will'be understood, of course, that the dimensions of the casing and pump will be varied in accordance with the particular conditions under which the apparatus is to. be operated.
