DOWNDRAFT SIDE-FEED SMOKELESS FURNACE.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIcHAnL E. HERBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Downdraft Side -Feed Smokeless Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in down draft side feed smokeless furnaces, and has for its object, the provision of means in a side feed furnace for holding the coal at the sides until it is coked by means of water legs, and for then feeding the coked fuel to the center of a water tube grate and between the water legs, and having a lower grate provided for catching and holding the smaller particles, and wherein means is provided for moving the fuel, and also means for constraining the draft' to pass down through the burning fuel to consume all of the carbon usually wasted as smoke.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front View of the improved furnace; Figs. 2 and 4 are sections on the lines 22 and 1%, respectively of Fig. 3; isa longitudinal vertical section; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the water legs, water tube grate and grate.
The present embodiment of the invention comprlses a casing consisting of side walls 1, a rear end wall 2, and a cover 3, having an arch 4 at its center, and a bridge wall 5 is arranged transversely of the casing, at approximately the center thereof. The boiler 6 is supported beneath the arch 4, on the bridge wall 5. and the said boiler is of less length than thecasing. The ends of the boiler are flush with the ends of the arch, Fig. 3, and the rear wall 2 is spaced apart from the rear end of the boiler. An arch 7 is arranged at the rear of the boiler, between the boiler and the rear wall 2. The front end of the arch contacts with the boiler, and the rear end is seated on a rib 8 in the rear wall. The boiler is provided with a hand hole above the arch 7 and a closure 9 is provided for closing the said hole. The boiler has the usual flue pipesor tubes 10, and a hand hole is also provided at the front end of the boiler, and closed by a closure 11. A wall 12 is arranged longitudinally of the boiler and furnace at the front thereof, and at the center, and a longitudinally grooved plate 13 is seated on the. top of the wall.

a plurality of units, each unit comprising a series of bars, four in the present instance. When any of the units become burned out or injured in any way it may be removed and replaced by a new unit. The grate sections 14 and 1 1 are arranged on each side of the plate, Fig. 5, and each of the said sections is seated at its inner edge on a shoulder or ledge 15, running longitudinally of the plate at the sides thereof. It will be noted that each of the grate sections is inclined downwardly and inwardly, toward the center plate, and each section is composed of a narrow inner portion and a wide outer portion arranged at a greater angle to the plate than the inner section. The units of each grate section, are supported by the ledge 15 and a ledge 18 on the adjacent side wall of the furnace. At their lower ends, the said units bear against the adjacent side edge of the plate 13, so that the said units are held from downward movement.
A water tube grate is arranged above the fire grate, the said water grate comprising a central drum or tube 19, seated in the groove of the plate 13, and having oppositely extending series of tubes 20 and 20 The tubes comprising each series are parallel with each other, and are approximately parallel with the bars of the adjacent grate section. The outer ends of the tubes of each series 20 and 20 are connected by a pipe 2l21 respectively, and the said pipes 21 and 21 are embedded in the side walls of the furnace. A pipe 25 extends upwardly from the front end of each pipe 2l21 to a point near the top of the furnace, and a T is interposed in each pipe 25, intermediate its ends. The upper end of each pipe 25 is connected to the boiler 6 by a pipe 26. A branch pipe 27 leads from the lateral branch of each T to a connection with the front end of a water leg, a pair of which is arranged above the water grate, the said legs 28-28 being on opposite sides of the center of the furnace. The water legs are connected at spaced intervals by cross pipes 29, and the pipes 27 are connected with openings 30 at the tops of the legs. Other pipes 31 extend from openings 32 at the lower portion of the front ends of the water legs, through the front 33 of the furnace, each pipe being closed at its front end, as shown at 3a. A series of tiles 35 is supported on the pipes 29, and the upper faces of the said tiles contact with the bottom of the boiler. The tiles are held from lateral movement by the inner faces of the water legs.
The main water supply. pipe 38 extends iongitudinally of the furnace, entering the furnace through an opening in one of the side walls, and then extends forwardly through an opening in the rear end of the drum 19. Across 38 is interposed in the pipe adjacent to the drum.
Each water leg is connected at its rear end to the cross 38 of the main water supply pipe, by a connecting pipe 38, and the said pipe38 is also connected with the boiler 6, by means of a pipe 37. The pipe 38 extends to a point near the rear wall of the tom of the furnace to the boiler, and separate the furnace into three compartments. The front compartment contains the fire grate, the water grate, and the water legs, and'the central compartment contains the cross 27, and the connections 36, fromthe cross to the water legs. The opening 41 is arranged in the side wall having opening 39 and opens into the central compartment between walls 5 and 45, and the door 42 closes the said opening. The rear compartment is divided into upper and lower compartments by a horizontal wall 43, which-extends from side wall to side wall, and from wall 45 to the rear Wall 2 of the furnace. The door opening 39 is arranged below the wall 43, and a door opening 44 is arranged in the opposite side wall from opening 39, above the wall 43, and at the rear end of the furnace.
A baiile or deflectingwall consisting of 7 two portions 46 and 46 arranged at an angle to each other is'arranged above wall 43 just behind wall 45. The apex of the said wall is at the center of the furnace, and the ends are spaced apart from the side wallsl, to form a passage 47 at each side of the furnace, each passage leading from the central compartment to the upper rear compartment of the furnace.
The. front 33 of the furnace is provided with a pair of doors 48 at the front end of the boiler to permit access to the fiues, and a door 49 is arranged at the outer side of each door 48 and'below the same. A door 50 is arranged just above the outer end of the drum, and a door 51 is arranged at each side of the drum, each door 51 opening into removal of ashes.

The boiler 6 is shown as the ordinary form of boiler, but it will be evident that any other construction might be used. The

and passes through drum 19, pipes 20 and 20- to pipes 21 and 21 In operation, the fuel is fed at the sides of the water legs, through the doors 49, onto the tubes 20-20 of the outer grate. The water legs 28 and 28 hold the coal on the water grate at the sides of the said legs, until it is coked, after which the coked fuel is broken up and fed to the center of the water grate, between the water legs, by means of the swinging arms54, arranged between the bars of the fire grate. The said arms are operated in any suitable manner, and swing up through the coked fuel, breaking it up, and moving it down to the center of the grate. Any portion of the fuel falling through the water grate is caught by the fire grate, and is also fed to the center by the arms. The hottest portion of the fire is thus around the drum 19, and the tubes 20 and 209, and below and between the water legs, so that the water is thoroughly'heated not only in the boiler, but in the grate; The draft enters through the dampers of doors 49, passes downwardly through the tubes 2O-2O and then upwardly between the water legs, rearwardly between the said legs through the opening in wall 45, and is defiected to each side of the boiler by the wall 46- 16. The tiles 35 prevent burning of the boiler, While at the same time they take up and hold the heat, distributing it uniformly to the boiler.
Two pipes 55 and 56 lead upwardly from the boiler, near its front end, for delivering the steam, and a water gage 57 and a steam gage 58 are arranged at the front'of the boiler, and are connected thereto by pipes 59 and 60. The doors 51 permit access to the space between the grates, for cleaning or the like, and the doors 52 are for the Door 50 gives access to *ltlje space above the drum for cleaning or the It will be noted that the feeding arms 54 are arranged between the grate bars. As many arms maybe provided as may be desired, in order to properly feed the fuel to the center of the grates. Normally the said arms rest between the grate bars, with their upper edges flush with the upper edges of the grate bars, and each of the said feeding arms 54 is provided with longitudinally spaced downwardly extending lugs 61. A
shaft 62 rectangular in cross section is ar- 7 ranged below each of the grate sections, and
the lugs 61 of each feeding arm fit over the adjacent shaft. The shafts 62 extend through the front wall of the furnace as shown at 63 in Fig. 1 and are adapted to be engaged by any suitable means, as for instance, a crank to oscillate the said shafts to operate the feeding arms. The said feeding arms 54% when moved into the position shown in Fig. 5 extend upwardly between the pipes 20-20* and feed the fuel to the centers of the grates.
I claim 1. In a device of the character specified, a boiler, water legs below the boiler and at the front thereof and spaced apart laterally from each other, pipes connecting the water legs at spaced intervals and arranged at the tops of the legs, a drum arranged between and below the legs, a connection between each of the water legs and the drum at the rear end thereof, pipes arranged approximately parallel with the drum at each side and above the same, and a series of pipes connecting each of the lateral pipes with the drum, the lateral pipes communicating with the boiler near the top thereof, and a pipe leading from each water leg to the adjacent pipe of the last-named pipes and communicating therewith intermediate the ends of the said pipe.
2. In a device of the character specified, a boiler, water legs arranged below the boiler and spaced apart laterally from each other, a series of communications between the water legs at the tops thereof, a drum arranged below and between the water legs, a lateral pipe at each side of the drum and above the level of the drum, a series of pipes connecting each lateral pipe with the drum, a communication between each lateral pipe and the boiler, and a communication between each water leg and the said last-named communication.
3. A water grate comprising a central drum, a series of water tubes extending radially from the drum at each side thereof, the series inclining upwardly and outwardly copies from the drum, a pipe at the outer end of each series of tubes with which the tubes communicate, and means for feeding the fuel toward the center of the grate.
4. In a device of the character specified, a water grate composed of a central drum and series of parallel pipes leading upwardly and outwardly from the drum at each side thereof, the pipes of each series being in the same plane, a pipe arranged approximately parallel with the drum at the outer end of g each series and with which all of the pipes of the series communicate, said grate being adapted to support burning fuel, means below the grate for receiving the fuel passing between the pipes, and means in connection with the said means for stirring the fuel on the water grate.
5. In a device of the character specified, a water grate composed of a central drum and series of parallel pipes leading upwardly and outwardly from the drum at each side thereof, the pipes of each series being in the same plane, a pipe arranged approximately parallel with the drum at the outer end of each series and with which all of the pipes of the series communicate, said grate being adapted to support burning fuel, and means below the water grate for stirring the fuel on the grate.
6. In a device of the character specified, a water grate composed of a central drum and series of parallel pipes leading upwardly and outwardly from the drum at each side thereof, the pipes of each series being in the same plane, a pipe arranged approximately parallel with the drum at the outer end of each series and with which all of the pipes of the series communicate, said grate being adapted to support burning fuel.
