SWING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed February 2, 1914. Serial No. 816,132.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEO J. WENDLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lawn or porch swings, and its object is to provide novel and improved means whereby the swing may be kept in motion by the feet of the occupant thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved fan attachment, the fanbeing automatically operated when the swing is in motion;
These objects are attained combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which a perspective view of the swing, together with operating means and the fan attachment, are shown.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the body of an ordinary swing having suspension bars 6 at its ends which are journaled for oscillatory movement on a stationary supporting shaft 7 carried by cross bars 8 which are made fast to any suitable support.
On the suspension bar 6, at the foot end of the swing, are eye members 9 through which passes a rod 10 terminating at its lower end near the swing body 5, and having thereat a loop 11 extending transversely of said swing body. The upper end of the rod has an inward lateral bend 12 parallel to the shaft 7, and terminating in an eye 13 to which is loosely connected a link 14, the latter being loosely connected to a clamp member 15 made fast to the shaft.
As the shaft 7 is stationary, it will be evi dent that the occupant of the swing may put the same in motion by pressing sidewise with the feet against the lower looped end of the rod 10.
The suspension bar shelves 16 and 17, respectively. shelf 16 has a bearing The top for the shaft 18 of a in the county of Cook and by means of a 6 at the head end of V the swing carries two vertically spaced ratchet wheel 19, said shaft passing through the shelf to the bottom shelf 17 where it carries a gear wheel 20. The shelf 17 supports the shaft 21 of a fan 22, and on said shaft is a gear 23 which is connected to the gear 20 by atrain of gears 24. Thus, the motion of the ratchet wheel 19 is transmitted to the shaft 21 to actuate the .fan 22.
The ratchet wheel 19 is operated by a pair of pawls 25 site sides of the fulcrum 27 thereof, said lever being mounted on the shelf 16. On
the shaft 27 is rigidly mounted a depending fork 28 between which the free end of the lever 26 loosely extends. When the swing is in motion, the lever 26 swings bodily therewith, and as the fork 25 is stationary, the lever is also vibrated, whereby the pawls 25 impart a continuous rotary motion to the ratchet Wheel 19, which'is transmitted to carried by a lever 26 on oppo-' the fan shaft 21 by the gear train 2&1 at an increased rate of speed.
A means is provided for disconnecting the fan drive-gear, said means comprising a finger 29 extending beneath the gear on the fan shaft 21, and having a depending operating rod 30, by means of which, said gear may be lifted out of engagement with the next gear in the train.
Instead of the cross bars 8, the bar 7 may be directly supported by two end posts, such as porch columns, etc.
I claim:
The combination of a swing having suspension bars, a stationary shaft supporting the suspension bars, a shelf carried by one of the suspension bars, a ratchet wheel and a lever carried by said shelf, said lever having pawls which engage the ratchet wheel, a fan geared to the ratchet wheel, and a fork rigidly mounted on the shaft, between the branches of which fork the lever loosely extends. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
' 1S 7 LEO J. X WENDLING.
I mark Witnesses: CHAS. ANDERSON, S. J. LEHRER.
