UNITED sTATEs PATENT our on,
JOHIN M. WHITTEMORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOVEN FABRIC.
Application filed April 21, 1913. Serial No. 762,596.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M; WrrITTE- MORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Woven Fabrics, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is more particularly an improvement in rag carpeting and rugs, but the invention may be embodied in fabrics intended to be applied to a variety of uses.
The invention consists in a woven fabric composed wholly or in part of yarns or strands consisting of a strip of woven ma terial surrounding a core composed of a pa per cord, or of other suitable core material in some instances. Usually I employ the cored rag-yarn or strand as Weft or filling, and interweave it with warps of other and usually finer material.
The drawing illustrates a portion of a woven fabric which is an embodiment of the invention.
The rag weft or filling is represented at a, and b, b are fine warp threads. The rag weft or filling is interwoven with the warp threads in the usual manner of producing rag carpeting.
The appearance of a fabric such as that represented in the drawing is similar to that of rag carpeting, but is superior, owing to the greater uniformity and fullness of the rag weft or filling, and the fabric is much more substantial and solid and has a better cushioning effect than ordinary rag carpeting containing a corresponding amount of cloth in its construction.
The invention enables an excellent rag carpeting or rug to be produced at low cost. At the present time it is diflicult to procure Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
a suflicient quantity of rags or cuttings of cloth for use as weft or filling in the manufacture of rag carpeting or rugs on a commercial scale, and the cost of the necessary rags, or of the weft or filling when composed of ordinary webs of cloth cut up into strips, in the manufacture of ordinary rag carpeting is relatively high. In ordinary rag weft or filling a considerable proportion of the rags or cloth of which the same is composed is hidden within the interior of the weft or filling, and serves only to give body or substance. The invention, by constituting the body or interior portion of the weft or filling of less expensive material, reduces the cost of the woven fabric, and enables it to be sold to the purchaser at a relatively low price. The invention is not restricted to the use of paper as the material of the core or filling. Other materials may otherwise prepared.
I claim as my invention: 7
1. A woven fabric consisting wholly or in part of strands or yarns composed of an exterior of woven material in strip form, and a core or filling constituting a relatively large body orinterior for the said strands or yarns.
2. The herein described woven rag carpeting consisting of a rag weft or filling composed of an outer strip or covering of woven material in strip form, and a core or constituting a relatively large terior for the said rag weft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. IVHITTEMORE.
